This is the game for everyone who says that the best part of CoH is the character creator. :p
To be honest, Spore is one of the few games I'm really hyped up about these days.

The end space game doesn't look too interesting to me, the evolution seems the coolest.

End game? There's doesn't seem to be a real end game, everything keeps evolving, options are just added.

Yea.. I was going to say the same thing, that the space didn't look fun. Apparently though.. you can go back in and do evolution still, which.. I will be doing alot.

I, for one, am really looking forward to setting up a space station that orbits around a black hole. :p
I think this whole Alpha Centauri deal might be pretty interesting if they do it right. But yeah, fortunately, you never really outlevel the evolution aspect of the game.
I just wish there was a little more direct form of multiplayer, or at least the ability to make contact with a specific player's civilization.

Hopefully games go slower than that, I don't want to go through evolution in 30 minutes so i can meet another species... Though a continual week by week game would be nice. :)

I would buy this game just for the animal creator.
The amount of customization in this thing is incredible. I just hope that the actual game stays as detailed as this looks.
I wonder when it's suppose to come out though. Some sites say by the end of 2006, and others into 2007.

Wow. Looks fun, but there are a few points...
First, I wonder how much of the neat littles goodies that were demonstrated will actually make it to general release?
Second, he kept emphasizing how much your creatures/cities/vehicles etc... would be interacting with other players' creatures/cities/vehicles etc... This sounds like a formula for the usual "gankstravaganza" that one finds when dealing with games that allow player interaction. Sorry if that is overly pessimistic, but when you include "other players" in the game design, then the "asshole factor" should be considered as well.(side note: even Mr. Wright engaged in a bit of dickery in that vid when he destroyed that other planet.... THAT will be much more common than he realizes methinks.)
Third, I like what Maxis has put out in the past, so maybe this will work after all. We'll see.
Akamaz
03-05-2006, 01:29 PM
actually Sal, there is no contact between players. all that is taken is data about the populus (how they look and a general "how they act" feel)
MikeKAY
03-05-2006, 01:39 PM
Yeah, it just takes other player's creations and slaps some AI (intended to mimic the player?) on them and lets you interact with them. Tisn't an MMO or anything like that.
Malibu Sally
03-05-2006, 02:46 PM
Ok, that sounds a little better. Now to see when the release is and how much it will deviate from the demo.... AND if you need some 5000 dollar mega-machine to even consider playing.

Well, that remains to be seen. What is sure, however, is that the game will be absolutely enormous, and it will most likely fit on a single CD. All that and more, thanks to their use of procedural programming.
If you want a sample of what that means, here's a demo (http://kk.kema.at/files/kkrieger-beta.zip) made using procedural programming. It's less than 100kilos and it looks like it was at least 200 megs (in other words 204 800 kilos).
As for the video in the original post, here's the full presentation (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-262774490184348066&q=spore). It's half an hour longer and it doesn't show any more game footage, but it does explain some stuff and it's pretty damn funny, so it might be worth your while. :)

One thing I did wonder about this is if it wouldn't be subject to a degree of natural selection in itself. Say you create a completely impractical and goofy critter that resembles a gopher with a snork. Well what happens when the computer downloads the xenolibrary of Player X, who only creates voracious armored beasts with laser eyes and enormous adamantium teeth? Maybe not a problem at the lower levels, but when you get to the galaxy level, is it going to be all Alien vs. Predator ad nauseum?
Probably not, but it would be a really funny possibility.

03-06-2006, 10:17 PM
Well, apparently the creatures the game selects for you depend on the way your own race is, so I'm guessing it's something like an automatic difficulty setting.
What interests me, though, is what happens when all your natural weapons become useless once they get replaced with brainpower and tools.
I imagine it will be possible to make a creature that's a very sucessful animal, but a horrible sentient being...

I saw a tech demo of this Last year. I have been a long time buyer of Maxis made products and spent many a late night with my brother playing sim city 2000. From what I have heard, this game WILL be online as your little people can then traverse the known universe (internet) and land on other planets and either take over that planet or such.
A very promising game and Will Wright still is a god among geeks and gamers alike.

From what I have heard, this game WILL be online as your little people can then traverse the known universe (internet) and land on other planets and either take over that planet or such.
Well, it's been said that all the game will do is copy other people's races into your computer and what you do with them won't affect anyone else's experience (ie. you could destroy someone's planet in your game and it will still exist on theirs). So there will be no actual direct interaction.
You mean like on that one planet, I think it's called Earth...
Hahah
But what I actually meant is that for example a very vicious species that used to be unstoppable in nature learns to use tools and stops acting like an animal, but turns out to be stupid. Then, this species could be completely obliterated by, say, a bunch of herbavores that happen to be more intelligent.
I think the game might be very interesting at that point.
Also, I'm wondering if it will be possible to make a species that will never have left water, like the merfolk...

I'd be willing to put down cash bets that there will be. They've already got the ability to make cities underwater with a bubble. I imagine taking it the rest of the way is just a matter of multiplying a few values by -1.

Then again, this site (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/spore/news.html?sid=6148314) lists the release date as far away as Feb '07. It also looks like there may be a budding Spore community site located over at http://www.xspore.com/ for those who are interested.

The release date has been speculated to be anywhere from late 2006, to any time in 2007.
Next week should be exciting though, because it's supposed to be shown more at E3.
