Hm. The new Avengers movie Heroclix are out, and they have a Skrull figure. Doesn't look like the dudes in the preview tho. Red herring?

Never heard of them. Not familiar with them at all. Honestly, I think it's kinda moot. For all intents and purposes they are your generic alien menace...

I believe these are the aliens from the Ultimate Universe that aided the Nazis near the end of WW2 when Captain America disappeared. They reappeared in The Ultimates mini series. If you have a chance pick up the Ultimates mini-series and you can read up on them.

Whedon said the aliens were not Skrulls or Kree. From what I read up on Chitauri, their origin is speculative and appearantly hate being identified as a Skrull which they consider lesser beings...

It's been confirmed by those who were at the premier on Wednesday. Race identity was revealed within the first minute of the film.
