View Full Version : Darwin or Science?
The Freudian Slip

Which bumper symbol should I get for my car? I'm getting tired of seeing the anti-abortion and "Jesus-loves-me-and-not-you"-ish bumper stickers at the Family Christian Store next to where I work, and I've always wanted one of these...so I've narrowed it down to two choices...

I was just thinking the Darwin fish looks closer to what it parodies...but I am a bigger supporter of science in general than just evolution.

I like the science one too. I agree that the darwin one makes more sense intelectually, but the science one gets the message across better, in my opinion.
Also, regarding your sig, a freaudian slip is when you accidently say exactly what you mean. :p

I've always been fond of the Darwin fish myself, but that's probably just because of it's cute little feets.

I've seen the Jesus fish eating the Darwin fish, which just proves Darwin's theory.

I went looking for one of the Darwin fish eating the Jesus fish, but all I could find was the other way around with things like these:

http://www.swansoninc.com/images/56456.jpg
Which, in the great bumper-sticker-smarminess arms race tends to lead to this:

And finally this:

Although apparently that last one's not so much a bumper sticker/magnet as iit is somebody's wood shop project, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did show up on cars at this rate.
Incidentally, I found the perfect one for Freud at Evolvefish.com :D :

The Darwin fish is the best parody and almost more joking then the spaceship even though the spaceship is great

The Darwin one's older and thus to my mind, would show less originality these days. Thus my vote's on the Science one.
I detest the "Jesus fish eating the Darwin fish" one, I consider it mean spirited, and it just doesn't sound like the kind of attitude Jesus would want his followers to have.
Now, the one that parodies the little kid peeing on the truck logo, THAT is original, AND funny. (The Jesus fish is peeing on the Darwin fish, in approximately the same pose) Not that I think Jesus would recommend peeing on anyone, either, but I think He'd appreciate the "cultural rebelliousness" aspects of it.
A friend of mine wanted to get both the Jesus fish and the Darwin fish, and position them like they were kissing. I never did find out if he tried it or not.

Original as in copying Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes?

No, I don't mean the original, with the kid that looks like Calvin, I mean the parody of it. With the Jesus fish.

You know, from my observations, it boils down to some followers of Christ not being easy-going, not having a sense of humor, AND wanting to say the last word.
It always works like this: The Christian side will make an observation, item, bumper sticker, or whatnot that you slowly start to see EVERYWHERE! Heahens (such as myself) wonder what the heck that symbol is for and then find out. Needless to say, one then starts to see it in too many places. The secret, is no longer a secret. Even clueless romans probably know the meaning by now. :p
Then, the science (or fun-loving) side, getting bored with seeing so many symbols and seeing an easy target, will make a small joke about it, either a reply, or similiarly worded joke, or slightly changed symbol. Fun for most.
Well, then you see the christian side getting angry over this. Then they will cook up a response, trying to get the "last word" in. This *always* seems to happen, either dressed up as comedy or part of a serious discussion. It's like they can't handle it. So, they pick something that effectively trumps the "science/fun's" joke. I've even seen this attitude go as far as religous supporters actively tearing off Darwin fish and bumper stickers that make light of church teachings (effectively vandalism). Although not uncommon, I rarely see the "science/fun" side going around and tearing off the overabundance of tediously mind-numbing imagery off the christian's sides property; the vast majority always seem to be "miffed" christians that just can't stand a poke to their beliefs.
I vote the ship, since I have never seen it, but whatever you get, I'd suggest to at least by 2-3 extras, just in case. You may not need them, but you never know.

Yeah, I was worried some ass would rip it off, too. I saw the Truth fish eating the Darwin fish the other day, accompanied by a "got Jesus?" liscence plate cover. Yeah. That's right. This woman in her SUV reduced Jesus to a milk farmer's tagline. I wish I could find a REALITY or FACT shark eating a Jesus fish... That'd be the best.

Too bad there's no Scientific Method school of fish with one saying Observation, one Question, one Prediction, and one Testing...I went with Science though...the Darwin one is played out.
