View Full Version : USS Commission Piece Part 3 (Poll)

Okay..
Please vote in this poll what do you think the USS should do as a group in terms of getting a commission group piece done by the two artist we have chosen.
The poll will be up for about a week (starting today) and please keep all extra chatter and bickering or whatever the hell you call it out of it.
If you want to be included in the piece and you are willing to pay your share, please vote and express why you chose who you chose.
Apparently some folks will get their feelings hurt because they ulimately can't have they way and I'm frankly not going to care either..
That's the way it works..majority rules.
If you are not in the USS, please do not vote in our poll. Thanks.
Make sure you take all things into account about some of us that want to be in the picture, but may not have all the means necessary to afford either of the artists. Also if you are these persons, please take in account those of us that do have the means to afford them and don't make us suffer because you can't.
Nothing personal at all..
I also realized I'm not going to do what I thought about doing..it's not worth it to me.
So let the voting begin..
- SK
:sk:
NOTE: I will look into talking with both artist about getting just a black and white picture done, hoping to not only shave the price down but get our own resident colorist to color it for us. Hopefully it won't be a super issue, but people can be anal about their works of art..
Here are the Pros and Cons of both as I see it..
MMOArt
Pros
Every member gets a large (11x17) group drawing and a color deck of trading cards
Top Quality artwork and color (subjective)
Cons
Long wait time for product with very few previews
High price (subjective)
Guild Helper
Pros
High res electronic version of the artwork
Individual pencils of each character (upgradable to color and detail BG)
Avatar of each character
Costumer input through every stage of production
Quick delivery
Cons
$10 extra for a personal drawing of group
Lesser Quality Artwork (subjective)

I vote for Guild Helper because of the price. (And you can look elsewhere if you need more specific reasons.)
HOWEVER, if it comes down to GH wanting to do the colors and Gill being okay with T!M doing them and he reduces the price because of this, then I'd rather go with Gill, because I love T!M's colors. (Though I'd hope T!M leaves the inks in because I like the inks of both Guild Helper and MMOArt.)

I chose Guild Helper. Not that I don't like Gill's stuff...I love it! It is just the price is more in the range of alot of the members and I don't have anything done by GH myself and would love to have one.

I picked Gil. Although I thought the Gwen Snow art rocks I just think for Gil's price we get more. I would be able to get my own poster that I would bring to have custom framed, I dont see that option with Guild Helper. Also, we don't have a set price with Guild Helper. Depending on background it would cost a minimum of $300, but anything over 5 characters would cost extra, how much extra? I'd be willing to pitch in for other members if necessary.

Plus we each get our own trading cards so we'll all have both the team shot and individual pieces of each of us. And every one of us gets that with Gill, it's unclear with GH whether or not EVERYONE gets a full color poster of the SG, let alone the extras that Gill includes in the price. Not to mention the absolutely superior quality. If I'm gonna spend money on this I say we go for the gold and get the absolute best.
I haven't voted yet.
The only reason we know what Gill's includes is because we asked. No one asked Guild Helper. So I think some further researching is required. I'm going to fish around on his site tonight and get an email or something.

This may help. This is the e-mail I received after ordering Gwendolyn Snow's piece.
Thank you for your order placement for a guildhelper artwork. Before we begin, I like to inform of you of the artwork process that we use here.
First, the most important step..we will communicate with you via email about the type of pose, details and such that you are looking for. we will need large screenshots in bright areas..Details like what she is wearing (ie her bikini top, her figure-skinny? model figure? atheletic? get descriptive..her facial expression..her powers..etc let us know..) We want to capture the essence and personality of the character
Second, guildhelper requires a 50% deposit before any work is to start.
Next, a few pose sketches will be emailed to you for your selection. We'll keep doing this until you find one thats perfect. If you have a certain pose in mind, let us know.
Once the pose is selected, we'll start with the more detailed penciling..We'll email it to you when its done..modification is still available at this point..
Once the detailed penciling is finalized, no more structural modification will take place since inking starts..so when you give us the ok, we will start inking..and coloring shortly after..
At this late stage, we can modify the colors and the shadowing only. Keep in mind that shadowing/light can change the tone or the mood of a picture so we will modify the color until the tone and perfect is acceptable.
Once the artwork is done, we will request the remaining balance and send your print to your address. A high rez file along with all the progression of the art will also be emailed to you..and a hosted avatar of your character if requested..

I voted for Gil, had to be honest, thats just what I prefer. IMO much better quality and value, I agree is not cheap, thats why I want to do it, a solo would be impossible but as a group the price is better. Also, as I said, I am willing to help, but is limited, so for what is worth.

I can't decide, really. If I look at it from a financial point I would go with GH (like that pic of Gwen Snow!). But from a collector's stand point I would go with GB due to the amount of items. Need to think a little more on this. . .

