For the record, your friends want to call her "Spayed" not "Spade." Spade is a shovel, a racial slur, and one of 4 suits from a standard deck of playing cards. Spayed is "fixing" a female animal.

Sorry to be a spelling nazi... just the two are very different and I wanted to clarify. Maybe your friends want to name her Spade because it sounds like spayed, which is what was done to her... but really, that's not that clever a name. If it was a boy cat, would you name it Neuter?

I'm not sure, exactly, but remember its usage from Police Academy (the movie)... one of the two guys you're supposed to hate cadets was looking around at all everyone else showing up and noticed there were a lot of blacks in the crowd, then remarked "There sure a lot of spades..." only to be cut short as he looked to his left and saw 6' 7" of Bubba Smith (football player) and quickly added, "...which I think is good for the academy!"

My guess is that "spade" is a reference to the playing card suit, which is black.

Looking for help again. I had the idea for a DB / Elec Brute, but can't seem to find a name. A guy with blades who stabs victums only to electricute them to death just oozes fun. Concept started as a Darth Maul Rip-Off, 'The Devoted' who devoted his ways to the teaching of the Sith. Then thought of expanding it being 'The Nameless' for those nameless yet cool bad ass killers, with possible future costumes being the Black Knight or a Blackbeared Pirate. Maybe add a history as 'The Fallen' hero to the dark side element as well. Dunno if I'll actually KEEP this villian (as I never seem to), but coming up with a nontaken generic title as it were is starting to drive me nuts. Nightmare of course is also taken, who I love from Soul Caliber who I see as an inspiration. Adding periods and dashes seems to work... but it never hurts to ask for a little creative advice.

I will add to the comments, when CoH first opened up (retail), I "lost" several names I *know* were NOT stolen; since they were so off-the wall-unique. The game just "swallowed" the name and made toon(s) whole. i had to add/change one name because the game assumed it was taken. Later on, with the other toon, I tried making it again but it still swallowed the name. I have not tried since, lo these many years.

I don't think it works like that. Having a shield will change animations so specific attacks that use two hands will end up looking different (or maybe just animate normally with a shield on the arm). But certain powersets are all two-handed attacks, like katana and dual blades... they have to change every animation in the set to make them work.

I'll be curious to see how this flies then as it is the first set that will completely exclude other sets. Based on the common attitudes of players I expect vitriol and mass "I'm quitting" messages.

Yeah, two handed animations from existing sets will be altered to be one handed with a shield. So for instance Stone Mallet will be used one handed if you have a shield. The same goes for Broadsword's Headsplitter, which uses both hands, and two handed attacks like Haymaker/Air Superiority. I'm guessing Flurry and Jump Kick will also be changed in some way, although I'm not sure how or how significant it will be. (The animation times will have the remain the same, that was the whole point of all those animation time changes BaB's been doing. I suppose actually Flurry and Air Superiority could bash with the shield instead of changing the animation. Jump Kick, though, that's going to be a problem, unless the Shield can be sheathed and redrawn)

Dual Blades, though, can't be changed because if you have only one blade, it isn't Dual Blades any more. Likewise, Claws, which requires use of both hands for the set. Although IIRC Claws hasn't been mentioned, but I don't see how they can get around the problem. I suppose Spines could be redesigned to only extend spines from one hand, however Claws has customizable weapons that are specified for each hand, so I don't think they can change that without serious changes to the game. So likely Claws and Spines will be out as well as Dual Blades.

With Katana, the issue is that the Katana is left handed. The Shield will also be left handed. So they can't have both weapons in the same hand. I suppose they could change all the animations so the Katana is held in the right hand if you have a shield, but I'm guessing this gets back to the problem with customizable weapons, they can change the animation, but they can't change the hand the weapon is in.

I suppose that since BaB made the statement about Shields, they may have decided to go ahead and change all the animations and resolved any issues with customizable weapons. I mean, I suggested at the time that Dual Blades be changed to a single blade and shield if you try to select both. The animations would clearly have to be changed, but you could use the shield as a sort of substitute weapon to attack with that set, maybe slashing with the edge or bashing the foe with it in combination with the blade. I have heard no such information, though, so we will have to wait and see. (And there's still the fact that it's not technically "Dual Blades" :D)

And of course there's the fact that Castle indirectly confirmed that Shields isn't compatible with Ninja Blade and Dual Blades when he confirmed that Stalkers won't be getting Shields after all. :think:

I may have had the two confused. Then again, most of not all of Katana's attacks are two handed, that's why the custom weapons all have to have the long hilt.

I wonder if you could get generic'd for playing as a fictional character who's passed into the Public Domain. That would actually open a lot of fun possibilities, in a "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" sort of vein.

If its truly public domain, there should be no problem. However, even characters in the public domain have loopholes. Its the old Thor/Hercules/Dracula problem... technically, legally, you can make characters based on these and other fictional beings. However, if there are other interpretations out there, you have to be careful not to look like those characters.

For example, Marvel Comics has an interpretation of Thor... you can't make a Thor of your own that would look like him. Likewise, Hercules is also fair game for anyone, but you can't look like Marvel's or DC's versions of him, nor should he look like Kevin Sorbo. In these cases, the companys' own their distinctive likenesses of these characters, not the characters themselves.

However, good luck making even an original interpretation with one of those names. The crack legal skills of the NCSoft staff will shoot you down the moment someone else reports you for not recognizing that these characters are fair game. And the names are likely pre-banned under the assumption that either A) ignorance of the intricacies of trademark law and/or B) they don't trust the players with those names because they expect everyone to make ripoffs of the well-known trademarked images. You can argue an original interpretation, but good luck in that arena. Logic seems to fall on deaf ears.

BTW, if you don't already know, there's a couple of ways to check this for yourself, for future name checks. You can log in, pick your server, then click the button on the character select screen that says "Check Name". Alternatively, if you're already in game, try and /friend the name you have in mind. If you get a reply stating something along the lines of 'not in game at this time', you have a fighting chance at getting the name.

I have one character (villain) that uses the "of Doom" convention (Widow-Maker of Doom). You can almost add it to the end of any name (such as "Captain" etc. is added to the front of names) to get what you want... *IF* you want the append "of Doom" in your name.

Heck, you could name your self "Candyland...of Doom", "Superman of Doom" and "Mahatma Ghandi of Doom"....stuff like that there! :D

It gets silly if overused IMO. :D
