I need unfettered music downloads. I don't mind paying for songs (usually), but I need to buy the *song* and not just the fair use license.

Down with iTunes! !$@^#&ing Mac elitist crap.

grrrrr.

I'm making a mix CD as a gift to my graduating seniors, and iTunes has its nose all up in my business, making it hard for me to copy the number of CDs I need, not having all the songs I want, and keeping their proprietary format all exclusive in its safe little hidey hole of snobbery and greed.

<raises fists and stomps around>

I want to use Napster, but it won't work with my iPod (see above about the safe little hidey-hole of snobbery and greed).

<shakes fist at the heavens>

Again, the Man is getting in my way. I was just trying to do something nice for my kids. Sheesh!

<fumes>

Just had to get that off my chest. Thank you. I now return you to your regularly-scheduled gentle Alumette.

Tark, your sketch is totally appropriate for the moment. :)

I in no way approve of this message... but have you tried Limewire?

Anyway to recap: Property is Theft. (atleast Corporate Property.)

Heh, thats never fun.
Fortunately, when it comes to downloading songs, Emule (http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1&rm=download) seems to do the job alright. As opposed to Napster, Kazaa and other such junk.
Thats what im using, anyway. Or rather... my friend is using. :eyebrow:

By the way, what songs were you planning to throw in there, if i may ask?

Making a mix CD for a gift is considered fair use (I happen to have a copyright/IP attorney on retainer). Furthermore, there is a broader fair use exception for educational purposes and this is something I'm doing for students.

The problem is, with iTunes, you buy the license to use the song and not the song itself, and iTunes puts limits on the terms of the license.

LimeWire works for getting the songs, but since I download the access to the song, rather than the song itself, it's the same problem as with iTunes. Except iTunes won't even let me move LimeWire songs to my iPod, because of their proprietary format (read: greed for all the market, and fear of getting sued for enabling piracy).

I do appreciate these suggestions that all of your friends are sharing. :) I need to get a different portable mp3 player is what I need to do. But, the iPod was a gift, so I shouldn't complain.

I think I've found a workaround for the time being.

What sucks is, I spent all this time finding the songs, and designing a CD cover and everything. I did it myself in PhotoShop, even, and for those of you who know my skill level in PhotoShop (or lack thereof), that in itself is quite a feat.

I would never ever in life reccomend *wink* peer guardian *wink* to mask yourself from *wink* corporate fatcats *wink* or the gubernmint *wink* from seeing you use *wink* a file sharing prog *wink*. No, never. :naughty:

Before you make a huge mistake Alumette -- NAPSTER SUCKS. My mp3 player uses napster, and I can't find ANY of my bands on that thing EVER, it's all commercial pop, rock, crap I don't care about. My suggestion -- get BearShare and download your bands by name.

Of course we all agree that piracy is bad, mmkay?

And that reminds me: Al, I wanted to send you a song I have here. Hope to see you on AIM one of these days.
