simple enough question, do we want CoHguru.com listed on the main boards as a fansite?
It looks like a good idea to do so , as it would possibly help out for folks looking to join a good community, however, it also looks like we may need to make some changes to allow this.. below is the TOS for being listed on CoH.com as an official fansite...
CITY OF HEROES FAN SITE AGREEMENT
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: THIS FAN SITE USER LICENSE (“LICENSE”) IS A LEGAL AND BINDING AGREEMENT BETWEEN YOU AND/OR YOUR ORGANIZATION (“YOU”), AND NC INTERACTIVE, INC., ITS SUBSIDIARIES, AFFILIATES, AND LICENSORS (COLLECTIVELY, “NCSOFT”). BY INDICATING YOUR ACCEPTANCE, YOU ACCEPT ALL THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT. YOUR USE OF ANY GAME MATERIALS AND YOUR DEVELOPMENT AND PROVISION OF A FAN SITE ARE SUBJECT TO THIS AGREEMENT.
Subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement, NCsoft grants you the revocable permission to create a City of Heroes Fan Site that is related to promoting the online game currently entitled “City of Heroes” (the “Game”), solely for your personal noncommercial use on a Fan Site. Fan Site” shall mean a personal, noncommercial web site, created by you, that is freely accessible to the public and dedicated to promoting the Game. This license allows you to reference the Game, conduct electronic correspondence with players of the Game, and in general, reference the ideas, experiences, and characters contained in the Game. In addition, you may capture graphics, logos, art, and the characters’ likenesses (the “Materials”) for use only on your Fan Site. Use of any NCsoft trademarks shall be in strict accordance with NCsoft’s trademark usage guidelines. If you post Materials on your Fan Site, you must also post the following notice on your Fan Site on the same web page(s) as any of the Materials: “City of Heroes game content and materials are trademarks and copyrights of NCsoft Corporation and its Licensors and used with permission. All rights reserved.” You will not represent that your Fan Site is endorsed or approved by NCsoft or that any content on your Fan Site is endorsed or approved by NCsoft. Your participation in creating a City of Heroes Fan Site is purely voluntary. You acknowledge and agree that you will not receive any compensation of any kind from NCsoft for your City of Heroes Fan Site or for your participation as a City of Heroes Fan Site provider. You acknowledge that you may stop providing content for your City of Heroes Fan Site at any time that you desire. You agree to provide NCsoft with the web address of your Fan Site so that NCsoft may inspect your site and verify compliance with this Agreement from time-to-time.
NCsoft and its licensors own all of the right, title and interest in and to the Game. Your right to reference the Game is limited to the license grant above, and you may not otherwise copy, display, perform, publish, or use any of the Game elements. You may not modify, reverse engineer, disassemble, create derivative works from, license, transfer, distribute, or sell any materials from the Game, or use the Game to further any commercial or unlawful purpose. Without limiting the foregoing, you may not use your references to the Game to sell advertising, to promote another product or business, or on any site that operates or promotes a server emulator. You may not make materials from the Game available by download from your City of Heroes Fan Site (without prior written permission of NCsoft).
NCsoft retains the right, at NCsoft’s sole discretion, to terminate and revoke this Agreement and all rights to the licensed Materials and the Game at any time, for any reason. You shall not put any inappropriate materials on the Fan Site. Some materials that NCsoft considers inappropriate for a City of Heroes Fan Site include, but shall not be limited to:
A. Hate material, including without limitation, defamatory, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive imagery, content or language;
B. Pornography or obscene or indecent material;
C. Overt Propaganda; The site cannot have an obvious political agenda, or one that has blatant messaging of slogans and attacks on religions, ethnic groups, or personalities, or that would otherwise tarnish NCsoft’s reputation. NCsoft will not link into sites that deliberately exclude large portions of the potential audience.
D. Commercial sites. Selling banner ads or offering personal creative materials is permitted. However, commercial sites whose sole and/or primary reason for existing is to serve as a marketing vehicle for a company or product shall not be permitted.
E. Use of unauthorized copyrighted materials (without prior permission from the owner of such material).
When your City of Heroes Fan Site interacts with players in the Game, please adhere to the following guidelines:
Never ask for a player’s personal password or username.
Never ask for a player’s credit card information.
Never pretend you are a paid employee of the game, and never ask to meet players in person.
Do not make any material available for download or distribution that you know (or should know) contains any computer virus of any kind.
You represent and warrant that (a) you have the right and ability to enter into this Agreement, (b) you will not, and the use of the Fan Site will not, infringe or misappropriate the intellectual property rights of NCsoft or any third party, (c) the Fan Site will not misrepresent the Game or tarnish the reputation or goodwill of NCsoft, and (d) you will comply with the Federal COPPA standards for websites directed to children under the age of thirteen (13). Information about COPPA and requirements for compliance can be found on the FTC website at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/kidzprivacy/index.html . You agree to indemnify and hold harmless NCsoft for any claims related to your Fan Site or breach of the foregoing representations and warranties. ALL MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED TO YOU BY NCSOFT “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. NCSOFT SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, OR INDIRECT DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION LOST PROFITS, EVEN IF NCSOFT KNEW OR SHOULD HAVE KNOWN OF SUCH POTENTIAL LIABILITY.
You must be at least 18 years old to accept this Agreement. This License is governed by Texas law (without regard to conflicts of law), and is the entire agreement between NCsoft and you regarding the subject matter herein.
now I dunno about how this reads, but from the sounds of things they might be saying without this license agreement, we can't legally have this forums setup, but as highlighted in red above, if we did this we'd have to get rid of; The Jiggly Thread, the Game Mods section, anything posted by Esbat, and would also have to put a discvlaimer on the bottom of each page that says "We do not represent that This Fan Site is endorsed or approved by NCsoft or that any content on this Fan Site is endorsed or approved by NCsoft."
and this is why i'm posting this here, because we need to make a decision about this.

