View Full Version : Maveric's Art Thread

I'm not much of an artist. I can draw decently. Back in 2001, CoH was in developement. While hanging out in the forums, killing time I started playing around with a new program I obtained; Photoshop 7.0. I'm also an avid collector of superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy art. I would take sketch drawings of my favorite superhero pics and photo manipulate them. I would basically color in the sketches and add special effects, usually inspired by a hero of a fellow forum member. I would call these my "maveric" versions of their heroes as I would usually make the heroes similar but different. Alot of my sketches that I photoshopped were from a relatively unknown artist named William Anderson.
My Computer recently crashed several times and I was forced to buy a new one. I lost alot (but not all) of my pics/art. If you have any extra pics of my character from a while back or if you have any pics I have done in the past for others please post them in this thread and or e-mail them to me at maveric@sbcglobal.net .
I'm going to use this thread to show off pics of my main CoH character: Maveric, some alternates, tribute pics, and some art that I photoshopped for others.
If you want me to do some art for you, please don't spam this thread, instead send me a PM instead with some visual references and or descriptions. I'll warn you now, doing art is not a priority in my life, and I won't garauntee(sp?) that I'll even get around to doing it. I usually do tribute pics for people's creative ideas that I'm impressed by, and who don't necessarily ask for it...
Okay first things first...

Here's Maveric's first appearance in CoH back during the Dallas Gaming Convention before Pre-Beta opened up. I had purchased a cheap ass digital camera and was trying to take pics in a hurry in a relatively unlit area... sorry for the fuzziness...

thanks to Elemento, an old CoH pre-beta forum member, for e-mailing the next several series of ealry hero tribute pics that id did way back when.
i will post several of them with some comments.
something you should know when looking at these following pics. you may notice the style of photoshopping graduallyand randomly change in quality for two reasons.
i had just aquired Photoshop 7 and just started self tutoring myself how to use it through trial and error.
the computer i was using at the time had a very old and outdated graphics card and the gamma setting was extremely dark. i normally used a black background for most pics since the forum backgrounds were also black. unfortunately i didn't realize that this camaoflaged alot of obvious coloring errors which didn't become noticeable until a year or two later when i upgraded the computer...
i also thought it was kind but irritating that no one had mentioned alot of the coloring errors and didn't say anything negative about it.
i wish i had the original black and white sketches unfortunately William Anderson doesn't have most of his sketched posted anymore on his website...

i really enjoyed elemento's characters, especially amalgamite. i did the first pic but didn't like how it turned out... used to much opacity on the coloring. the second version i did had a multicolored uniform rather than multicolored skin. i didn't care for either that much but had a hard time finding a good sketch to work with. the second one was a modified ultimate captain america sketch heavily modified.

