Michael Stone had a very normal life. His parent's weren't rich but did well enough. They owned a hardware store that Mike had been working in since he was a boy. He had an older brother in the military that he was very proud of. All in all life seemed pretty good, but such things aren't meant to last.
When Mike was 12 his brother, Jake, lost a leg during a conflict overseas and was discharged. Mike was horrifief by what happened but Jake took it in stride stating that everything happens for a reason, even this.
Three years later, Mike and Jake's parents were killed in a car accident. This left Jake to care for Mike and manage the store. Mike did his best to keep a stiff upper lip, but these tragedies always weighed heavily upon him. He kept wishing he had the power to help. Be careful what you wish for.
More time passes and the now adult Mike and his brother are shutting down the shop after a long day. While Mike finishes cleaning up Jake heads out back to take out the trash. After a bit, Mike wonders why jake is taking so long and goes to check. He is stunned by what he sees. His brother is slumped against the alley wall, his shirt awash with blood. He ran to his brother, frantically checking for a pulse. So focused was he that he did not notice that his brothers attackers had not left the alley yet.
The Hellions were nearing the end of the alley when they heard a door open. They turned to see a new target holding the old and thought another quick score was cool. They stalked back to make some easy cash.
Mike barely heard them approach, but when he saw who they were and the blood covered blades in their hands something in him clicked. These men had to pay and he had to make them. He slammed the ground with his fist and released all his anger and hurt in one tremendous torrent. The energy blast threw the thugs from their feet leving them stunned and disoriented.
Mike, now aglow with power, approached one of the thugs. He dragged one to his feet by his collar, intent on exacting vengence. The Hellion was seconds away from having his head removed when Mike felt a hand on his shoulder. He whirled in anger, ready to kill any who would stand in his way. he gazed into the new foes face and there was recognition there. Mike knew him.
”Grampa?”, Mike said in surprise.
”There is little time to explain now. We have to get Jake to the hospital quickly.”, the old man stated. he moved to touch both of the brothers and in a flash of light they were at Chiron Medical Center Emergency Room.
There was a flurry of activity around him as the staff rushed to tend to his brother. Mike didn't notice. He was dazed, partly because of the teleport but mostly by the startling revaltion that his grandfather was alive. He had though the Grampa had died when he was a boy. Everyone in the family thought so, even his grandmother.
”Come on, Mikey. Jake's in ggod hand and I have a lot to tell you and not much time to do it.”, Grampa said as he clasped Mike's shoulder and teleported them away.
They reappeared in a old lab somewhere in Atlas Park.
”I know you have a hundred questions Mike and I'd love to answer them but my time is short. I let everyone think I had died in the Rikti invasion and it wasn't far from the truth. I was so badly injured that my own powers were killing me. The gauntlets I'm wearing supress the effect but not forever.”, he explained while picking searching his workbench for something.
Finding a box he takes it and turns to Mike presenting it.
“Here. Take these. They are gauntlets similar to mine. They'll limit our powers and help you control them until you are ready for your full power to be unleashed. There is a problem, though.”, Grampa explained as he begins to glow softly.
“I'm sorry Mike, but I have to go now.“
“What do you mean, Grampa? What's the problem?“, Mike asked.
The glow around Grampa was growing. “Some of the parts in your gauntlets are unique. I only know of one place to find them. My gauntlets.“
“What?!“
“All the information you need is here, you have but to look for it. My time is up, my boy. Go and shake thing's up. I'll be watching.“ and with that Grampa faded away.
Mike stifled his tears and searched thru the lab, finding all about his grandfather's past. Taking his grandfather's old costume and making it his own.
”Shake things up, huh? Fine by me, Grampa. Then I'll be Quake.” and he launched into the sky.
