I'm really astounded there hasn't been some sort of Stargate video game, crappy or otherwise. And yeah, that setting is perfect for an MMO.

Well, there is work going on right now on a FPS game, but word on the 'net is it sucks.

The FPS was canceled last I heard.
I heard about the MMO this morning, I'm hoping that it comes out good. The setting is perfect.

Wow, they've got some names working on that.
Joe Ybarra, Chris Klug, and Stu Rose are pretty big.
But the all-important question I'll be looking to find out is: who's bankrolling them?
I'll put this on my game tracker list for sure though.

There was a Stargate game at one point. I think it was for the SNES... I don't recall it getting good reviews, either...

There were a few Stargate games. The one on the SNES was an action game and there was a puzzle game on the Sega Game Gear. They even made a Stargate Pinball Machine too. I rented the SNES one, it was pretty good, kinda like a movie version of Contra.
I loved Stargate the movie, but I never got into any of the television shows. I'm sure they could make a good MMO out of it with all the diiferent worlds you can visit.

Sounds fun, if they can pull it off...

The whole entire Stargate series is originally based on a book written by Pauline Gedge. I wonder if she will be doing anything with this or any of the screenplay writers from the show.
A sequel book was written by another author but I forgot who that was.
Interplay came out some time ago with a computer game based on Stargate called 'SANDWARRIORS'
It was a FPS much like X-Com's Interceptor.

The Snes Stargate Game was kick a$$.
Your standard platformer of the day but still alot of fun.
Flying a Death Glider was definately the highlight for myself.
Think of it as Super Star Wars with slight difference in graphics.
Honestly, with how popular the show is, I'm surprised there hasn't been any more. Even Dune got a rts game. A shooter simular to Star Trek Elite Force could be good. An mmo version would just be stupid, especially since the system lords are already dead. Seriously, what would you do out side of shoot at the locals?

Just because the System Lords are no longer around in the current season doesn't mean the MMO has to be set in that time period. Look at SWG. They set it during the rebellion, which is over as of RotJ.
Besides, there's the Ori now. They make a pretty bad-ass baddy.

I'd love to see this...but I have no idea how they'd pull it off aside from having a very similar setup to something like Guild Wars...

Arise, o thread!
Okay, so update on this. I was at the Stargate Worlds panel yesterday at Comic Con.
It started off with a video of the game so far, which looked pretty impressive. The graphics were nice, if not super realistic. But, I'm also not a fan of super-realistic graphics in my video games, so I'm okay with that. Most of the game play they showed was combat, which looked pretty exciting, and real time, kinda like an FPS. Lots of crouching behind cover and popping up to shoot at your opponent. Some varitation on uniform, too. I saw the standard green uniform with the black flack vest, the desert uniform, and an orange uniform with a white stripe behind it. Weapons I saw being used were the standard P-90, a flame thrower, rocket launcher and a Jafa staff weapon. Overall, it looked very cool and exciting.
On game play, they stated that they "classes" or character types in the game (it was unclear on if it would be a class system or not, but I imagine it would from the way they were talking) would be based off the original SG-1 team. This means you could play a scientist like Sam Carter, a Jafa warrior, a soldier or an archaeologist, like Daniel. I'm not sure if that's all that will be available, but that's what they listed at the panel. They emphasised that combat would NOT be all that you can do. They instituted a "mini-game" idea into the games so that the scientists and archaeologists would have things to do in the missions, things that they were uniquely qualified to do. Mini-games included puzzles and games in the vein of Bejewled. This was the only example they gave, but in the video we saw one where someone was playing around with wires to open a door (it looked like).
PvP will be in the game, but initially it will be in the form of training missions, or a Jafa civil war. They want to make the universe consistent, so that the PvP has a reason for existing in game, as opposed to just being a game element. It sounded from the way they were talking that you will only be allowed to play SGC members, so no playing the bad guys.
As to being on a team, they want to make it so the game is playable by both solo players, and those that want to group up. You can form small strike forces like a standard SG team from the show, or go it alone.
Storyline wise, it takes place between Season 8 and 9, and the events will all have been stuff that happens off screen. The main characters will be in the game, but as mentors and quest givers.
And that's all I can remember off the top of my head. All in all, very excited, and I'm going to go sign up for the beta test.

I'm flattered, but I kinda stopped following it a few months back.
My initial impressions were it was going to be more Halo, less Stargate. Also, the Asgard as a playable race is kinda wonky, IMHO, none of the 4 ancient races should be playable(although it'd be cool to have an unlockable quest that lets you see a furling.
The whole look of the game to me was off. Yes the budget limits don't allow the show to have full battle armor, or giant robotic pets, and that's why they aren't in the show. But to me that means it shouldn't be in the game either.
It's like they couldn't do Jar Jar binks in the original Star Wars movies, and that's why they were cool, we got a little person in a can rolling around whistling, and ya know what, it worked.
Just because you can put in something, doesn't mean you should.
The combat is interesting, but I'm wondering how well the Scientists and Archeologists will be able to solo.

