View Full Version : My Chemical Romance is not My Bloody Valentine

Esoteric musical rant. My Chemical Romance is a mediocre pop band. They're not awful, but they're not that good either. Also, they've got this annoying makeupy goth thing going.
My Bloody Valentine is an Irish indy rock band who were one of the seminal musical groups of the 90's. For example:

My Bloody Valentine is complex, hard-driving and thoughtful all at once. My Chemical Romance is simplistic and somewhat vapid. Just because they both have stupid names is no reason for people to get them confused.

White Stripes are fine, but I dislike Get Behind Me Satan, except for Blue Orchid.

You are right about that.
White Stripes > Modest Mouse > Franz Ferdinand > My Chemical Romance

Every single piece of music that has been put out in the last 5 years simply blows.

Arcade Fire-Funeral
The Shins-Chutes Too Narrow
Common-Be
Death Cab for Cutie-Transatlanticism
Iron & Wine-Our Endless Numbered Days
Josh Rouse-1972
Matisyahu-Anything (not an album title)
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists-Tell Balgeary, Balgury is Dead or Shake the Sheets
And that's just the stuff that I personally have bought and don't consider too weird for the general public. The new New Pornographers is supposed to be amazing as well.

*choke*
Let's see - California came out in 1999. Since then:
- he started up the Ipecac Recordings label, which has releasedquite a few albums (http://www.ipecac.com/discography.php)
- He started Fantomas, which has released four albums (Fantomas, The Director's Cut, Delerium Cordia and Suspended Animation)
- He started Tomahawk, which have released two albums (Tomahawk and Mit Gas) with another one due this year
- He's been the main vocalist on Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By, helmed by Nathaniel Merriweather aka Dan the Automator, and also did a track for the Handsome Boy Modelling School album, White People
- He was on two tracks on Bjork's album Medulla
- He teamed up with the X-Ecutioners for General Patton vs the X-Ecutioners
- His next major project is Peeping Tom, of which he's apparently got three albums recorded, the first due out May 30
- He's been touring with various bands; I've seen Tomahawk twice and Fantomas twice since 1999 (and I live in Australia)
And the above is just the stuff I knew off-hand. Looking at his wiki entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Patton) I'm reminded he acted in lead roles for "Firecracker" and found out he's doing some music for the upcoming Rockstar game Bully. Plus, you can see the number of albums he's done guest spots, vocals and anything else he's done recently.
So, yeah, I'd say he's put a few things out since then. ;-)
I'm also not so one-eyed as to say everything he does is good, but he is prolific and, on the balance, interesting.
