Swapping X-Box 360s
Hey all, have any of you ever replaced a 360 with a new 360? My day 1, 1st gen, no HDMI, no red ring of death ever 360 is acting a little squirrely. It seems to lock-up (again no ring of death, just stops responding) I wondered if it's possible to just swap hard drives with a new unit and not lose my saves, and movies, and wireless settings? Ease of migration will probably be the deciding factor on if the 360 gets replaced.

Yes, all you have to do is swap hard drives and you're golden.

I had this problem myself on two occasions, although I am fairly certain you are not going to immediately send your old XBox in for repairs, keep the drive and swap it. In fact, there is a kit that comes with the (MEASLY) 120GB HD that allows you to transfer all your info with no problem. The old drive is wiped clean, but all the info on the old drive gets transferred to the new drive. I think this "kit" would work with any drive, not just the 120GB it comes with; the "kit" is basically a disk (to put into the XBox) and a cable to connect the two drives.
Although I must confess, before this kit came out, I did the swap "underhanded" so to speak.

Sent my old Xbox (Day 1 classic) to a friend, bought an "Arcade" with no hard drive and a 334mb Mu internal on sale. Plugged the drive in, plugged in the other, old video and network connections, picked English, picked my profile boom. Like nothing ever happened 'cept for the extra controller.
Enjoyed Fable II, though the cute factor is high.
Thanks for all the advice.

That reminds me, once I get my computer-situation fully straightened, I gotta work on my inoperative X-Box to get it up and running. I did pick up an "Elite", but still have my (2nd) X-Box here. I gotta gets me some pennies and open her up, then perhaps cheat me some Achievements.

You can't use the old HDs on the old model. You'll have to buy a transfer cable to copy over your saves. If you buy a current model, you can just switch the HD over.
However, you will need to log in to the xbox.com page and register the new 360 to be able to play all the DLC content that you might have bought. Just go here:

Well, I recently had to get a new XBox, so I got one with a bigger hard drive. Just recently a Live update went out that allows you to use USB flash drives to save on. It was a little annoying as my flash drive isn't that big, but it was fairly easy and I didn't have to spend any extra money to transfer my saves.
