Changing his name to "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" was an attempt to get out of his crappy record deal. That didn't work because, as the record company argued, it still had 'Prince' in it.

Then he changed his name to the symbol. I can't remember if it worked or not.

The song "Say My Name" on Musicology is a celebration of the fact that he can legally call himself Prince again.