Captain Avenger... an alternate of mine who never made it into the game.
Capt. Avenger
Alex Avaryman was born a military brat. A term used to reference kids of full-time soldiers, especially those who travel from base to base. The brown eyed boy with brown hair grew into a rather large and very muscular brown eyed Man with brown hair... His father, a command sergeant major in the army, instilled in his son the military code of honor. Although Alex felt too restricted by military life, he had decided that he could show his pride by representing the USA as an Olympian. He spent nearly all of his time either at school or in physical training.
In College, he played and mastered nearly every sport imaginable. Even the complex strategy of chess was no problem for him. His buddies called him "the natural" because in little to no time at all he could learn a game or sport and become exceptionally skilled in it. All this was just preparation for his true goal-- the Olympic Triathalon. After winning gold several times at the Olympics he retired at a very early age.
Alex had lived his dream but was perplexed at what to do with the rest of his life. The Olympics wasn't challenging enough anymore. Military life was too restricting. Alex's life had gone by like a blur, always training. It was his love for America that solved his dilemma. Although he travelled alot, Alex never really had time to enjoy the places he was at. He decided to take an extended American road trip and write an essay about America, it's peoples, subcultures, and habits. Alex became a drifter, learning new trade skills, recording his adventures, learning how to live. During these years he had several adventures usually fighting for the local underdog. It was during this time that he came to eventually made his way to Salutations, Alaska. People appearantly started reporting being abducted by aliens. Alex had heard about this before in other towns but these cases were the most recent. Alex himself was singled out and abducted, but not by aliens...
Commercial break...
The scientist prepared Alex for the last step of his experiment. During the preparation, Alex became conscious unknown to the scientist. The scientist appearantly misjudged the amount of anethesia(sp?) *knock out gas*. Alex awoke prematurely and groggily grappled with the scientist who was reaching for a weapon to subdue Alex. Alex had very little strength and could feel uncounsciousness coming to reclaim him. The scientist desperately grabbed several seringes and stabbed Alex with them. Realing in pain he let go of the scientist who quickly fled away. Mere seconds passed by although it seemed like hours to Alex. Alex's mind, body, and spirit seemed to be --- expanding... If Alex had ever done drugs he would have compared this experience to a really bad LSD trip... He knew that the scientist would be back soon and probably have something deadlier in his posession than seringes... He noticed moonlight coming in from the basement window and staggered to it. Alex fell over and landed on the scientists solid oak desk which exploded into splinters. As Alex got to his feet again he picked up a journal of somekind then crawled out through the basement window. Alex pushed away the snow and got to his feet again. Here he was, nearly naked, standing in the snow, and he felt not even a chill. No time to think. He began running into the dark woods, faster and faster. The trees seemed to blur by, a hundred at a time. Alex accidently ran into and through one very large pine tree which also exploded into splinters and fell over. Alex never felt a thing, he figured the stuff in the seringes was messing with his perception of reality. To Alex it seemed as if he had been running for miles yet he hadn't even broken a sweat. Alex didn't care about that, all he cared about was getting away from the scientist and getting help. As Alex quickly approached a very large fallen tree he jumped over it with very little effort. Unfortunately for Alex, beyond the tree was a cliff that went several hundreds of feet down. As he fell he reached his hand up to the sky wishing that he could grab a cloud. Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion. He knew without a doubt that he was going to die. So Alex closed his eyes and waited for the inevitable...
Commercial break...
Alex immediately awoke to the smell of burning wood in the fireplace and soup on the stove. Alex was lying on the floor in front of the fireplace covered in a large blanket. Alex sat up and blurted out "I'm alive??? ... I am alive... A big burly man at the stove said, "Yes..., you Are alive...". Alex examined the rather large man. He estimated the this Man was about 7' tall and over 300 pounds and resembled a modern day Grizzly Adams. Alex asked the age old question, "Where am I and how did I get here".
Burly Man, "You are in my house and I brought you here, which was no small feat my friend". I set out this morning with my boys to do some hunting." At the mention of boys, several large dogs ran into the room but the Burley Man commanded them to go lay down in the corner. Burly Man, "As I was saying..., The boys and I came across yourself lying half naked, half covered in snow. I removed the snow and noticed something... unnatural. You had no sign of frostbite and your skin was warm to the touch. I tried to wake you but couldn't. I tried to lift you up and damn near gave myself a hernia. I did manage to get one of your arms a few inches off the ground but that was about it. I then grabbed a blanket and some rope off my sled and eventually rolled you onto the blanket... I think you were turning over in your sleep. Anyways, the boys brought you back and that was hard enough for them. I had to walk back on my own. I am not a stupid man and will not tolerate being played a fool. I'm gonna make an educated guess and say that you survived Dr. Niche's experiment somehow and escaped. I'm also guessing that his experiment somehow resulted in your....umm... condition. Oh, please forgive me, my name is Jericho", the big burly man stated as he extended his hand out in friendship.
Alex reached out and gave Jericho a firm handshake nearly breaking every bone in Jericho's hand before quickly letting go. Jericho screamed aloud in pain causing the boys to jump to attention and pounced on Alex. Immediately Jericho commanded then to heel which they instantly obeyed. Alex was stunned, horrified, and confused all at once. Jericho apologied and said that he should have figured that his Strength would have been enhansed. All Alex could do was apologized profusely. Somehow sensing no danger, he decided to trust his instincts and told Jericho of the recent events. Jericho told Alex about the journal he had found laying by his side. Jericho suggested that Alex read the journal for a better understanding of what has happened to him and why.
Commercial break.

Hey Maveric,
Good to see you are still around, sorry to hear you're not playing anymore.
Anyway, a long time ago (IE Back on the old boards) an artist named HBOMB sent me a sketch of Maveric to host when he was having problems with the internet. Not sure if its your character since the character is using a sword, but since you were the only Maveric back on the old boards, I figured its was a good possibility.
It's uncolored and since you were looking for Maveric sketches I thought I would pass it along.
BTW, great drawings as usual! Keep up the good work.
