I absolutely dig the "Fiction" section of the page. This dead girl looks "hot" (or should I say cool?).

Also there are some neat informations in it, considering the Main Villains, as seen on the grafic on the latest Newsletter:

http://www.coh.com/newsletter/0512/CoHnewsletterMay05_01.jpg - - Scirocco, the Desert Wind ("Destruction Incarnate") - the guy in the center, with the energy sword

- "Captain" Mako, the Shark (Mutant?) - can be easily spotted

- Black Scorpio (Powerarmor wearing brute in the back)

- The Dead Lady, no name present.

Other infos:
Main person: Kalinda the Fortunata, seer
Location: Mercy Island
Enemy Groups/Races: The Snakes, "vicious creatures who look as if they stepped from an ancient nightmare"

That wouldn't be so good. The other thing that confuses me is the assertion that we will have to buy CoV in order to design bases for our CoH supergroups. I guess maybe you don't have a use for bases if you don't have CoV also? But then does that mean every player in a large supergroup has to buy CoV to participate? That doesn't sound nice.

Quite a few people from Cryptic have stated multiple times that you will absolutely NOT have to pay two monthly fees. All you have to do is buy the CoV box and update your pre-existing account or you can create a brand new account with JUST CoV and pay the $15.

Really? Because I recall Gaffer saying...

Exact billing is still TBD (COV is a while off). However, it will -not- be $15 a month for COH and another $15 for COV if you're playing both.

It'd be nice to charge a bit more per month for the COH+COV combo (like the $15+$5 mentioned above) but in practice, if you can only play one character (regardless of it being a hero or villlain) online at a time...but it'd be tough to justify. Our bandwidth or support costs wouldn't go up as long as it's still one player with both games enabled...though it'd be nice to financially support the extra content development needed to be increasing the content of both COH and COV. And we like money. The question is, would we not really just be incentivizing most players to turn off whatever game they were not playing for most of the month...which would be a) annoying to users and b) not make us more money - not exactly win-win.

However, the exact model is TBD - or, if it's decided, I haven't heard the final decision. Thoughts welcome.

Yeah, don't want to pay two different account when you can only play one game at a time (well, kinda, you know what I mean). I wouldn't mind to pay additional 5$ or so for BOTH games, but I think we have to see what the Dev's will come up with.

See, I've heard that, but I think that was just what they WANTED do do, but they were never sure it was fesable. I never took it as a promise or any kind of official stance. Personally, I'd be very surprised if we didn't have to pay more for both accounts, but I don't want to pay double. I'd be willing to pay $5.00 extra, to support both development teams, but that's about it.

Chris

suburbanhell

Yeah I could *live* with a 5 dollar increase but I'm defintiely not paying double. I just had been looking quite forward to paying for one account to play essentially 1 game that would later add a whole other game the size of the original as a giant "expansion".

Akamaz
05-17-2005, 04:45 PM
I also hoped that the Coh/Cov would be a single billing at the same amount, since they're supposed to both be like expansions of the other game (cov is a CoH expansion and vice versa) I dunno about games that hve come out since COH but isn't COH already one of the highest monthly cost MMORPG's out there?

I don't think that's true. $15 a month seems average, but then, I don't play that many of these.

Also, once they announced that CoV was a stand alone game with it's own development team, I stopped seeing it as an expansion. It's a whole different game that's connected to CoH. As I said, I'd be surprised if the price stayed $15 for both games. Happy, but surprised.

This computer animation is extremely gorgeous. They should consider a full length feature. I love seeing signature characters being taken on like that. The thrill and the action level hits you times ten when they're three dimensional like that. And I dig the lady with the fire snakes or whatever. I'd be here minion anyday. Who's the Scrapper-kid?

All I can say is, they had better include most of the CoV costume options in CoH, or the players will revolt. Animal heads and legs alone have been on the request list too long for them not to do that.

As far as the game itself, well, I'm reserving judgement until I can actually play it. I still don't have any desire to be a villian, but if it has a good GM mode I'll be all over that. Additionally it looks like they're going to require you to have CoV if you want to make bases for your hero characters, which I find kind of underhanded, but again I'll have to see the base creation system to determine if it's worth it.

Poison
05-18-2005, 05:33 PM
No, you will be able to build player bases with CoH or CoV only. You will only be able to take part in base raids if you have both.
Edit: found the source.
As far as I know - If you just have CoH you can get a base, BUT if you want to do base RAIDS (you know - the dreaded peeveepee) then you need CoV.

And though I doubt that we will get the CoV costume options, I think CoV will add a lot to CoH, in the costume sense.

Those monsterous animal heads look evil, I doubt that they'd be made available for CoH. BUT... they should introduce less villainous looking animal options for the hero population. Animals (more than just felines) can be heroes too!

Actually, I liked one of the explanations that Marvel Heroes gave for this phenomena.

