SEATTLE - About 1.5 million homes and businesses in Washington and Oregon had no power early Friday after howling windstorms and heavy rains caused at least three deaths, closed two major bridges and prompted flooding.

One of the concourses at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was without electricity, and an airport spokesman said some flights were canceled.

About 30 flights were scratched at Portland International Airport, a spokesman said, and Amtrak canceled service between Portland and Seattle.

A 41-year-old Seattle woman died Thursday after she became trapped in her basement while it flooded. Neighbors had called for help after they heard screaming.

Also in Washington, two people died in traffic accidents involving windblown trees.

In Edmonds, north of Seattle, about 50 residents of an assisted living facility were evacuated after a tree crashed through the third floor, flooding the building, Snohomish County emergency management officials said. No injuries were reported, and residents were sent to other facilities.

The hardest hit area was King County, which includes Seattle, where drenching rain accompanied the first wallop as the storm hit Thursday afternoon, slowing commuters to a crawl. The winds picked up again around midnight.

"That second one is when we saw the greatest number of outages, after midnight," said Dorothy Bracken, a Puget Sound Energy spokeswoman.

Colder temperatures were expected Friday as the storm passed and winds calmed, bringing heavy snow to lower elevations.

About 700,000 customers of Puget Sound Energy were in the dark early Friday and about three-fourths of the circuits were down in the company's nine-county service area, spokesman Roger Thompson said.

When repair crews were sent to assess damage "they've had to pull back," Thompson said. "It's just been too hairy out there."

Some customers won't have their lights back on for days, he said.

Other utilities reported about 300,000 customers without power.

The Evergreen Point floating bridge, which links Seattle and its eastern suburbs, remained closed early Friday and numerous other highways were blocked because of high water or windblown trees. The Hood Canal floating bridge, which links Washington's Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas, and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge were reopened early Friday after being closed Thursday evening because of wind gusts up to 74 mph.

In Oregon, Portland General Electric reported that power had been lost to about 245,000 of its customers — about 30 percent of its service territory.

"That shows you the effect of the combination of wind and downed trees can have," said Mark Fryburg, a PGE spokesman.

Pacific Power, which covers most of the rest of the state, reported 105,000 customers had lost electricity by Thursday night.

The Oregon Department of Transportation closed three major highways crossing the Cascade Range because of fallen trees or downed power lines, and winds gusted past 90 mph on the Oregon coast.

The National Weather Service said rainfall was expected to be as high as 8 inches on the coast and 5 inches in the Cascade Range, with snow at higher elevations.

Rain drenched Qwest Field in Seattle just before kickoff of the NFL game between the Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. The rain left standing water on the field, and about 30 minutes before kickoff, a power surge briefly knocked out the large video screens at both ends of the stadium.

Seattle public schools were closed Friday, as were numerous smaller school systems and The Evergreen State College in Olympia.

Bummer :(

Didn't have power here in the office till about 10AM. Leave me with half a day to get this Friday's shipping done. Well, actually, with about 1 hour. YAY!

Also meant missing a critial delivery that will delay several shipments and cause some Christmas related fun!

I saw on the news this morning footage of the football game last night where the field was moving around like waves, it was pretty creepy.

There was a reason I wasn't on the air last night. I've been without power since sometime around 6pm Thursday. Spent the night at home between Thursday and Friday. Then moved into a hotel last night (I'm on their wifi) 3/4 of the floor I'm on is with people who do not have power to their homes. I looked out the window just now and I'm glad I'm here instead of in my cold house. Everything is frozen out there.

PGE said in their messages "We do not know the cause and do not know when power will be restored in your area". I can tell you the cause a broken power pole and several large trees blocking the end of the street. I'll try to get some pics later on today. I've only seen it in the dark. They are saying possibly by monday we'll have power. Oh and that report, Grae is wrong in the amount of people without power at the peak of the storm. There were 350,000 in the portland metro area alone.

I have come to the conclusion the power company here is run by idiots. Spoke with an actual human being just a bit ago. "We did not know it was a downed line" Can someone go over there and slap them please!

Oooh! An idea! Have a slap session during the friday show just to go into the weekend with clear thoughts. hee hee hee! Have people send in, live, who they want slapped and then have a slap sound effect or something.

Okay this not being able to be at home is getting to me. We reserved for another night here. *sigh* Maybe going and spending money today will help. *goes off to get cleaned up and go shopping*

Yikes!

I'll get pics from around our place. I kept thinking the neighbors' apple and pear trees were going to come through the back. Glad they didn't though. One of the neighbors lost a fence and several trees are just laying on the street. I'll try to get one of the pole and the trees that they barricaded off.

The power here stayed on until I went to bed, but I woke up on Friday morning and everything was dead. I didn't go to work yesterday because I couldn't get a hold of anybody on the phone. Apparently, three of the four roads that lead out of my neighborhood were completely closed due to fallen trees and downed powerlines. They had them mostly cleaned up by the afternoon though.

As oh wondrous fortune and joy would have it, I ended up having to make the drive down the last open road to pick someone up. It was like a warzone. About 40-50% of the trees in a small forest across the street from a school close to me had been knocked over. There were several places where powerlines were holding up trees suspended over the road. In one spot, the powerlines laid haphazardly in the street, there was no way to avoid them so drivers just had to go over them and hope for the best. The scariest tree was probably the one that rested horizontally like a bridge about eight feet over the road, lifted by a small hill on one side.

I really wish I had thought to take a camera with me.

I'm lucky I was early enough to avoid most of the traffic that one road eventually got leading out of there. I got to see it on the way back.

Yesterday afternoon was spent mostly sleeping and trying to entertain a sick baby. Something like this really puts it into perspective about how much you take modern conveniences for granted.

The power finally came back on at 10:05 this morning, after a day and a half of downtime. There are still places near here that have no power though.

Did you happen to see that huge nasty 3 car wreck on 148th going south yesterday morning?

Yay! Home again and on my computer *hugs computer*. I had pictures of the mess around here but my camera decided to wipe them out as soon as I started transfering them so no pics to show. :( They finally chainsawed the trees and the power pole then got the lines back up. Couple houses here are still without power though. The neighbors' fence is on the ground now. Weird being able to actually see their backyard. They have an outdoor kiln back there! My other neighbors across the drive managed to put their holiday lights back up too. The other good news was my freezer managed to keep everything frozen

Nope. I haven't been to Bellevue in about a week.

Well we narrowly escaped going back into the dark again. A power substation blew up. Its still burning and they just now managed to get a power crew in there. Two blocks over from me everything is out including signals. I actually saw the fire when it initially went up, from the freeway. It was impressive to say the least. Here's (http://www.katu.com/news/4938386.html) a news story
