Jake sat on top of a building, occasionally looking down and making sure that the gathered members of the 5th Column were still there, still spouting their superiority statements; which was all just “blah, blah, blah” to Jake. He didn’t like them, and he’d been told to keep an eye on this group by his dad for some time now. As he saw they looked like they had found their little spot to spout out and attempt to recruit others that they felt were “their kind” he returned his attentions to the handheld game he’d been playing.
“Yes! I’ve just beat my old score!” The young man, more by responsibility than age, as he was quite young, but well trained for this kind of thing, wasn’t worried about being spotted or heard. He’d always figured that a red, blue and star-covered suit wasn’t for sneaking, and since he was quite able to absorb hits of almost all kinds and immediately turn them into forceful attacks he didn’t care if they spotted him. The game he played aside, he was just bored.
He paused and once again looked over the edge of the roof and saw that a robed figure was approaching the group of 5th Column members, and they didn’t ready their weapons so he was sure this was what his Father, Quake, had asked him to watch for. He knew Quake never liked the 5th Column, and he wasn’t fond of them either, but his father was sure they were doing something to once again try and shift more power their way. He reached for his comm and was about to send the message to Quake that would bring him here to attack, capture and question the robed figure when he grinned to himself and reached out his hands in front of him. They glowed with a radiant energy that remained from both previous attacks that strengthened him, as well as maintaining a “base” level of energy to use to attack.
He cocked his head to the side and his grin faded slightly as he witnessed that his energy wasn’t as luminous as he’d like, and he let out a sigh as he realized he’d been up on the building for too long to keep the energy he’d had from the Outcast gang member that broke a mallet of stone on his arm a few hours ago. He once again reached for the comm and transponder and teleported his things to his home, something he’d done often after losing his favorite MP3 player when he sat it down to save a robbery victim. His non-heroic items vanished in a slow flash, and then he set his comm to call for Quake, but before he said a thing he smiled very wide as an idea came to him as to how he’d have some fun with the bad guys below and how he could do it without his Father. He didn’t want to be too disrespectful, so he set his comm to automatically contact Quake in five minutes; he thought that would be all the time he would need to have some fun.
The hooded figure had finished whispering to the gathered members of the 5th Column when he began stepping back. Seeing this, the members readied their guns and other weapons and began looking around. “I feel a hero nearby, and approaching rapidly, maybe a speed-based hero, be alert!”
Quietly at first, then growing louder the group of racists and the hooded figure heard some kind of scream. As it approached, they looked up and saw someone heading straight down at them, and they ran as they realized the person wasn’t flying, they had jumped from a very high place and were heading right at them, shouting loudly, “Wooooooo-hooooooo!”
Shakester bounced off of the ground, shattering the concrete a bit and watching some of the ‘Column fall to the ground from the impact, he could hear himself laughing as his hands started to glow very brightly from the energy he absorbed and thought it was worth the minor bruise he’d probably have for a day or so. The gang attacked as soon as he bounced up from the impact, most of them firing wildly, Shakester felt some of the bullets hit him and grinned as he pivoted in air and turned himself to land on his feet. Leaping around the city and being particularly difficult to hurt gave him lots of practice, and his training into some acrobatics was helping him for the few times he misjudged his jumps.
Landing on his feet from his near-ten foot bounce into the air after crashing into the ground, he was engulfed in flames from one of the 5th’s flamethrowers, which he rushed towards and felt himself beginning to sweat as he thrust both fists into the chest of his attacker and the energy crackled and sent the now-unconscious man flying backwards and landing on his back. Shakester turned and was met by a hail of bullets from the remaining three members as he charged them, letting loose a few jokes that was sure to keep their guns aimed straight at him, and not at anyone that couldn’t take some high-caliber bullets without a serious trip to the hospital. He leapt strait at the two closest to each other, and caught them off guard with his sudden jump towards them as he lunged into them with several hits from his fists, which continued to glow brightly from all the energy he fed on from their bullets and with a seven punch combo between the two, he spun with his last punch towards the last member of the 5th Column and smiled as he started running away.
He’d taken two steps after the fleeing man when he felt like slapping his head for forgetting the whole reason he’d been asked to watch this group, and just as he turned to make sure the robed man hadn’t escaped he saw that the top of the robe had been pulled back, and a balding, sickly and pale looking “man” was sneering at him as a bolt launched from his head and struck Shakester square in the chest. Jake felt the pain as his head told him his body was shattered and screamed as he was flung backwards and into a building, smashing a window and landing hard on the ground trying to get his mind focused to ignore the mental attack that was making him feel so much pain. He was able to recover pretty quickly and wondered what new kind of Vampyri the 5th Column was making when another blast struck his mind and he fell forward and out the window back down to the concrete ground. He could hear the Vampyri chiding him, “Your body is strong, yes…but I am becoming more powerful than you will in you soon to be short life! Your head is going to be mine, boy!”
Shakester’s vision was blurred, his body was feeling pains that he knew he couldn’t be really having and hated this guy, someone that was probably a normal ‘Column idiot with a gun a few days ago from the looks of him, gloating and causing him so much pain. He could hear him, but his ears felt like there was someone screaming at him also. He smirked a bit at the thought of someone actually having his head on some wall, next to the deer and the squirrel this guy probably ran over, and then fell back against the base of the building as the next of the mental attacks made him grimace.
The psychic attacks had made him angry, and somewhat afraid, since he knew it would be another minute or so before his Father would get here. “Sometimes it’s bad to be so efficient at beating these losers.” He thought to himself as he fell to his knees. Then he heard the statement echo in his mind, probably from the mental attacks, or a possible attempt to read his mind, which he hoped wasn’t the case as the words “Your head will be mine!” again echoed in his ears, and with that thought, feeling his body begin to get very heavy, he braced his feet against the building’s base and murmured, “Be careful what you wish for…” as he launched himself into a leap straight into the Vampyri. His head slamming straight into the ugly man’s face and watched him fall limply unconscious as he smiled, and fell to the ground himself, looking up at the clouds.
He began to think he was done for as he started hearing another voice, worried that there were two of those near-Vampyri guys around as his head cleared a bit, and realized it was his Father, Quake, gently lifting him up and looking at him sternly for not contacting him first. He heard Quake telling him how he needed to stop being so careless at times, and the importance of working as a team and family when Jake brought a finger to Quake’s lips, shushing him as he said, “Okay, dad…I get it, I’m grounded. Can we go home now and get me a couple of aspirin and maybe a dark room, cool washcloth for my head, oh, and uh…I think I’m going to be sick…”
Smiling, Quake helped Shakester to his feet and walked him over to sit down next to a trash can and stated, “Son, you’re funny, but you are still grounded when we get home. Now, hang on and let’s find out what new thing these 5th are up to.” With that, he watched proudly as his Father began interrogating some of the men, making sure to blindfold the Vampyri-looking one so he couldn’t focus his mind on someone. As he threw up for the third time, he realized that he’d stumbled onto something big. Normally only a rare few were able to become the Vampyri of the 5th Column, but what if they’d found a way to give even more members the mental powers that came with the change, and that they still looked human enough to walk around without much attention. He hoped he would be allowed to check into this later, but felt he’d done enough for now.