Even though villains are evil, and have little regard for human life, they still have a grudging connection with their rival heroes. As another superpowered being, a hero, even though he's on the "wrong side", is still one of the few people who can understand what it's like to be superhuman, and have superhuman goals. When the villain triumphs, there is a strong temptation to gloat about it, because the hero can actually understand just how MUCH of a triumph it is. He understands what was involved in that triumph, and how difficult it was.

So there's also a tendency for a supervillain to keep "his favorite hero" around, so he has an adversary who is worthy of him, and can be impressed by his plans. He may also put the hero in a "death trap", to demonstrate his superiority over the hero, because he was defeated, but then give him a chance to get away. He has to earn it, but he gets a second chance to keep you "entertained". Plus, it's a nice insult, since it implies he's not a threat to you.

Of course, in Marvel Heroes it also earned you experience, which is another reason for it. :D

According the Manticore, Foreshadow is a Korean hero that is reincarnated every time he dies with an opposite alignment (IE good, then evil, then back to good, etc.)
My big question... if the Freedom Phalanx is recruiting, WHY WAS'NT I NOTIFIED? How long do us reservists have to suffer in limbo before we get our big shot? Next time, I'm leaving States in that stasis tube Tyrant put him in..... and speaking of States:

********************************************
(Quote from random guy in the official forums)

Zeus' Lightning?

How'd States get a hold of that? Cole ventured "to the far east" and "unlocked his inner will" IIRC.

Which is it Manticore?

---------------------------------------------------------------
(Now a response from Manti)

If you are quoting the website the paragraph actually reads:

Cole claimed to have unlocked the power of his own Inner Will, an obscure explanation at best. Whatever their true origin, it was undeniable that Cole possessed something that hadn't been seen since the age of the Greek Heroes: superpowers.

Note the word *claimed*

Statesman was clearly obfuscating there. As time has passed and he has shown no signs of aging, more questions are being asked. Issue 2 of the comic will give more details about Statesman and Issue 3 will bring the loathesome Lord Recluse's connection into sharp focus.
***********************************************
My computer does'nt seem to want to load the CoH offical forums anymore, but it's in the CoV trailer thread, and I imagine in the Dev's Digest as well

Saw this info posted in regards to SG Bases, enjoy :D

I spent probably am hour or more on the base creator demo at E3. I was impressed.. particularly on how much time we are going to waste creating them. The options are immense, perhaps more so then the costume creator we all know and love. In this version, there were a number of rooms, each labeled for a specific purpose and set in size. They included: Great Hall, Room, several corridors, library, transportation, hospital, laboratory, and vault. From the descriptions, here's about what each one did:

Great Hall: General Meeting room
Room: Just a room only decorations
Corridors: Hallways, what do you think?
Library: A place to do research for skills and inventions
Transportation: For your SG jet... once you own one.
Hospital: For medical equipment, I would assume for respawning during raids. Was marked as a room that could not be teleported into by attackers.
Laboratory: A place to improve skills and make inventions
Vault: A place to store the precious... err.. artifacts and relics acquired by your SG

Every room had a number of options for them. You could add tiers to the floor, either taking them a half step down or a half step up at a time. The ceiling likewise could be raised or lowered. You had a number of texture map options in sets such as mystic, technology, and even sewers. The walls could be set in lower and upper halves. The lowered floors and ceilings could each also have a different look then the main floor or ceiling. Walls could be added in the interior of the room almost anywhere. Oh, and you could adjust the lighting for each tier of the floor. Each of these could be done per room!

As for decorations, there were a large number of them... just about anything you see in a mission! From conference tables, to trash cans, to crates and boxes, or even the CoT teleportation portals. In addition, the special room types even had useful items that could be put in them: Medical stations, power generators, lab equipment, book shelves. Don't worry about them not fitting with you SG theme, they come in many varieties. The library items for instance had electronic book cases, bookcases, and alters for your SG use.

For those interested in raiding, you had a large number of defense items you could put in. Turrets, CoT pain crystals (along with new crystals such as a sleep crystal), and many more! Raiding bases looks like it could be a challenge against a well prepared SG!

I do have a couple movies of them in action, but I won't be able to upload them for a couple days at best.

Or this has to be debated on a sg forum first how the leader should set up the base (with sketches and plans for the "layout" etc.)

Nice thing to look forward to.

@Price model: Rising the price to 20-25$ is ok? you realise that this is nearly the price for 2 seperate accounts? I don't mind a "small" rise in the monthly fee to play both games. But if this rise is higher than 5$ CoV has died for me (or I have to cancel my subscription with CoH)

I have a concern about this. Will it be anyone who has leader status who can set them up or will it be the leader who has the earliest join date as with the coalition chat thingy? Because with my SG, the two people with the earliest join dates are no longer in game. And because they are leaders, they cannot be bumped down or kicked by the other leaders.

OH, and if they expect me to pay another $15 to add CoV to my play account they can also expect me to have to cancel CoH. I CANNOT pay for two games. Unless I get a nice raise at work this fall ...... *laughs hysterically*... like that will ever happen, then no. I can't pay double.

