Ok, how long do you guys bet the "new" Tony Stark designed Spider-man costume (http://marvel.com/publishing/stories/showstory.htm?id=67) is going to last? I'm putting my money on around a yeah. The design is pretty meh and frankly very un-Spidey-like in my opinion.

Hmm... that sure is an interesting design... After reading it... I still think they should've stuck with Spidey's color scheme. That's like Catwoman designing Batman's costume with purple material... It just doesn't work like that...

Batman: "But Selina, my colors are Black and gray, maybe a little blue..."
Catwoman: "My Design, My colors!"

On the one hand, I think it looks kinda cool (except the feet...he looks like he's wearing worn out socks), but on the other hand, every time they change his costume, they always revert back to the original eventually. Usually with a new writer coming on.

However, I think temporary changes like this are kinda cool. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Yeah, I totally agree. If it's just temporary, then yeah. I'm all for it.

That is exactly what I was thinking. If it is temporary, thats cool. Just don't want to lose his real look forever.
Just like when the black costume came along for Secret Wars. It lasted a short period after Secret Wars and then everyone knows what happened then.

I'm thinking he will wear it for awhile and then they will go back to the original.

Of course then there was the "Scarlet Spider" costume, which I liked, actually. And the the recent version with the silver bracelets. Of course that one got adopted by Spider-Girl.

So, who knows?

It's okay. Just screams out "Action Figure variation" for the folks at Toy Biz. I agree those ankle-socks gotta go.

I'd say a year or less. If you read the article, it says that is sets up certain things between Tony Stark and Peter that come to a head during Civil War. I can bet money that Peter likes his anonymity (protect his family and his private life). I woulda imagined Stark would go either way. I don't know if he ever went public with his identity, but the fact is, he's rich. It won't hurt him too much if he had to reveal that he was Iron Man. So that's potential conflict there.

I am gonna theorize that Peter dumps the suit when arguements become heated or shortly thereafter (perhaps Stark tracks Spiderman through the new Spidey-suit's tech and such info could be given to government types).

(For the pool, I am gonna say...3-6 months after Marvel's Civil War series starts. If you want a more PRECISE time, which is trickier, I will go with 5 months)

That suit looks cool, but not for Spiderman. If it were for another hero, sure, but not Spiderman. Spiderman is one of the few characters, like Superman, that you just don't change the costume.

*sigh* I was scared Marvel was going to find a way to screw us over at the end of The Other storyline (a la Clone Saga). Civil War looks good, but now I'm sure they're gonna screw that up too.

My list of Marvel titles just keeps getting smaller.

I don't like it, makes Spidey look like Iron Man's bitch. And he could tear open IM's suit like a can opener and hand him his ass so that's kinda sad.

I like the one he made on his aunt's sewing machine.

It is temporary.

But it still looks more like a Steel Spider costume than a Spider-Man costume.

If you know who the Steel Spider is, congratulations. You may be almost as big a nerd as I am. ;)

Wow ok so he looks like carnage without the tendrils and a giant yellow version of the venom spider.

Quite retarded...what do they smoke at these "meetings"?

And why does spider man need a new costume? His powers apparently changed but did they change so much that he needs a new gadgety outfit to fill his role?

it reminds me of the 1970's Spider-Woman.
I would have like that new costume if red was black & yellow was red or white.

Same here.

Also, agree with the nice design, but lousy colors. Would have been better of they stuck with his original colors.

He's keeping the stingers that inexplicably come out of his wrists, from what I've heard.

Which is stupid.

When I look at that suit, all I can think is that Peter really needs to iron out the wrinkles before putting it on...

How many other things are going to keep coming out of his wrists? His web, now a stinger... soon he'll be running around with Popeye-like lower arms full of crap.

Solario
01-19-2006, 07:42 PM
Not to mention his new found ability to talk with insects (which is stupid because spiders aren't insects).

I sorta like that his powers are expanding, but please atleast make it make comic book sense.

Gold Rush
01-19-2006, 08:37 PM
I've said it before. This sorta thing just de-humanizes Spiderman, especially the talking to insects (and spiders). How does MJ put up with this? Maybe there are no bugs in their home?

I keep think of Jeff Goldbloom in "The Fly". I think it would be a bit creepy to the general populace of readers and turn them off (unless, they ARE trying to make Spiderman creepier, which *may* work...)

Maybe MJ played with frogs and insects when she was small (although, she DID grow up in New York; not many open wild areas around there. Unless you say Central Park, which I am not sure truly qualifies.)

Okay, in Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man 4 he uses his stingers and those things are so huge, I wonder how they fit into his arms. Only explanation would be that they're actually super dense and hard web formed as stingers, yadda yadda.
And the Other looks like some Venom rip-off story.

Ugh, that Costume is hideous.
The only Spidey I read is Ultimate, and I'm only up to Venom, so guess it doesn't matter to much. From the sound of things, this could have worked but Marvel really dropped the ball.

