Captain Planet is my hero.
no wait, scratch that, the kid with the power of HEART! is my hero.
"Captain Planet, He's a hero!
Gonna take polution down to zero!
He's the powers maginified, and he's fighting on the planet's side!"
"We're the Planeteers! You can be one too! 'Cause saving our planet is the thing to do! Looting and poluting is not the way, hear what Captain Planet has to say:
THE POWER IS YOURS!"
(I'm slightly ashamed of being able to recite almost the entire song from memory.)
LMAO!
They should do somethin' like that on Robot Chicken. Love that show. I use to steal my mom's ring, and run around the house screaming all of the elements but heart. I always thought his was stupid.

Hehe yeah that's what I was thinking about.
And since I just finished reading Morrison's Invisibles, anyone else surprised as to why they didn't just give him the power of Spirit? That would fit more into the whole magic idea, because technically, that's often refered to as the fifth element magic symbol. It's basically a wild card, who's purpose is to raise morale and "galvanise and revitalise the elements around it".
EDIT: Anyone knows who owns the cartoon? Because it would be an ideal thing to place on AdultSwim in a SeaLabs2021'ish spoof.

There is a Robot Chicken version of Captain Planet. I saw it on YouTube not so long ago.
And I loved that kid with the power of heart. Every other Planeteer got a ring with some destructive / defensive capability. All Ma-Ti got was a ring that could make him feel emotions. Oh, and a monkey.

I have just been informed that the theme song was written by Phil Collins. I'm trying to decide whether I should laugh or cry. Captain Planet was also created, as a concept, by Ted Turner
"Protect the environment, or I'll fucking kill you! Captain PLANET!" (http://www.videoclipped.com/video.php?title=Robot_Chicken_Captain_Planet)

He could also use it to sort of talk to animals. He was like a poor-man's Aquaman, which is pretty bad considering Aquaman is a poor-man's superhero already...

Aquaman used to be a poorman's super hero. He was the guy that could talk to fish, swim fast, and breather underwater. Marvel Comics has a guy like that, too.
Sub-Mariner can talk to fish, swim fast, breather underwater... but he was also super strong, could fly, use certain abilities of sea life (saw him use that electric eel touch thing once, but he has yet to spit ink), had a horn capable of summoning giant sea monsters that could terrorize the land, and he's a friggin' prince of the underseas with all the inherent trash-talking that goes along with that title.
So, DC made Aquaman a king and made him stronger... they cut off his hand and gave him a metal hook, plus lots of attitude. Its laughable, really. At least when he was only able to talk to fish and breathe underwater, he was special in that he was the gag hero everyone laughed about. Now he's a cheap imitation of Prince Namor.

I don't think Namor can talk to fish.

I think you're about 3 reinventions of Aquaman behind, actually.

Not only that, but a blatant Marvel fanboy. ;)

Yeah, Aquaman isn't as much an imitation of Namor The Submariner anymore as he is "Conan under water". I heard the new series was pretty great actually.

I resent that.
In fact, I've come to hate almost everything that Marvel is of late... however, there are some characters which I consider superior to their DC counterparts. Namor is definitely one of them.

I could never get into a whiny underwater dude that had a thing for blonde women. :p
ANYWAY, as Captain Planet goes, at least the first episode, it had ALL this Hollywood support behind it. Some of the following episodes did, as well. Let's see, put out by Ted Turner, song by Phil Collins, voice acted by Whoopi Goldberg (Gaia) and Tom Cruise (Captain Planet; first episode only, I believe). A few other famous and not-so-famous-anymore voice actors.
And while "Spirit" would fit (Ma-Ti IS an indian of sorts), I bet the corporate suits figured "Heart" would appeal to/be understood by the viewing public more than the nebulous-meaning of "Spirit". Again, underestimating your audience. :p

I remember collecting Captain Planet comic books from the bookstore just down the road from where I lived at the time. I still have them somewhere.
I did like the TV show, and it helped me get hooked on the comic book. And it was nice how Captain Planet would actually get pissed off or upset in the comic books now and then. In the TV show, he always seemed to have a smile plastered across his face (whenever he wasn't getting dumped in toxic sludge, that is). He never actually got angry on TV.
I also remember that I only missed one issue of Captain Planet's run before it mysteriously dropped off the face of the Earth after Issue 12. I missed the second half of the Captain Pollution two-parter, which took off right after the eco-villains had just used their rings to summon Captain Pollution ("Smog!" "Deforestation!" "Radiation!" "Hatred!" Whatever the fifth one was!) and there was Captain Pollution looking like Captain Planet's evil twin brother, saying "You guys want this party started, right?" and I totally wanted the next issue but for some reason either I didn't check in with the bookstore often enough or the issue never made it to the bookstore in the first place. :(
I guess I could always try eBay.

Captain Pollution was so much cooler than Captain Planet. He even had a cooler voice-actor.

Oh, yes. I think Captain Pollution did appear on TV too.... :D

Yup, a few times, actually. I think he had . . .2 2-part stories. When they created him, and when they ressurected him. One was in the jungle, and another was in the arctic, I THINK. But my memory is shit.

I'm surprised the eco-villains were allowed to keep their magic rings after the first time. Letting villains control evil artifacts seems to be a universal no-no. :p
