Third Article down
IGN has several firsthand and translated articles detailing problems with specific PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games played via the PlayStation 3's backwards compatibility feature. In an article dated yesterday, IGN translated numerous game titles from a page on Sony's Japanese site. Problematic games, whose issues ranged from a lack of sound to save errors to visual glitches, include Tekken 5, Xenosaga Episode II, Gran Turismo 4, Onimusha, Silent Hill 2, and others. In an article published today, IGN comments on a CNET Japan article containing a full list of 196 games with backwards compatibility issues. Apparently, Sony responded with a statement that backwards compatibility was never expected to be 100%, and that some people do not mind playing games without sound. Fortunately, the company also stated that these issues will be addressed in an eventual system update.
...
Let me make this stand out more
Sony responded with a statement that ... some people do not mind playing games without sound.
AHAHAHAHAHAH
Good thing they made sure huge titles like Tekken and Silent Hill carried over!
So....this, plus, last I heard, all the big launch titles were half done. PS3 is turning out to be an even bigger piece of shit. Riiiidge Racer!

¡Viva la Wii! :D
I just can't see any of the appeal in a PS3.
So... anyone else going to line up for a Wii on Saturday? I'm planning on it.
I've never lined up for a console before though. Anyone have an idea of what would be a good time to go?

I, personally, find it amusing.
It'd be one thing if the PS3 was cheap, but this is a SIX-HUNDRED DOLLAR SYSTEM you're paying for!!! Those kinds of failures should be UNACCEPTABLE for a system that's THAT god damn expensive.

While I dont plan on getting a PS3 anytime soon, nor do I care about it at the moment, saying its Failed outright is kind of jumping the gun dont you think? Theres no Black and White to videogames. You cant really just look at somthing and go "Failed" or "Passed" Without waiting for the test of Time. Now I admit its a little sucky that those games wouldnt work correctly, butttttttt, then you look at XBOX360's Backwards Compatability issues. Yeah.
I recall Sega stating Dreamcast was a Success, only to get canned a few years after release. Test of time my friend. Now I'll definently say the Wii will most definently dominate the sales this month when the two come out, but thats cause I'm adding up the numbers and the PS3's Profits are only shorter then the Wii's profits by about 30million. Of course these are Profits that go beyond 100million in scale. Its a large number but I seriously doubt the PS3 will not be a Success given Sonys track record. They can pump up the price and people will buy it. PSP for example. Then theres the fact that there were giant lines in Japan for it, and the worse case scenario would just mean Sony would drop out of games all together, which would all out suck, leaving Microsoft to monopolize the market(Wii's hardware isnt near as good as the 360's. though Wii is built on a gimic)
In this hardware age, the Wii reminds me of the N64, comparing the XBOX360 to the PSX(XBOX360 actually does have more power then the PS3 so I'm using that.) So the Wii will be a success, but it will be limited by its hardware, and the fact that the motion sensetive controls will make uneducated parents just view it as another toy and not a piece of Entertainment hardware.
So with the Pros and Cons of both, just remember that all Systems have Pros and Cons. The original Nintendo DS can break easily(just ask my brother), the PS2 had problems with CDs, XBOX360 had a problem with Over heating(Cause people were idiots with it to begin with but its easy to manage), Wii will probably have problems with its Sensor Bar.
So in the end, you cant call it a Failure yet. It could be, you never know. But in the end what makes the PS3 so expensive is the Blueray. if they stuck with DVD with having a optional 200 dollar blueray, then it would be as expensive as a XBOX360(Which I'm thinking of getting the HD Player for it. I can stomack spending 600 dollars on a system if I dont spend it all at once)

No sound? It's a feature, not a bug!
Supply your own music from one of Sony's rootkitted CDs! "User generated audio content" is the latest thing in games! Next we'll have a blank screen for $400 and YOU get to make the game visuals happen in your imagination! Yaaaaaay!
Sarcasm gun reholstered, I have to say I'm kinda.. disappointed in what I'm hearing so far about the PS3. I've been a Playstation fan since the first one game out, bummer on this news. :\

And another nail to the PS3's coffin. Not that wii europeans care anymore, after the console has been postponed to march next year.
All Hail, King Wii! I will get a Wii too, sadly I wii'll have to wait 3 more weeks, but then I wii'll most likely get in line at the local tech store.
Who wants to play Bowling against mii?
P.S. I heard that the Wiii title "Exite Truck" will allow the player to listen to his own MP3's while playing (either via USB-LAN to the PC or USB-Stick, no idea). That sounds like a nice addition.

