I've decided to make a Gravity/Kinetics controller. I've never played a controller beforeso it's all fairly new to me. Not many guides on the official site, so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on any builds or tips on being a controller. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Sorry I have an ice/storm troller. I've played with a kin defender but she met the delete button after lvl 16 and I've never attempted a gravity troller. ;)

But from what I have seen, it'll probably be a lot better if you took ice, earth, illusion, or fire with kin. You can buff your pet(s) to get the most out of your powers after lvl 32.

Oh and take Fulcrum Shift at lvl 38.

My first character coming out of Beta was a gravity/kinetics controller. If you stick it out you'll do ok, Kinetics is a great set for yourself, you get a damage buff, couple of travel powers, a high hp heal(targetted around mob), an endurance recoverer thing.

Gravity is the issue, you have a lot of holds, but compared to the other sets it's really lacking in hootspah comparatively.

Illusion is just uber, with the pets and the rampant destroying.

Fire is uber with it's holds and damage and uberness.

Ice is uber with it's slicks and confusing air and quick activating holds and what not.

Mind is ok as long as nobody drops an aoe, levitate is cool.

Earth, same as mind, with cool poo animations.

But Gravity is meh, it's slow to do stuff with, you don't even get an inherent flight power, which, duh, it's gravity control, you should at least get that. You do get the ability to pull random objects through a wormhole and fling them at people, but I thought this was gravity control not random object manifesting. And for all the holds, you can't hold bosses unless you stack them.

But, like I said, if you stick it out, it may reward you with a pet later on. And that's about it, Kinetics is the saving grace of that build, which is why I rerolled my controller as a Kinetics/electric. Still get a hold with electric, and you can bring Bosses to their knees.

Hmm, taking these tips into consideration, I think I'm going to go with an Earth/Kinetics build. Thanks alot for the advice :)

[Edit] Had second thoughts about it; Going with Illusion/Kinetics instead.

Chill, it depends on what you plan on doing. I play a Ice/Storm controller and he is built for PvP and PvE in mind. If you want to be a great controller and not concerned with buffing and healing teammates Storm is the secondary to go with. Combining Ice and Strom adds so many slow powers it is ridiculous. Then throw in Lightning Storm and Jack Frost and you are a power house. Illusion is good but not as effective in PvP. It is a great primary for PvE though and can effectively solo.

Earth/Storm is also a great combo. Earth offers fast activating powers which is essential in PvP and can come in handy in PvP. My Ice/Storm controller is all about debuff and being just a major pain in the butt for my opponents. I do very little damage yet. Slot everything with 3 slows and you should be in good shape for PvP and PvE and be the hero of any mission team!

I have a lvl 20 (thanks winter lords!) grav/kin controller. She is real fun to play in groups. I can't solo at this point.... maybe at a later level. So far my fav controller is mind.

You should hunt down Cryo as she's the uber grav controller here. ;)
And here she is talking about the set. (http://www.cohguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1603)

I have a Controller I build for melee, and Kinetics comes in quite handy as it helps balance the lack of damage. Since Containment, however, Controllers have gained a lot more damage capability. I had no trouble soloing my Illusion/Kin, but that was because of my odd build, and so I really can't offer a lot of direct advice.

The basics, though, are just to make sure that you can keep a foe held and then have a good chain of attacks to deal as much damage as you can. I've never tried Earth, but with Kinetics you have a lot of potential to boost your team's and your own damage with Siphon Power, Speed Boost, Transference, and of course the ever-popular Fulcrum Shift. That heal (Transfusion) pretty much ties you to melee, so IMHO you're more of a front line support, or at least that's the way I've always played it. (I'm more of a meleer myself with this Scraptroller, so it fits. You'd probably want to stand a bit further back, you can still back up the Tanker)

Let's see what I have here...

Lvl 35 Earth/Storm (my main):

I love the combo, and Stoney isn't too shabby as a pet. I just recently hit 35 and got the tornado. I've seen where some people don't like it, but I love it. I hold everyone with stone cages and then throw out the tornado and with everything held in place, once I slot it up for dmg it should do ok.

Lvl 33 Grav/Kin:

I absolutely love playing this character. Kinetics is such a cool secondary considering everything you can do with it. I've been able to solo so much stuff with this one. My trick is air superiority. I took it with my main too, but it really shines here. I'll drop a hold on a mob, and then I proceed to pummel his buddy with a combo of lift and AS, all while keeping the other mobs held by alternating between them. The combo of lift and AS works great as one lifts and one knocks them down, so it makes it real tough for the mob to get any shots off.

Lvl 24 Illusion/Empathy:

I don't have the Phantasm yet, but this guy is still pretty good. I was going to go with Ill/Kin, but I wanted to try something different.

Lvl 14 Fire/Kin:

I tried fire with just about every secondary, and this has been the only one I've liked. Since he has a speedster concept, I actually took flurry and slotted it up. Now when I hold something, I pummel with flurry. Works similar to my other controllers with AS.

Lvl 14 Mind/FF:

Mind control is so much fun...if only it had a pet :(

I had an ice/storm controller too, but I rerolled her into a ice/ice dominator.

Chill, it depends on what you plan on doing.

With this new build of Illusion/Kin, for the most part, I'll be doing PvE. I mean I'll try PvP every once and awhile, but I'll be focusing on PvE mostly. Thanks for the tips everyone; they've been very helpful.

P.S. - Any suggestions on a name? His backstory is he's a teenage magician who's powers developed during a performance at his high school's annual talent show. I was going to go with Curtain Call, but sadly it was taken  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
