Personal Log of Dr. Jane Devereaux PHD, Director Arykham Asylum
Subject: Deadzone
Date: January 7th, 2005
This log entry is based off of a series of interviews conducted while Deadzone was being held at the Asylum. (My analysis is in no way final and since I no longer have access to him, I have a feeling that this is as good as it's going to get in that regard.....)
Observations and Comments as follows:
Deadzone presents an imposing figure. The thing that so stands out about that comment is that it has almost nothing to do with his height or build but is just the....."aura" that he projects. Much of this may be a result of his mutant ability regarding darkness and, to a lesser extent, be a result of his costume.....however the feeling here is that even if all that was stripped away from him, he would still project....Malice.
It's an uncanny sensation and one that took considerable control to get used to.
While he can be somewhat engaging at times that fact of the matter is he's a killer...make no mistake about that. And never forget it. At times I got the feeling he was toying with me during our conversations...he could be very charming when he wanted, but beneath it all you could always sense the predator.....like a shark, sizing you up....testing you before he strikes.
He's not someone that you would want to turn your back on or wrong in any way. However, he isn't a random killer or a psychotic. He's not the type that would kill someone walking innocently down the street or climb a bell tower with an automatic weapon. When he does kill, he is deliberate and it has to have some sort of reason behind it.
What those reasons are, is a question in itself. He isn't one to talk much about his past.....however he will engage in conversation so long as the focus isn't him. Turn the conversation onto anything but himself however, and he can be quite direct....forceful.....passionate....
His motivations are his own, but judging by his body of work, certain things stand out. He was once a much sought after Mercernary so money was or is a factor. He is also former Military...and has seen a fair share of combat, although that's something he refuses to elaborate on.....whatever happened during his time in has definetely soured him on the whole "God and Country" attitude. Most of his recent battles have been against so called "super heroes". You don't see much in regards to petty crimes....
From the little I was able to gather, Deadzone's childhood was a miserable experience. During one session, he let his guard down and told me that the first thing he ever did in this life was kill his mother. When pressed for clarification, he told me that as he was being born, his mutant ability manifisted itself for the first time. His father told him that during his birth, the umbilical cord was wrapped tightly around his neck, nearly choking the life from him before he was able to take his first breath.
Without conscious thought, (he was a baby after all) he saved his own life by drawing the life force from his mother, killing her on the spot. It wasn't a malicous act and it was nothing he could control, however it drove his father insane with rage and grief. Any thing else about his childhood has been met with a stoney silence and further attempts to probe this area are not welcome.
He has a highly sarcastic sense of humor and world view. To him, people are sheep being led to slaughter. Their faith that a Hero will rescue them has made them weak and dependent. And the Heroes play off this need...they use it for their own benifit......
(Sidenote to Log: I have a feeling that his parents may have been heroes? Not quite sure where the feeling is coming from as he's never actually stated as much, but I'm sure I'm right on this...... Something that bears futher watching but I have to be careful...the results of a mis-step now would be.....bad.)
Random thoughts:
He can be fiercely loyal to those he respects, though gaining that respect is a difficult path.
He is disgusted by weakness and fear.
From watching tape and listening to his descriptions I can conclude that in battle, he is a fearless, relentless and vicious fighter. He asks for no quarter and gives none in return. His ability to litterally sap a person's life force makes him get stronger the longer a fight goes on.
-Along with his mutant ability, he is a highly trained combat fighter. A very, VERY deadly combination.
-His sarcasm is highly evident during battles. He uses a running commentary at times as a way to goad on his enemy into making a mistake.
-His military training makes him a tactical fighter although he's not much into pre-planning or over analysis.
-All he needs to know is his role in a plan and he'll make sure his part is carried out regardless of personal cost.
Off Track:
He seems to be capable of love and signs do point to the fact that he lost someone very close to him....although pressing him on this is a very bad idea. He does have his shields up and outside of his sarcasm he doesn't show much outward emotion to anyone or about anything. As I said, he can definetely turn on the charm if it suits his purpose, but again, the emotion behind it seems....off. Things do slip through from time to time that make you wonder about his true motives, but make no mistake....there isn't a soft and fuzzy center to Deadzone.
You may catch a glimpse of something unexpected from such a man, but a Shark is still a Shark regardless on if it doesn't eat everyone it comes in contact with.....sooner or later it's going to take a bite out of you.

That's about it for now....I'm sure I'll add more to this the more I play him....and also add in experiences from RP's and the like that change or adapt his personality. Dead is one of the first characters I've started playing without having a clear idea on what he's all about....so writing this out has actually helped me get inside his head a bit more.
To sum things up, Deadzone is one bad dude. He has a strong sense of belief in himself and his view on things. I guess the best way to look at him would be a mix of Deadpool and a Batman that's crossed the line.
He doesn't take **** from anyone, but he'll also defer to a leader/person he respects. How a person earns that respect is something I'm still working out. But he/she would have to aspects that Deadzone himself exhibits...
Anyone is free to use him in RP posts/stories. Hell, as with any character I've ever created, he will lose fights. I have no issues with anyone using him as a Nemesis to your hero and even having said Hero beat him in a fight. I'd just like some pre-warning that it's going to happen and have some input as to how it comes down.
If you do use him in that way, just know he'll get his payback....someday.
Anyway, that's it for now. I might add more as it comes to me, but I also wanted to save a good amount for in game and his backstory. Sorry if this got a bit long, but I hope you found it interesting and that it helps define Deadzone as a person and a teammate a bit more.
I'll post up Solace after I've digested/tweaked this a bit more....
I Look forward to reading some of yours. If you don't feel like adding anything, that's fine too. I'll just do things the hard way and track you down in game, tie you to a chair and hold a single bright lightbulb over your head......."Where were you on the night you were created???"