I know from experience that being an "official" representative, and having to police the "adult" content of the site, especially once you've established yourself as being more lenient, can be extremely difficult. I'd say no unless there is a really big advantage to it. We all know where we are, I think word gets around well enough. :D

Chalk me in as "Undecided."
On one hand, reaching out to the main site would net us all the good, talented or deep-thinking people who are tired or frustrated with the main site yet need the community and see no place else to go. These people are usually identified as the folks saddled with a one- or two-star rating, the decent guys who get slam-dunked by the buttheads for not having trendy, popular or conformative opinions. Like us, these are the burn-outs and nerds standing around at the big, overgrown clique party that is the Great Godly Official OMG COME TALK TO STATESMAN!!!11 Forums. And we could always use more of us.
On the other hand, we'd also get all the greasy, juvenile buttheads and malcontents who do toss out one-star ratings like Halloween candy and will grief you to hell if you offer even the slightest suggestion that their favorite build/game feature/comic book series/boy band/political party sucks.
So, yeah. Undecided. I'm open to information which might be used to correct this.
The plethora of asshats and bagblisters that would throng to these hallowed pages would be loathsome in the extreme.

While I can certainly appreciate wanting more members here, if Cryptic were to consider sanctionning cohguru as an 'officially acceptable' site, they'd only do so if a number of changes to content were agreed to. For example, the 'CoH Game Mods' section would probably have to be deleted entirely.

To be honest I don't think the jiggly thread is that big of a deal. Section B ("Pornography or obscene or indecent material") does not cover the Jiggly thread at all. Everything at best there is PG-13 rated. (If not it shouldn't be there)
It's the 'never ask to meet players in person' bit that concerns me - however this is purely from an adsministrative perspective. So far the meetups have been organised by the players for the players with the site administration having no involvement in setting it up. (Participating is another matter entirely.)
I'll get in touch with Aura regarding the modding section. I doubt it'll be an issue.

