Final Fantasy XII
At first I hated the combat(Thanks to a Demo for the game which came with Dragon Quest 8) I was in morning for real time combat, and was to believe that this thing would end up as just another crappy FFX. FFX almost made me quit FFs. It was above average, yes, but I hated Tidus with a Passion and the story was way too short and linear, with some bad Voice Acting to boot. Some of it is great like Auron. Auron stole the show but the rest. Tidus went from serious to ultra whiny on the drop of a Dime.
Thankfully......I am not greated with horrid voice acting, a short story, lame combat, and annoying characters, but a tapestry of beauty, a fun and realistic combat system, Fan'Fing"Tastic Voice Acting, and a Story as Epic as Toelkins work.
I'll start with the Graphics. The characters look great, with blowing realistic hair that isnt all out there, great facial emotions that even show welts and scars and such. The Main characters actually dont stand out compared to the NPCs, so they actually meld well into the background. The great scenery shows of how impressive the graphics are, with a horizon miles and miles away. The citys feel like real citys, as if Squenix took some notes from KOTOR and KOTOR2. Citizens have jobs, they move about normally, have emotions.
Voice Acting is the best i've ever heard. Not devoting itself to known names, they take a bunch of unknown names with huge talent and make it work, and each Country and race has an Acsent!! The Empire throw British Slang and Vocabulary at you, the Skycity has thick German acsents. I love it. It actually makes the countrys look diverse. And I love Fran's and Balthier's VA's. Balthier comes off as a Jack Sparrow with some Han Solo and the Voice of Agent Smith from the Matrix. Very nice.
Combat is actually simple and easy, though I wont go into detail about it because its hard to explain. But it is nice and fun. Boss Battles can get over your head a bit.
Somthing new to FF is the Lisence board. through combat you earn LP Points that can be spent on new stats, magic, techniques, and the ability to wear new armors. Its like the Sphere Grid, but your characters level up normally also. Only annoying thing about it is you need to spend points to be able to use weapons and such which sucks. Gotta have a Liscense to wear a hat?
The Story is Epic. EPIC. I wont give it away but this is the most serious FF I've ever played. Comedy is replaced by the exciting drama of War, acompanied by a brilliant soundtrack and awesome visuals.
Final Fantasy XII is one hell of a sendoff of this generation of games. I look forward to another great FF on the PS3. FFXII is in my opinion, one of the top FF's that deserves to be ranked high with FF7 and FF6.
