Sony to Launch PlayStation 3 in Spring 2006

Monday, May 16, 2005 11:59:20 PM EST

Unrivaled Performance with the Introduction of Cell Processor and Many Advanced Technologies, and Backwards compatible with PlayStation® and PlayStation®2

Los Angeles, CALIF., May 16, 2005 – At a press conference held in Los Angeles, California, today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) revealed the outline of its PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, incorporating the world’s most advanced Cell processor with super computer like power. Prototypes of PS3 will also be showcased at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the world’s largest interactive entertainment exhibition held in Los Angeles, from May 18th to 20th.

PS3 combines state-of-the-art technologies featuring Cell, a processor jointly developed by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba Corporation, graphics processor (RSX) co-developed by NVIDIA Corporation and SCEI, and XDR memory developed by Rambus Inc. It also adopts BD-ROM (Blu-ray Disc ROM) with maximum storage capacity of 54 GB (dual layer) , enabling delivery of entertainment content in full high-definition (HD) quality, under a secure environment made possible through the most advanced copyright protection technology. To match the accelerating convergence of digital consumer electronics and computer technology, PS3 supports high quality display in resolution of 1080p(*) as standard, which is far superior to 720p/1080i.

With an overwhelming computing power of 2 teraflops, entirely new graphical expressions that have never been seen before will become possible. In games, not only will movement of characters and objects be far more refined and realistic, but landscapes and virtual worlds can also be rendered in real-time, thereby elevating the freedom of graphics expression to levels not experienced in the past. Gamers will literally be able to dive into the realistic world seen in large screen movies and experience the excitement in real-time...

And it goes on, check the link.

That boomerang... I mean, controller, looks incredibly uncomfortable. Nice design (though I don't even think it's well designed) does NOT equal good handling, I would expect Sony to know that.

Edit: but many of the games look oh so sweet, at least graphically.

True, but then again, the Gamecube's controllers looked uncomfortable as hell but turned out to be the most confortable out of all three.

And this, my friends, is the rimshot heard 'round the world.
Square Enix is developing software for XBOX360 starting with Final Fantasy XI.

Not that I particularly like Final Fantasy XI, I just think it's interesting to note that after its long relationship with Sony, they're moving on to XBOX.

Not that I enjoy triple-posting, but I had to share this one.

Is this not absolutely stunning?

That controller is soooo not going to be good to play with, hopefully they'll make a dual-shock type controller like they did to mimick the old psx one for the ps2's launch.

As for the games they're previewing for the launch -- just think, these are the first set of games and they already look like this -- I can't wait to see what they develop for the system as the years go by....

One thing that concerns me, however, is these are cutscenes...when do we get to see some actual game footage?

This probably also means they will be heading to Nintendo as well, seeing as they were in relations with them for awhile...

There is a preview that shows Killzone 2 in actual game footage, and it looks amazing, HL2 graphics.

Actual in-game footage here. :)

Actually no. FFXI is the MMOG title of the series. It doesn't surprise me if they develop it for XBox, only brings them more customers. It says nowhere that they're going to bring out new FF titles on the XBox.

I don't know, sounds pretty self explanitory to me. They said *starting* with Final Fantasy XI. Square Enix already has another game coming out for XBOX360. It would only make sense for them to stick with the FF series on the XBOX360.

Microsoft would be absolutely pissed if they made FF games on the PS3.

The first screenshot is probably just a cutscene, so I'm not overly impressed. But the Killzone In-Game is nice. That controller does look uncomformatable though... almost reminds me of some off brand Sega Genesis controllers...

Of course it is. But since when were cutscenes SO detailed that you could see their pores? It looks like a friggin real life picture. :p

I'm still not that impressed.. it's not to hard to do pores, but I'm not saying it's not a great shot. I just wish more of that quality was actually in-game.. o.o

Theoretically, it *could* be done. The only problem is that it would take MANY years to develop. It's not limited by the hardware, it's limited by the game developers.

Honestly, I think it looks more like a batarang.

*sigh* I liked the dual shock.......

Yeah I too want in-game trailers, so I thought Killzone looked awesome.

Controller DOES look uncomfortable though, hope they redesign it.

The controller looks terribly uncomfortable but I'm sure they've run it past product testers. There's no way it can be as uncomfortable as it looks, they wouldn't release something that's going to give you RSI or something in a couple of weeks.

The console looks pretty sweet, it looks like it's about to take off.

Bring on the new GTA!

I don't know, remember the first Xbox controller? That was released.....

Speaking of Microsoft, now that I think about it, the PS3 controller reminds me of an old digital sidewinder gamepad that I used to have. It was terribly uncomfortable too.

I think the ps3 controller looks like a "vibrator"... and that "ingame" screenie, im not too sure if that really is ingame... also, the guy who created final fantasy is working on RPGS for the xbox :)

I'm not entirely sure what "vibrators" look like in your neck of the woods, but I can dig it. :chuckle:

Reminds me more of a croissant.

To me it kinda looks like the klingon batleth :P
And i think that was actual in-game shot there, with killzone. If youve seen the screenshots from the upcoming unreal tournament, youll know its not impossible, and the movie to which a link was posted earlier in this thread shows some killzone, and it looks more in-game than anything. What i mean by that is that you see the back of your gun like in most fps games, the player seems somewhat uncertain what to do, and the environment is reminescent to what the script-ridden medal of honour looked like.

You do know the original Dual Shock Controller had a "Do not insert into body cavities" disclaimer on it, don't you?

I seem also to remember someone from GirlGamer (I think) or something, who, when she purchased Rez and the accompaning "seat vibrator", put it between her thighs and letting her boyfriend play her into an orgasm.

Stranger things have happened.

EDIT: That would have been Game Girl Advance (http://www.gamegirladvance.com/archives/2002/10/26/sex_in_games_rezvibrator.html).

I hope they don't release any frustrating games for the PS3, because that controller's going to snap like a wishbone.

Ah yes, Rez's magic "Trance Vibrator".

I'm downloading the MS and Sony press confrances now, hopefully they'll be done when I get home. Nintendo's should be up tommorow.

I think with all three systems I'm going to wait a few months before the launches before I decide on which one to buy. I'm an old school gamer so I don't care about how the graphics compair. I just want the best gameplay and the best ammount of games. (And the PS2 and GBA won this round for me)

The one thing I like is that the Nintendo Revolution will be able to play all the other Nintendo systems games. I just want to see what the hell the controller will look like.

This week's going to be crazy.

They used the Spiderman movie font on the side of the PS3...

The FFXI thing is cool because currently FFXI is only on PC and PS2, this will allow 3 consoles to play together and there will be less lag since it's all broadband. (friend plays ffxi)