By tje way, I found out over the weekend, through my helpful Best Buy employee, that it does't even get HD out of the boc, it's 480p, and you need to buy a $100 HDMI cable to get HD.
Bitter Babe

Of course it wouldn't get HD out of the box. I bought an HDTV last year and unless I had the HD box from Comcast I wouldn't have it.
I know I'm still being made to wait in line for the PS3, although it's going to rain so that is gonna suck :(

I like how X360 said up front what was required for backward compatability and that not all titles would be backwards compatable.
Sony said "oh yea total backward compatability" up till launch day in Japan then posted on their web site that not all games worked. Ouch.
While I'm not looking to buy a Wii, and have a 360, I do think that this generation PS3 will end up 3rd, with 360 and Wii fighting for first (with Wii edging out 360 ftw)

That's because there were few third party support, and it entered into a time where the X-Box and PS2 was coming down the pipe. It was too advance to compete against n64 and PS1, and not advance enough for xbox and ps2.
Also, it has been confirmed as far as how things go, that the Wii, will be able to play games as far back as NES. Also, the 360 has more games out, and the Wii has a ton of games at launch.

I liked the Dreamcast. I still have mine. It's problem was bad timing, it was released too soon, and was sort of a "half generation" up instead of a full generation like the competition. So Sega really had no choice but to pull it.
What I notice is that PS3 won't play Xenosaga Ep.2. I haven't even gotten around to playing it yet, or Ep.3, but I can't see getting a system that it won't run on. I still play the first one. But hopefully they'll fix the problems in a later update.
Personally, I feel Sony is not yet ready to let go of the PS2. That's why they've priced the PS3 so high and allowed the problems. The people who absolutely MUST HAVE the latest and greatest thing will get a PS3, but Sony's plan is for the PS2 to stay around for a few more years for the lower end market. We're already getting games for both platforms, and that's been pretty rare in the industry previously. Usually the gamemakers migrate to the new platform immediately, and the old one is abandoned. Seen any PSOne games lately? :D
Bitter Babe

Well no matter how highly they are priced people are still going to pay for it. I called a Best Buy near where I live and people started camping out this morning.

That's because ... [Dreamcast] entered into a time where the X-Box and PS2 was coming down the pipe. It was too advance to compete against n64 and PS1, and not advance enough for xbox and ps2.
Yeah, I really think it was that Microsoft moved in and Sega had no choice but to move out. They gambled on releasing their next generation a bit early, and lost. I think they might have been able to compete with PS2 and GameCube, but with XBox in the picture they had no chance.
Which again is why I think Sony is learning from the past. They can't let XBox release their console, wait a "half generation" and then release the PS3 because it'll get killed by the next generation. But they are either not quite ready for the next generation (thus the problems) or the development cost was so much they want to recoup it in the PS2. So they're gambling on pricing the PS3 out of the low end market, leaving room for PS2, then dropping the price later.
It may pay off, or like Sega, it may prove to be their fatal mistake. I do think it solves some of their earlier problems they had with the PS2 release, though, like shortages. By the time they lower the price they'll have gotten the bugs out, and there won't be such a rush to be the first one to get it.

Fact of the matter is, that PS3 is WAY too expensive for all of these bugs and errors.
Do you guys know about the code based games? Each game you buy gets registered with your "ps3 code". If you want to lend that game to a friend, you have to go to his house and input your ps3's "code" before he can play. Of course he could just write down the code, but imagine how fun it will be keeping a little booklet or scrap of paper around with various codes you need.
With used games, you have to transfer ownership through Sony or something, and pay Sony a "used game fee" to do so.
GOD! What the fuck are they doing?! Not just one horrible little mistake, DOZENS!

