Cryptic's Champions Online!

Gearbox Software knows a thing or two about soldiering—its Brothers in Arms games have even been used to recreate key World War II battles on the History Channel. With those kind of qualifications, it seems like they’d be the perfect developer to tackle a game about Marines. Make that United States Colonial Marines. You got it—Aliens: Colonial Marines is invading consoles and PCs in 2009. We have a world-exclusive first look at the squad-based FPS, which aims to recapture the tension and desperation of the earlier films. Check out the first-ever screens of the game in action. If that’s not enough, we have the first look at Cryptic Studios’ latest superhero MMO, Champions Online. The City of Heroes developers are taking on PCs and consoles, too, letting us all unleash our inner heroes—or villains. We also take Red Faction: Guerrilla apart, getting an in-depth look at the game’s amazing destructible environments. Read about these games and much, much more in the new issue of Game Informer—the first place you’ll see God of War: Chains of Olympus reviewed.

But .. but .. Jack said that Champion style powers choices led to either gimping or tank-mage'ing, and that the Archetype system was better.

Hero Games is having a big announcement on the 18th to talk about something 'big' relating to Champions. I'd watch that space and also Cryptic's website for those announcements.
I didn't see this one coming; I was sure that Cryptic was going to announce a completely new IP related to those 'dark world' development art that's been on the site forever.

5 Bucks says that after Marvel and Microsoft pulled out on MUO Cryptic just took all the work they'd gotten done and said to themselves "Ok, this is Champions now."

Champions is widely regarded as an incredibly flexible yet highly-breakable rules system. ChampO is clearly going to have to pull things in a bit and consider what flaws and boosts (?) players can actually assign to powers.
Jack's seen the AT system at work for 4 years or so. Perhaps he's had some ideas about how to refine it, or reversed his original thinking on some of the design issues.

I would have to agree there. All that work and nowhere else to go, why not another license or even CoH 2 ?