So, I know that the members of this site don't own it, but I thought the reason for moving to guru from ogaming was to get away from corporations telling us what we can and can't do? Although I'm not really concerned about the Jiggly's thread  , I really don't like the idea of a huge increase in traffic on these boards either... I actually found Pcity form the official fan site lists of the main board. I don't think that anything on this board will change, and there will be no "flood" of new v isitors. Most people are happy with the official boards, they don't need a secondary message board.

Okay, I just have one question. Once the official fansite designation is given, is there a plan in place to deal with the obvious increased bandwidth costs? Once word gets out about this site, I expect the hits to skyrocket like the Dow during the dot-com boom period. That's one possible downside to popularity in today's age of fansites. Will the site become community supported in that case (ala The Safehouse and Graffe's among the EverQuest fansites)?
I don't think the asshats and ballblisters would be as much of a problem as the cost they run up with their asshattery (asshaberdashery?).

It hasn't, but being listed here (http://www.cityofheroes.com/community/fansites_info.html), and under the scrutiny of the Cryptic nazis, will.
Although the poll wasn't started by an 'officer' of this forum, it does reflect the feelings of those who have an opinion on the subject.
I am unimpressed by statements posted by the 'officers' of this forum that go against the wishes of the majority of those that have an opinion on this topic, as clearly illustrated by the poll results and subsequent posts.

We have always been "under the scrutiny of the Cryptic nazis" - and it never has affected us. We have always been an official fansite and it never has affected us. If it ever did then we'd cut all ties from being 'official'. But that's never been the case and I severely doubt it ever will be. Granted we may not have asked to be put up on that list (no idea why) but we have ALWAYS complied with the rules presented by Cryptic. Which, ultimately, are just the forum rules we've always had (read: common sense) here ANYWAY.
I am fully intending to recreate this thread with all of the facts presented BvS. We will see how 'the majority' (despite 34 'no' votes being 3.995% of the people that actually post here) vote once they actually know the situation at hand. As it stands now - I am sure most voters were put off by the false information presented in the first post.
If anyone can present a logical reason as to why becomming an 'official fansite' is a bad idea I would like them to speak up. Do we want to:
-Promote Hate material, such as racism?
-Promote pornography, or explicitely indecent material?
-Promote a single political agenda?
-Soley exist to sell our own products or the products of others?
-Promote the explicit use of copywritten material?
If you've answered 'yes' to any of the above could you please respond below explaining why, or contact me via PM explaining why. As these are the only things the "Cryptic nazis" will stop you from doing.
I am fully intending to recreate this thread with all of the facts presented BvS. We will see how 'the majority' (despite 34 'no' votes being 3.995% of the people that actually post here) vote once they actually know the situation at hand. Please be sure to include independantly verifiable sources for the facts you intend to present.

They will stop game modding, as is clearly supported by those that set up new forum sections.

There ya go BvS. I found this quote very interesting:
"You will not represent that your Fan Site is endorsed or approved by NCsoft or that any content on your Fan Site is endorsed or approved by NCsoft."
I can really empathise with the CoH moderators over at the official forums now. It seems whenever you do something (or just continue as normal as is the case here) there are always those unhappy with the current state of things.

Umm... If 34 votes is 3.995% of the people that actually post... The number of people that actually post would be around 800 or so. If my calculations are correct. O_o

Staying out of this. Don't intend to side with CoHGuru or the Community.

A little further down:
"You may not modify, reverse engineer, disassemble, create derivative works from, license, transfer, distribute, or sell any materials from the Game, or use the Game to further any commercial or unlawful purpose."
The game mods section will definitely draw their attention.
Cover your backsides.

Mahaf: it was 13% - my calculations were incorrect.
Charon: I'm siding with neither - merely presenting the facts as they are. I am remaining completely impartial.
BvS: We are only allowing the discussion of in-game mods. You may have noted we are not hosting any on our site, or producing any on behalf of CoHGuru. There is not a moderator of that section - and the instructions on how to create said mods has never been posted. The mod section will therefore remain untarnished by the 'Cryptic nazis'.