If this rumor with the "registered" games is true, then this is one of the biggest bulls**** I have ever heard in my whole life. This would make eBay totally useless and would only enforce hacking and piracy. Cuase if you have to buy a game and can never ever sell it again, you will think about getting it illegaly and therefore crackers will crack this system and gamers will only get the cracked games. Totally Bulls**** as I said.

The Dreamcast died because the shadow of the PS2 was huge and once people found out any normal CD burner could make a game it was pretty much dead. It's funny because their still making games for it in Japan, I got Under Defeat from Play-Asia a few months ago and it rocks hard.
I knew that this was going to happen with the backwards compatibility. The PS2 had it's fair share of problems but 196 games? Zoinks that's a lot of em'. I was all for the region free ness' of the PS3, but I bet dollars to donuts that the three Import PS2 games I have won't work. (King of Fighters XI, Twinkle Stars Sprites and the Gunstar Treasure Box)
They SAY that it might improve with further firmware upgrades, but fuck that. 600 bucks it should play EVERYTHING. I kept laughing at the news, all these assholes camped out in tents outside a Circuit City, waiting a WEEK. Bet their all mamma's boys that don't have to work for everything.
I'm in the wait and see category with the PS3. The PS2 had the most verity of all the systems this current generation, but with the high price a lot of companies aren't supporting them. SNK/Playmore said no PS3 support till 2008, they want to see if it's even worth making games for since their a smaller company.
PS. I though Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (PSGM) sucked compared to the Anime/Manga. Check out YouTube, you can see them. It worked better as a cartoon and I didn't like many of the actors they picked.

ECW!!! ECW!!!
The Best Buy arguments have started! I got this from a poster at IGN.
Went to Best Buy tonight, saw the camping line, and decided to be friendly. I spoke to a few people to see what they were buying in THIS specific line (all said PS3), and if they planned on getting all of the new consoles. Everyone seemed really happy to speak about their experience so far--most of the people there hadn't ever camped out prior to this event.
Well, a couple people in line weren't so happy about it.
Down the line a bit, someone initiated a verbally abusive fight against another person in line, calling him a prick. Of course, the focus turned to them, and apparently, at least in my opinion, the yelling was justified. Apparently, one guy had been boasting to another about how he took 3 days off from work to camp to get the system. Great! Except.. he took the days off so that he could get a PS3, only to sell it on eBay to re-coop the costs of missing work, plus to make a bit extra (which, is probably very likely). Well, the man he was speaking with was camping out for his son, trying to get one for him for Christmas--I can only imagine the anger in that man's mind.
Best quote: "You're a prick! I didn't know a couple hundred bucks is enough to ruin a child's Christmas!!!!" angry angry
I am hoping to get a Wii on launch day, but I will not be waiting in line for that long (praying I can get one if I show up around 6:30am). However, as much as I wasn't going to be waiting in line for a PS3 anyways, now I don't even want to go near Best Buy until that launch is out of the way.
Is this a sign of things to come? Anyone else have horror stories about waiting in line for a new console a few days in advance? This situation truly frightened me; those two men have quite a long time to wait--together.
Another person posted that a Best Buy in his local area had campers, they were getting 15 systems, so 15 people are there trying to get it. He said the local paper interviewed them all and all 15 people said "Their selling them on Ebay when they get home" :grr:
It's gonna be just like in Japan. They'll sell all the systems, but NO GAMES! :naughty:

Well, even though this seems like an anti-PS3 post, if just for money. I will post a point.
XBOX360 hasn't been so backward compatible to start off with anyway.
Like Tarby pointed out, at least they were more up-front with it, but needless to say, my XBOX360's backward compatiblity has been SERIOUSLY LACKING! Sure, new games have been added/updated as the year has gone by, but it HAS been a year. Also, some games, even many new ones I bought for my old XBOX still do not work on the 360!
Again, I understand about price of the system and this new glitch of 720 sets, but the 360 is far from perfect itself.
Even though I am going to wait on a system (I have a plan) all I got to say, if it bothers you, get a Wii. The Wii is a great system and I will get one myself. Just realize that the kettle you are calling black is white as well (360).

