I just need to vent...get coffee, this'll take a minute-
I hit the snooze bar one too many times this morning (sorry, last night's team was SO good- just one more mish) so I was already running late when the brown out started (brown outs for those who don't know are when the power does not completely go out but begins to flicker- this is what causes frying of eletronics and appliances). The livingroom started buzzing like a hornet's nest (as I was apparently the only one who remembered to turn off their PC last night) so, half dressed, I ran for the spare bedroom to flip the main breaker. I found a gift from the dog (the squishy way) in front of the breaker box. After flipping the breaker and swearing at the dog, I realized that in my rush I had neglected to grab a flashlight. I stumbled back through the house to find the flashlight and finish dressing. Popping my head in the housemate's room to let him know about the power, I find my previously mentioned traiterous dog - who I then have to convince it's not time to play.
Finally leaving the house, I find that the power outage covers an extended area and almost get smashed by 3 cars who didn't get the memo about 4 way intersections becoming 4 way stops when the lights are out. Well, I was awake after that at least. I have a 30 mile commute over 3 freeways to work- 1/2 up freeway #2, someone decided to count the raindrops on their windshield as traffic in the 'fast' lane slowed to 30mph for 5 miles. Ok, I get to work...30 minutes late -of course all the close spots are taken. I park 1/4 mile away and walk in the rain to the office. Yes, I was wearing my coat and hat (but the legs of my jeans are still damp). It's Friday...everyone is smiles - I loathe that on a bad day.
I get my PC booted up and call my electric company - the auto operator informs me they are aware of the outage and that there are over 1,000 customers affected, crews have been dispatched and the power should be on by 8:45am. I call my parents (who live 3 houses down from me) to find out that the power came back up at 6:45...when I was in that traffic jam. Then my overly compassionate mother won't let me off the phone and feels the needs to play 20 questions as to why my mood is dark. I love her, but if I say I don't want to talk about it now - don't push it - respect my desire to not discuss it. I know I'll get a visit from her heavily laden w/ motherly guilt tonight.
So, here I sit at work stewing over my morning...I'll be under my desk if anyone needs me.
