The man the rest of the Defenders of Paragon knew simply as the Modern Samurai leaned back from the videophone terminal in the Defenders' base. He had called his parents to pass along the news that he'd been tapped as a full member of the Defenders, and that somehow he'd developed the ability to run and jump a lot faster than he had any right to, and they explained some things to him that, quite simply, explained everything but changed the way he thouhgt about himself and the world around him.
He had apparently come from a time about 2000 years in the future, and another world entirely. In his home time, genetic engineering in order to help humans adapt to differing environments had become the norm, and he hailed from a planet with gravity significantly higher than Earth's. So when he was in an Earth-normal one-gee field, he was faster, stronger, and could jump higher. With training, he'd be able to develop these abilities farther.
That wasn't all. His katana, which he'd been under the impression was a blade his father had bought, turned out to be the last remaining shard of their ship's hull. It was made of a material called "battle steel", and between the extreme sharpness of the blade and the density of the material - capable of standing against the weapons of 2000 years in the future - it could cut through almost anything.
All this was a bit much for him to take in immediatley, and so the Modern Samurai leaned back and removed his sunglasses to rub the bridge of his nose as he considered all the ramifications.