Hehe, didn't mean to make you look stupid or anything, just 4% seemed incredibly low to me. :P
EDIT- Actually, at first I thought I was crazy, and that I had been missing 50% of the people's post or something. ;)

Wait, if we're only supposed to talk about mods, then why are there links to downloads of mod patches in the mod forum? :eyebrow:

Okay, I'd suggest we let Xan clarify things, like what are we alloed to have and what not. I don't think NC will have watchdogs on every site, demanding specific threads to be closed or similar. And I'm not sure about the mod thing either (heck, I have a hacked demo gif avatar at the official board).
Then I'd suggest we make a new poll where Xan clearly states the pros and cons and we vote anew. No, we won't get more than 50 votes, no matter how many registered. That's just how it is. I remember back at the pre-beta, of 20k registered users, there were like 200 actively posting, that's 1%.

Sorry about the first posting Xan, i wan't trying to make this a "bad" thing to be listed, as a matter of fact, I voted "Yes" I like the idea of new blood here, after all, the main "official" forums was how I found my way to Pcity.com to begin with.
I was just pointing out some concerns about the jigglies maybe causeing some issues, that's all.
I doubt that we'l get too many trolls or viagra ads coming up if we sign up there, plus it'd be a good boost to the community, after all, it's not www.CoHelite.com (don't bother clicking, it's not a real site)or anything like that, where we require you list the member who invited you at the semi monthly meetings where we perform dark rites or anything.
so, like i said, sorry if my first post seemed like I was against this, and now back to your regularly scheduled dooming

Alrighty then, I can see Xan's point, I mean, he's one of the founders of this here site, and highly active on the main boards, so it's not unexpected.
If the moderation shields can hold up, then warp speed Mr. Poison!
Oh no! Klingons on the poop deck!
what? It's a nautical term.... :waiting:
NCSoft and Cryptic will never dedicate anything that goes on this forum (and site). So why the fuss?
The legalese you brought in is just something to save their hide's in case of legal troubles. A lot of game companies have such strict rules - never have I ever seen a single game company enforce it.
Being listed as a fansite will not only bring in trolls (which we will easily smack), but also grow our community.
Its much ado about nothing.

I voted yes, and if we have to vote again, I'll vote yes again. I see no real downside to this.
The excuses I've seen:
"CoHGuru.com will become blocked from school!" -- Good. Do your schoolwork at school, save the message boards for your spare time.
"Cryptic won't like the Game Mod forum!" -- I believe Xanatos addressed this one adequately already. But further still, the reality is Cryptic doesn't have the time nor resources to go police and scrutinize each and every single fansite board posting. They don't even have the manpower to program promised gameplay features, so I'm really not worried about this.
"We'll lose the Jiggly thread!" -- Even if by some chance that does happen, I'm prepared to let it go. If it's that important to you, you probably should go find some real porn somewhere else anyway.
In the end, the amount of good people that will find our site and contribute will far outweigh the "asshats and bagblisters" who will just get suspended/banned anyway.
"CoHGuru.com will become blocked from school!"
Just wanted to add - if cohguru.com does become blocked, it will have nothing to do with coh.com linking to us (or not linking to us).

First you mock my run on sentences and now you mock my jiggly thread... have you no soul, no compassion, no libido worth maintaining via the indescribable necessity -- nay, urge of the red-blooded male american to endorse his right to free jiggl -- err, speech? What say you?
Oh and... uhh... being an official site kept me from selling my Esbavision goggles that let you see through... stuff. :P

Don't get me wrong. I like the Jiggly thread as much as the next guy. But I see it as an acceptable loss if it helps grow and improve the community.
That is, of course, assuming we have to sacrifice it at all... which I don't think we would anyway.

Do you have a mega of your char? (If not, ask Quake for one) Then go to the Competition! Thread and ask for your mega to be added. Simple.
