Default Browser difficulties

I had a virus problem this weekend... something called YCMMirage.

Whenever I tried to do anything, it would trigger something called Win 7 Virus 2012 or something, that wouldn't let me run my browser(s) without triggering warning flags and telling me to register the Win 7 thing to fix these problems.

I tracked down the file that was causing the problems and deleted it, but now whenever I try to start my browser (usually Firefox), it asks me what program I want to use to open it with and recommends Windows Media Center.

I can start the browser by running it as Administrator. I have also completely uninstalled Firefox, reinstalled it, and continue to run into the same error. I have Google Chrome and Windows Explorer installed and these are also both affected the same way. I can run them as admin, but otherwise they are treated as unrecognizable programs.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have no idea where the YCMMirage thing came from, but I run Avira Free Anti-Virus and keep it up to date... and that didn't help at all.

I haven't heard of that one before. I ran it through Yahoo, but the sites coming up look very questionable as well just looking at the search engine entries. There seems to be a few referrals to 'buy' this to get rid of it sites.

Download and run Malwarebytes.org, might want to get rkill.com first to stop it first though.

How are those sites not cracked down on my some legal authority when its obvious that the stuff they want us to buy is what's already on our system and causing the problem to begin with, with them saying "pay & register"?

Its like some kind of old school protection racket... except instead of a couple mob enforcers coming in to rough up my shop when I don't pay my protection money, they kick around my system registry and stuff?

I think I am directing this at the right person, but remember a time *BEFORE* spam in your email??

Right, the "internet" is just still full of hokey, unregulated stuff that many people/corporations/ectera (sp) many are still pulling on us innocent users that were here before they were.