So I'm taking from this:
1)What's a guildhelper starter kit / guildhelper uber team player guide?
2)ONLY ONE POSTER is given for GH, Gill gives posters for EVERYONE, but oooh we all get pencil sketches of our characters...
Full color poster and trading cards for all vs poster for one guy and pencil sketches for the rest of us? :eyebrow:
Eff that, Gill definitely FTW. Just not interested in a "guildhelper starter kit" when I don't use their website for guildhelpering in the first place, we discuss our matters here and we'll be tracking the z-game stuff on guildportal...

Well, I hate to do this but in lieu of this information I have to change my vote. I vote for GP now :shinner: Its just too good of a deal, we all get in #1, we all can get posters # 2, just 10 dollars more. Plus, we can all get an individual character Picture, with the option of upgrading it #3. Oh and we can all afford this one right? I want to see us all in it!
Maybe some of us can still do Gill later if we want. But this now looks like the better alternative for the team. About what, $ 45 per person?
Question is, where do I get the action figures now? :D

Agree, those extras don't really do anything for me, but;
Gill, is what? $75 Per person, and you get Poster and Card.
GP, is what? $45 Per Person, Plus $10 if you want poster = $ 55, and you get Poster, Individual Art that you can upgrade ( I intend to )
Again, all members can do this one, and i'll be willing to help out with the extra $10 for some people if need be so we can all get our posters.

Nay. With Gill you get a full color poster and a deck of trading cards, not just one card.
GH is going to be 10 dollars MORE per person if you want the poster, so if you're gonna spend 55 bucks, you may as well spend 75 bucks and get far better quality out of it

If Guild Helper wins, if those who voted for Gill, will you bail out? And vise versa for those if Gill wins. Because if that's the case then there's no point in us even doing this.

I'm not going to bail. If Gill isn't chosen I'll probably save up some cash and have him do my own personal piece. I just want everyone to do what is best for them and base their decision not what I think or you think (just using you as an example cause I'm replying to you)
I won't bail either way. "How much is that going to cost?" *slorp!* <movie guy voice> "An arm and a leg. "I can deal." ;)

I didn't think I would have to explain this again...but:
Who's arguing? I just said that I don't want in if it's going to be 900. This has nothing to do with how much I have, this has to do with how much I think it's worth. I love Gill's art, but the reason I haven't ever commissioned from him is because I think he overcharges.
Oh, and for the record: I don't want any trading cards. So trying to convince me otherwise with that argument will not work.
Meltman
07-15-2006, 07:04 AM
So...I did some digging on exactly what these cards were...
Hello Meltman,
The group trading cards resemble most comic book or sports trading/collector cards. They’re about 2.5” x 3.5” in size, and are professionally printed on gloss card stock. On the front is a design layout that features artwork of an individual group member, and that member’s name. And on the back is that member’s profile. So each group member will have their own card of just their character, as well as a poster of the group shot.
The art of the member on the front actually will come straight from the group shot. With group orders, although the group design is laid out initially, each member is created individually. This allows for more flexibility in the placement of each member in the group shot, and it also allows for future member additions to the same group shot.
If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate. J
Thanks,
Nakiesha Kindred

But that's alright..
A Few things.. I don't really care about any of the extra stuff that both guys are offering..(The Trading Cards/Avatars) to me that's just more stuff I have to find somewhere to put..
In a perfect world, I would love to have it penciled and then T!M does the final coloring. But I don't know how thrilled the artists would be about that, since it's their business.
I'm voting for Gil, because I think I'll appreciate it more in the long run. I'm a pretty patient person and I'm not in a rush to get anything.
So it looks like Gil Bates is the winner.

I was never in a hurry anyway. We'll just also have to pay more attention to his site.
So I'm asking the rest of you to help me out here.
Thanks. :)

I got a drawing in the works for Coyote already so whenever you all want to do this is fine.

I'm in no rush either. It'll get done when it'll get done.

Wanted to give you all an idea of what we are looking at from Gill since I don't believe any of us have seen a group piece by him as of yet. This is strictly a work in progress and the numbers are to help us find our characters and will not be on the final version.

I'm on it. I just, don't have cool shots of him yet. (He's been in PUG mode since lvl 6)
I know this will not be happening anytime soon but I'm going to have to pull out. Go to Guru poster thread to see reasons if you want to know. I'm sorry :(

By the time we do this, if we do it at all, things might be diferent GAIA, so don't give up hope yet.

I want to do it, but I dont' see it happening anytime soon.. (since we have the Guru poster thing going too)
Perhaps we should rethink it over again anyway..
I think I might commission something my own to share with the collective.
But that'll take time. :)

As you all know, I went ahead and commissioned GH myself for Coyote Storm, but I am more than willing to jump on board for a group piece at a later date.

Like SK said, I don't think this will be done anytime soon, so I think we are good. I hope we just get to do it eventually.

You prolly should go talk about that in the USS Day thread. :)