Huh... at con the only playable races they mentioned was humans and jafa. Nothing about Asgard, even in the vedio. Now, admittidly, that might just be because they didn't get a question about races, but rather classes.

I figured the Asgard were pretty much set, since they were in the trailer on the Ark of Truth DVD. But I'd actually be relieved if they were taken out.
Of course there's a bunch of SGW forum members that already have their whole asgard character picked out, so they may be a little miffed if they're pulled.

I just reviewed the videos last night, and gotta say, I know they were trying to show off the combat system, but they really should've shown how it was Stargate.
Did they even have a gate in the whole demo other than on the character screen?
Maybe they don't want to give away too much about how they've set up the SGC, but it just didn't at all seem like Stargate except for the staff weapon.
Also, Amoeba-Man mentioned how this is an ideal game for skills, instead of the structured class system. Similar to Asheron's Call or how SWG was originally. I really like SWGs original skill systems, although a little complex, I thought it worked well.
As they are using a structured class system, the 'classes' they've chosen seem a little too radical for their first time out. The scientist and architect classes seem too similar, except one hacks tech stuff and one hacks old tech stuff. The commando and soldier are both..soldiers..so...?
Also, concerned on their comment of the replayability of the 20 minute tutorial, doing it a few times with new characters is fine, doing it every time, for about 20 minutes, is annoying.

Try doing 18-20 levels or "tutorial" for every character like in Age of Conan. Hours each time.

I have only watched Stargate SG-1 Season 1, so I'm not sure I'd be up to date and ready for this MMO. Although if I catch more of the season for 20$ a Costco I'll be good to go.

Is it all solo like they first planned or did that change eventually?

The "night-time" portion where you do you Destiny quest is solo. The rest is MP.

Cheyenne files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, severs ties with Gary Whiting

Anyone who has been keeping an eye on the situation surrounding Stargate Worlds, Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment and related publishing company FireSky, knows that there's been trouble brewing for some time. We've seen struggles to get funding, employees going unpaid (http://www.massively.com/2008/12/05/cheyenne-mountain-responds-to-rumors-of-no-pay-for-employees/), lawsuits for unpaid bills (http://www.massively.com/2009/03/17/cheyenne-mountain-entertainment-sued-over-unpaid-bills/), and some of the studio's main names leaving the building (http://www.massively.com/2009/05/13/stargate-worlds-studio-head-leaves-company-for-gazillion-enterta/). Still, they just released the FPS based on the work they'd been doing for Stargate Worlds, called Stargate: Resistance (http://www.stargateresistance.com/). The hope was that S:R would give Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment a much needed cash infusion.
Now, news has come to light that not only has Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection, but they've also severed all ties with Gary Whiting (http://www.cheyenneme.com/news/587/) -- former Chairman and CEO of CME. Add to that, the shareholders and Cheyenne Mountain have joined forces against Whiting in civil case (CV2010-003106) filed in Maricopa County (http://www.superiorcourt.maricopa.gov/docket/CivilCourtCases/index.asp), naming many other ventures including the curious "interactive social network," MMOGuls Inc (http://www.mymmoguls.com/faq.html). as co-defendants, in a civil complaint "alleging various wrong doing against the Company."
A statement detailing the company's current status was posted today to the Stargate Worlds forums. We've included it behind the break for those interested. In the meantime, let's hope that the change in leadership, combined with a reorganization under Chapter 11, and the release of Stargate: Resistance proves to be the boon that Cheyenne Mountain needs to get back on track -- and into the black.
Taken from the post by Gabriel_FS (http://forums.stargateworlds.com/showpost.php?p=715159&postcount=6):
"Cheyenne Mountain's corporate structure has undergone some dramatic changes in the last few weeks, and that has resulted in various actions such as the filing for Chapter 11. Certain parties believed that was the right thing to do, other parties do not and this is still being evaluated and may be rescinded. Even if the bankruptcy should go through, however, Chapter 11 simply allows a company to restructure its debt to a manageable plan approved by the courts. It does not absolve a company of debt, and it does not shut it down or otherwise affect its daily operations.
This will all be sorted out in the legal and proper manner, and all of us on the development side of things hope it's done as quickly as possible.
That said, our entire staff is in-house working on upgrades and expansions for Stargate Resistance, and we continue to be motivated and excited by the response we've received from our customers.
See you on the battlefield!"
I guess the jury is still out; most "in the know" call it "restructuring" and we could still conceivably see this game in the future (whether it is the "far" or "near" future, remains to be seen). Some call this a "lame duck".
As stated earlier (I think I stated it), personally, I signed up for Beta testing but really was not that interested in the game (or an MMO set in the Stargate enviroment, even though I like the series). It was a "lark" for a "dry spell" and I wanted to try/do something "new".
Here we are, 3 (4?) years later. While I am still not in Beta (but heard others that have gotten in) and am not still that concerned about the game, this does seem to set it back quite a bit.
