It's a Dark, Dark, Dark, Dark World
The good people behind Horizons: Empire of Istaria are working on a new MMORPG.
by Daemon Hatfield

May 8, 2006 - Today Tulga Games shed some light on a new MMORPG called Dark World Online.

With a modern setting and a horror theme, Dark World Online gives players the chance to step into the skin of a human, vampire, or werewolf, each with their own skills, abilities, weapons and dwellings. The three factions are in the middle of an intense rivalry, fighting for control of their fantasy world.

With support for both player vs. player (PvP) and player vs. environment (PvE) gameplay, Tulga has both the popular gamers and the lonely hearts taken care of. Stay tuned to IGN for more details.

I have a few concepts for MMORPGs in my head that I mull around often, three or four at any given moment usually. This is one of them. The horror genre is one that online games have left virtually untapped and I've been aching for a good one to be made for a long time, the fact that this is in a modern setting is just icing on the cake.

I'm guessing it's going to be a long time before this comes out, but who knows maybe it will actually turn out good.

This is actually the first MMORPG besides COH that sounds like it would interest me. I'm looking forward to hearing more about it.

Ooh, werewolves!

I wonder what they'll offer as far as "Archetypes" though.

I can see all the goth heads going to fill the vamps all up. I guess that means more for the wolves to take down. =P

I would so look into this. As long as it doesn't suck. I rememebr liking the idea of Autowars(or whatever) and then it sucked arse. So lets pray this doesn't.

Let's not forget the humans either. I wonder how many aspiring Van Helsings, Belmont family members, Peter Vincents, Society of Leopold zealots and Hunter: The Reckoning refugees are going to crop up and ruin everyone else's day...I mean, night. :D

You'll have to contend with the furries for the Werewolf slots, of course.

Furries vs. Goths! Battle of the Internet Subcultures!

This definately sounds like it could be fun....your post reminds me of something Widdy, i'd planned on making a dark armor stalker/scrapper who was a member of the Belmont family that didn't quite do the job that well...

They've got their website up already, http://www.darkworldonline.com (http://www.darkworldonline.com/index.php) along with a FAQ page (http://www.darkworldonline.com/faq.php) which answers some basic questions. Also they have a newsletter sign-up but it appears to be broke at the moment, for me at least.

You know, when I saw this I instantly thought of you Widdy, how you used to write extensively about Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Figured you would be interested... But anyway, I'm psyched!

A Bullwhip/Devices Scrapper would be pretty nice, eh? :D

And yes, Mike, I'm about as interested as they come. I remember tearing my hair out when I couldn't get the Underworld mod for Half-Life to work. Let's just hope this MMOG works out.

Hmmmm wonder if they'll get world input. Between Hamilton's first 8 Anita Blake books, Kelly Armstrong's otherworld series, a little Harry Dreasden and Kim Hendersons' "Dead Witch Walking" there are a lot of great "Urban" horror settings.

Blakes last 5 books....thats a different game :)

(Yes I read horror romance, an ex SG friend with a good reading list recommended a couple and now I'm hooked. Werewolfs, Mystery, and sex....great pool side reading)

Oh and I hope they look at Bureau 13 or Operation Twilight. Or something like that. Oh i could so see some kind of Church Powers or Government contact for the humans. Yeah, this one does look cool. I am very looking forward to this coming to a head.

Good to see another horror mmog in production... although this one seems to come awfully close to the White Wolf World of Darkness IP, so perhaps White Wolf will try to sue it out of existance before it gets released.

Anyway, I'll keep an ear out for info on this as well as on Exanimus, the zombie mmog.

That sucker is doomed before one line of code is written. It's done by the same team that did Horizons, and that game BLEW.

A month after I quit I an email from the devs asking for me to come back along with a LONG list of the game fixes and tweaks they had done.

Then two months later I got the 'buy 1 month, get one month free' offer.

Just recently I got the 'reup and get 14 days free' bit.

I wouldn't get hopes up for this one just yet.

Then again, they also tried to sue Underworld, and look how that turned out...

Not exactly. Horizons sucked because of one man: David Bowman. I don't think DB's behind this game. Besides that, Tulga Games DID NOT develop Horizons in the literal sense. They bought out the remnants of Artifact Entertainment when AE was in bankruptcy, after they had to release damn near 75% of the development staff because they couldn't afford to pay them.

The concept sounds nice and it's always good to see new ideas brought to the MMO space. I just hope this game actually sees the light of day.

True, but a movie studio probably has a different view of such legal action than an independent game development studio. I don't know if Tulga would have the capital to even think about fighting a legal challenge and so may make changes (self-censor, if you will) to avoid such a thing happening.

But they'd be sued by...a game development studio.

I guess it would come down to how much money White Wolf wanted to spend vs how much Tulga thought they'd lose.

If it goes this way.

Ah, excellent! I was getting worried about that site not coming up and Tulga's not saying a word about it.

I still can't sign up for the newsletter though... Strange.