Yeah, what the hell? I might stop playing CoH entierly and play just CoV. Then I'll drop down to just paying for one account (ca 15$), seeing as how I'm only playing one game.
YOu play two games, you pay for two games. Dosn't seem that bad to me. And if the pricing is 25-30$for both games, that's not steep. That's an increase of about 1/3 of the price for having access to twice as much game.

Okay, except that I couldn't play the explansion packs by themselves. When Luclun came out, they introduced a whole new planet, the moon, to play on, but I still needed EQ to play it.

I don't need CoH to play CoV. I don't even have to have ever heard of CoH to play CoV. I can play CoV for ever, never even looking at CoH except in the areas that they cross over. For that matter, let's look at that. There are areas in CoV that are ONLY CoV, and there are areas in CoH that are ONLY CoH. This never happened in an EQ expansion.

Ya know Sable, there's a saying. If you don't have anything new to say, don't say anything at all. This isn't about your hate of the game because they screwed over 40+ Blasters or how your fire/fire blaster is now crap because of it. This is about City of Villians.

Yeah, it's a whole seperate game, because it takes place in a different setting, different gameplay, different everything. Statesman said you don't need COH to play with COV and vice versa.

There are things in COV that are exclusive to that game, and things that share with the other game. I bet there's a free patch that comes out at the release of the game for the COH people.

There are some things Cryptic handles and some things NCSoft handles. When something goes wrong the way thatyou want then make a voice about it and go to the main boards and voice it. Sure, it's a hole of idiots and leeters, but Cryptic sees that forum, not this one. Instead of making complaints here, do it there. Questions are answered there. Changes are suggested and made there.

Hasn't EQ raised it's prices over the years?

This can be looked at in a similar fasion. They are doubling the game content. (More than that, with the CoH/CoV areas.) So, a raise in pricing is too be expected.

That's more servers dedicated to running it, more people to maintain it, and more updates needed to improve both games.

(Unlike EQ, though, if you choose to never go to the updated areas, you can choose to simply not buy CoV. While EQ makes you pay for areas that you may not even use, by raising its price for the entire game.)

And do you want CoH and CoV to act like one game? If that were the case, then the less popular game will probably not get any updates for awhile for periods of time. If you are upset when an update comes out, and doesn't give you anything that you are interested in, what happens if they update CoV, and not CoH? (or vice versa.)

Further, if they give a discount for CoV for owning CoH, then would our CoH price go down also? (Say instead of 15 for each, both drop to 10, which would be 20. A $5 increase, for doubling a games content.)

Though I am not thrilled by that announcement, I do still trust Cryptic and I trust NC as much as I can. They are NOT Blizzard or Sony. NC might be the biggest damn MMOG company, but for whatever reason, they know how to handle their players. Hell, they have the first free, professional MMOG on the market. So if they say 15$+5$, I won't jump with joy, but at least it's better than 15$+15$.
In a nutshell, I'll wait for the definite decision on this.

I'm pretty* sure the additional fee for coh+cov is somewhere between 'zero' and 'not much' Our greed is more than outweighed by our fear of angry fans!

* Note if I'm wrong, it's jack's fault!

Here's the skinny from a redname.

See, this kind of language bugs me. He's not promising anything there. Don't starting holding people to things they are not saying.

And again...He's Cryptic...he has no power.

Unless NCsoft says something, it's just wishful thinking.

Bah my comment was intended as a joke... Redmen of colonial times were framed as people who didn't keep promises .... which of course is slight Bull****

I think it's more positive to say that NO ONE knows anything. To say that there will be an extra charge if you buy both, or to say that there WON'T be an extra charge, would be a lie in either case, since no one knows for sure which it will be.

I think it can be said that Cryptic would VERY MUCH LIKE for you to be able to register for both games at only a small additional fee. And that NCSoft must also weigh the price against whether or not a player will get both games at that price. Although NCSoft is less altruistic here, they are also subject to the market factors, just like any other business.

City of Villains both IS another game, and it ISN'T. It's basically two different games that overlap in some areas. It's more like SWG's Jump To Lightspeed than any EQ expansion.

Umm, it IS a different game. just by the same lines. I think it would be fair to pay an extra $5-$10 for CoV.

Seriously people, maybe it's because I'm spoiled or whatever but is $15 a month that much money?

If it wasn't there's a chance this issue might not bother anyone.

Have you taken into concept the people who use time cards and how that may effect them?

Well, an extra $15 may mean instead of playing CoH and some other MMORPG, you play CoH and CoV. An extra $5, on the other hand, might mean playing CoH, CoV AND another MMORPG. That's exactly what NCSoft needs to weigh. Exactly how much money will be considered "part of CoH", and how much will be "that's enough to pay for another MMORPG... sorry, I'm going to play that one instead."

I notice that yet again, everything has to be an extreme. Either CoV is free, or it doubles the cost. Yet neither alternative is as likely as a compromise between the two. We know that a price WILL be set, the only question is what it will be.

Um, JD, he says right in that post, that $5-$10 isn't that much.

So, he wasn't going on one extreme or the other.

Please read the posts, before commenting on them.

He really didn't, but if he were to say something it'd be something to that affect.