Yeah it is stupid to stand in line for a game console, especially a week in advance. It must be nice to have no job or life to do that. There are many problems in society, many more important than a video game system. The only reason I could have sat outside is I have today off and well we can afford the system because like responsible people we saved our money for it.
You know the guy who hit the pole probably passed out and woke up asking if he made it in line, probably didn't even care if he was hurt lol

Well, I didn't wait 3 days in line, but I got a PS3, although just a 20 Gig version. I went to many places and some even out of the way ones, but I then heard a rumor that a particular Best Buy in my city (as per one article I read, saying 15 Best Buys in 15 of the top cities would be getting 100+ units in; wasn't sure my city would be chosen).
Anyway, long story short. That best Buy was my last stop. I got in line around 8pm that night. The line started moving at 12:01 am, I went forward to check out things but heard that 26 additional units were going to be held back and sold tomorrow morning at 8am (something about legal obligations since that Best Buy advertised in the paper it would have them at the start of the business day). So, I jumped into the new line. Waited until 8am, got interviewed, had another reporter ask me for my wallet money so she could dramatize that "big bucks were being spent here" to the camera (a wad of twenties I had; about $100). That money also made it on TV, I was in the background, also on TV, but it was early and I bundled up from the cold, so can't really see my face. :D
Everyone marvelled how "lucky" I was and my stories of what was going on in certain Wal-Marts, Targets, Circuit Cities, other Best Buys, and Sam's Club in particular. (Damn those heathens with Business Associate Memberships like I have; I still think they may've been lying out there mouths).
So, I got one, didn't wait that long and...slept when I got home. I did the same during PS2 launch.
Actually, I still gotta say, I am looking forward to my reserved Wii. Should be simpler. :) Gotta agree, Sony really should have covered the launch better in terms of units and problems, but they are a big company. Hopefully any short-comings will be filled.

Heh, considering how crappy the $600 ones, I wouldn't even TOUCH one of the gimp $500 ones. I heard they lack quite a bit compared to the $600 ones.

I'm looking at a $600 PS3 right now and it doesn't seem crappy to me. Right now Madden 2007 is in there and it is spectacular.

Don't be a hate-a. :P
The only major difference btwn the two models is lack of a built-in wi-fi, which I am sure I can work around anyway.
All the other stuff is easily upgradeable, except there are 6 USB ports on the 60GB and only 4 on the 20GB. No built-in Flashcard reader, but that is an easy fix. Oh, and no chrome lettering/trim.
So far, it is impressive. The basketball game is pretty awesome. Going around in a Japanese Gundam mech is great.
I still have a way I can easily upgrade to the higher model if I want. No big worries. :)

Hey, here is a bit of something for you nay-sayers of backward compatibility.
All PlayStation 3 games will be region-free. [50]
Backward compatibility
Sony stated every PlayStation and PlayStation 2 game that observes its respective system's TRC (Technical Requirements Checklist) will be playable on PS3 at launch. SCE president Ken Kutaragi asked developers to adhere to the TRC to facilitate compatibility with future PlayStations, stating that the company was having some difficulty getting backward compatibility with games that had not followed the TRCs. It has been confirmed (image) that initial PS3 units will include the CPU/rasterizer combination chip used in slim PS2 (EE+GS) to achieve backward compatibility.[51] Two days after the release of the PlayStation 3 in Japan, Sony announced that some titles had problems, mostly with sound playback.[52] It has also been reported that some scenes from the Gran Turismo racing game might freeze, the game Suikoden III cannot read data from a first-generation PlayStation, and a virtual gun in one of the Biohazard games will not fire properly.[53] Most of the 7841 titles in Sony's database work; future firmware updates will provide more compatibility. As of November 16, an online firmware upgrade has been posted by Sony that is intended to address some of these issues.[54] PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software will still be limited by region-locking and will not be enhanced or upscaled.[citation needed]
The PlayStation 3 does not include interfaces for legacy PlayStation devices, but there will be an adapter for the memory cards[1] so users can save their PS1/PS2 data[55] on to a virtual memory card in the hard drive. USB devices for PlayStation 2 may be compatible with PlayStation 3. PlayStation 3 can use Memory Sticks to store save data for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software.[56]