You can't take a hero like Spiderman and expect people to accept a new look. DC tried the same thing with Superman. If it aint broke don't fix it.

I'm guessing this new costume is for a mini series?

Even though I am not positive that the Black suit was meant as a permanent replacement, Marvel did get its share of flak from fans. Seems like they still love to tinker with it. Given the fact that A) means a new action figure and merchandising and B) causes controversy/talk/buzz which is real good for sales even if the change is bad.

I do agree about Superman's electrical powers and while I didn't read not an issue of it, I sorta liked it and knew it would be temporary. It harkened back to the old Silver Age stories of "Superman-Red and Superman-Blue" and modernized them. Admittedly, it DID draw out over too LONG a period of time, but I did enjoy adding this retro-element to the current Superman myth.

And yeah, not quite a mini-series, but a Marvel event. The suit may last the whole event, get thrown out half-way through or eventually get junked somehow like all of Spiderman's other suits and gadgets seem to be.

I know I'm a minority here, but I actually liked Superman Blue. Atleast from what I've read in Morrison's JLA. 'Course it wasn't really "Superman" to me, but I liked it still.
btw did anyone else see that Hitch picture of it? I mean I normally like Hitch, but he has some serious anatomy problems at times, Spidey's leg is bending, when it should be his ancle bending. Then there's the unafortunate placement of one of the mechanical legs that makes it seem it's coming out from his.. umm.. other opening. And the costume doesn't look any better either.

Solario

I have reevaluated the costume.

I like the gliding bit. But really he should only use it for one of those enevitable fight scene where he's always knocked off a building and there's no where to web or to prehaps avoid getting punched through a building, it should be used to minimize the knockback.

The colors still stink. You don't see Tony Stark painting the entire Avengers HQ red and yellow because he owns the building. Why isn't Peter involved in the design or the tech part given that he's a smart guy? If we have to have those ridiculous mecha legs atleast give him four. The Rectal Retractile has got to go too.

I'm glad it's not a permanent costume.

While the idea of having zooming lenses and 360 degrees vision seems to be a good function (and the 360 degrees is in accordance with the whole SPIDER thing) the eyes are still too close to each other.

Peter is not the Renfield to Tony's Dracula.

The stingers are still stupid. And Spiders are not insects and should thereby not be able to talk to ants and other creepy crawlers. Except Spiders.

I'm glad JMS is laying off the Gwen Stacy and Mystic Stuff. Concerning the magic stuff, while it's ok to go off a tangent like this once in a while, but you don't model entire arcs around it (Plus I just loath the entire idea of destiny and fate, which JMS seems to be heavily devoted to). It'd be like changing the Batman to be about two happy cowboys eating pudding. And the whole Gwen Stacy thing was just beyond logical and meaningful.

A Red-Yellow Captain America leading a Red-and-Yellow Hulk, Red-n-Yellow Thor and a Red-n-Yellow Pym (whatever he was wearing!) served tea by a Red-n-Yellow Jarvis. :P

Back to the "Smart Guy" comment, while I haven't read alot of the recent Spiderman stuff currently going on in comics, the glimpses I am getting seem to point the writers are, in essence, "sweeping this under the rug." I cannot recall any recent examples of seeing Peter Parker practice his intellectual muscles BESIDES during the Spiderman 2 movie. They seem to be either...showing him in the light of a "family man" in the Spider Girl series or showing him being very shy and repressed in his Avengers run. I don't have anything wrong with either of these protrayals, but they seem to focus on these traits and not the others (like his love/interest of science). I haven't even seen much of his teaching job at the university (again, I don't read any of the series).

It'd be like changing the Batman to be about two happy cowboys eating pudding.

Didn't that happen in the "World's Finest" during the Silver Age? :D

Looks like they may've gone too far this time for my tastes.

It really does look like a totally different character. Not at all like Spider-Man.

Actually, I hope he keeps the new costume for many years (although, as stated before, I highly doubt this), mainly because they've changed Peter Parker and his powers SO much, he might as WELL be an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT character. At least I can convince myself the true Spider-Man is dead and bury him in my mind and not worry about him.

New costume is kinda growing on me (except the feet. the feet still look stupid). The extra spider legs on the suit look cool, although they do make him look more menacing. Most of his new powers are interesting, except the stingers and the talking to insects, neither of which make much sense. The night-vision and ability to sense vibrations through his webbing do make a lot of sense though, and should definitely give him a new edge.

You gotta wonder if he's gonna go all Hannibal Lecter again, though.

I have to admit that the suit is growing on me as well. I still want the familiar red and blue he started with, but I could do with him changing them on ocassion.
The powers are growing on me as well. I don't like the whole thing of his 'spiderstingers' coming out of his wrists, but I'm okay with the rest of them.
