View Full Version : Can you make Movie Posters?

This probably belongs down in the art section, but to be honest I need as much traffic on this request as possible, since I want to get the best quality I possibly can.

I take Film as one of my courses for A Level (The level just before going to college for Americans, but I won't bore you with the intricacies of the British School system, suffice to say it's a bag of crap,) and next year I'll be making a short film to enter for my qualification in the subject.

I have the idea basically written, the screenplay in the works and a storyboard to follow. However, I was wondering if there was anybody here who was particularly skilled in making movie-type posters, as I'd like one made for my film project.

Since I have nothing filmed yet, this would just be a teaser poster of sorts, based more on the concept than any filming, since I have none done and basically no one casted yet.

I'm just looking to drum up some interest at the moment, so I'll keep the full details to myself, but here's the basic synopsis so people can begin working up ideas if they'd like to help me out. I'd even love to get multiple posters if enough people are interested.

The film is called 'Snooze,' currently using the tagline "A Window to the Soul," on account of the quote I plan to use at the start - "They say that dreams are the windows of the soul."

Short Synopsis:

The film takes place through the eyes of The Sleeper, a seventeen year old who has drifted into a world made up of his hopes and fears and wants nothing more than to find his way home. In his dream world, he manages to experience everything from playing golf with his estranged, drunken father to stopping time itself; and all this occurs in the time between slamming the snooze button on his alarm clock, and the second alarm five minutes later.

Anybody interested? :)

Totally off topic... but "The Sleeper" reminded me of the premise of the Dream Theater CD "Metropolis Pt. 2" and I was curious if you were familiar with them. The whole album centers around a man who is hypnotised to reveal repressed memories of the lives of 3 other people who lived 200 or something years before him. Never paid a whole lot of attention to the story but the music is AMAZING.

The actual answer to your question is that I could certainly try but I'm not up to snuff with my photoshop skillz.

I like the concept. Well If i get inspired I'll give it a whirl. Any more info/ideas/keywords you want to share, please do so that the brain juice starts flowing. :D

Well if I make something, you want it really high res so as to get a nice print out of it. or you are not planning on printing this?

I've made Movie Posters in the past back when I wrote fanfiction. I might have them on a Disc Somewhere. good posters too. specially the last one I made. If I find them I'll share

I've already come up with some ideas I'll post'em up later.

I wasn't sure what direction do you exactly want to go in with this, so here's a sort of generic, dream-themed poster.
If you want something changed in it, or if you want it to be something completely different (like maybe a poster of an alarm clock?), just holler. :)

Well that's what I had done. Didn't know what was the feel of the movie. Creepy , weird, funny? So I went with this. Don't pay much attention to the fonts I was just playing around.

The feel of the movie will be largely creepy and surreal - Which I feel you've captured very well in that poster, actually, I love how the trees blend into sky.

Could you by any chance make the time on the clock '8:30' ?

I assume you'd need information to fill the blurred section at the bottom with, or just something to replace it with?

"A Craig Mann & Tom Dillow film" could fill that area, if you wanted something to put there.

But yes, I really really like that, and when you settle on a finished version I'd love a high res version of the poster.

Still, anybody else who feels like having a go at this, please go ahead. I really want to use multiple posters. I'm definately going to use both posters posted so far. Great job also to Sheld0n, especially when considering I have a sky shot in the script at the moment :D I may write it out though, I'm starting to think the whole idea is a little too 'Gus Van Sant.'

Great job to both of you guys!

Changed the font a bit. I think it looks better now. Was thinking of adding other images merged like the trees and sky are but didn't know really what to add.

Well, at one point in the film I mentioned that the main character will stop time, this will include people being generally frozen - You could add very vague and blurred figures frozen amongst the trees, if you could make that look good.

Another idea is a blurred, surreal looking figure playing golf in the midst of the woods, although again I don't know how well that'd come off when actually put on the poster, I'm just spouting ideas. This stems from the scene where the main character wakes to find himself in a field where his deadbeat father is playing golf.

Or, yet another random idea, you could have a lone figure (The Sleeper) standing in the middle of the woods facing the 'camera.' The figure would need to be blurred or distorted since I'm not sure who'll be playing him yet. All I know is he'll be wearing a t-shirt and shorts for most of the film, with nothing on his feet. This one would probably be the hardest to pull off since you'd have to find somebody to use there.

I'm a step ahead, Charon. hehe. I was already looking for figures before I read your post. I'll see what I can come up with.

I added a small figure in the back. Tried adding more but I didnt look so well. If I find a better figure, with higher res I'll give it another shot.

I just rented that! It was great - almost as good as Labrynth.

Sorry to derail. Great poster and sounds like my type of movie :D

Yeah I'm in agreement. LOVE the look of the poster, but liked the first font much better. The second one looks too 'watery' if that makes any sense. The first font actually conveys a feeling of sleepiness to me. Just my two cents. :chuckle:

Hey I like that a lot. Maybe using a photo of a clock and replacing the inside part with that tree image could make a nice effect. Anyway I like that. :)

After seeing the two posters side by side, I like the newer font better.

And Got, that is kick ass!

Forgive me for the double post, please. I promise I won't do it for another month. :P

I like this font. Why? I'll tell you.

The font fits the word. We learned this in graphic design. Unfortunately, I forget what it's called. The font reminds me of a dream. Dreams are always depicted as wispy and cloudly looking. The way the word forms itself into that kind of depiction is great. It's driftly, its pulling away from the center of each letter, it looks like it could drift off the margins if it wanted to, and it also looks weary.

I would say go with that one. The other is too bold.

If I may be so bold as to give my completely unsolicited opinion, I not real crazy about either font myself. The title of the movie should be clear enough to read without being too busy. I recommend something like one of these:

Craig.

No one tells me anything... :(

Charon

My name's Craig, but most of my very close friends call me Max. For some reason, my parents decided they wanted to call me by my middle name when I was little instead. So all of my close friends call me Max.

However, most people I meet know me as Craig these days, since I can't be bothered to correct them... So I use that on stuff like this and my writing as not to confuse.

So, in short, you can call me Max. :)

Now - Back on topic.

I can't wait to see Inertial's, Lady Grae's, and personally I love the whispy font on Gollum's.

Oh my. That's great... damn. The jaggy edges throw it off a bit, but the composition is just excellent. I mean this. Wow.

You know, I really, really, really love the general concept. It's actually perfect for what I was going for.

The golfer, the walking through the field... It's all great.

Like Gollum though, I think the jagged lines on the figures and the clock throw it off a bit. Plus, I really want to stick to my tagline and I prefer Gollum's font. But the concept you went for is nothing short of perfect.

The jagged lines were kind of upsetting me lol...cant fix it for some reason...and the clock was last minute...and the walking guy is way too dark I think...

Thanks for being nice to an old lady lol :P

Honestly, if the lines and the clock could be cleaned up, tagline switched out, it'd be nothing short of perfect for what I was thinking.
