Recently Manticore took the time to make some corrections to the Surviving Eight in this (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=general&Number=2742818&bodyprev=#Post2742818) thread. Two words...Trick Arrow? WTF?

Due to the upcoming Power Sets Manticore is actually a Trick Arrow, Archery Defender.
Holy Cow! I can't even imagine how that could be a defensive set. *drools over new powerset*

[double take] You're right, Archery is a Defender Power Set? Interesting...

Of course, it's still possibly that Archery could be available to both. But I thought of Kinetics/Archery as a possible Defender combination. The Kinetics would be using arrows in various ways to buff and debuff. I'm guessing Trick Arrow is the same thing. Maybe knockback (boxing glove) and gas arrows with various debuffs. It would actually fit better with the way Green Arrow and Hawkeye use their bows.

The only problem is, Green Arrow and Hawkeye are good enough in melee that I figured they were Blasters. And net arrows and that kind of thing to hold a target would be more a Blaster's style. Defenders are weak AoE control powers and debuffs, Blasters are strong single target controls.

The Power Sets aren't released yet, they can change their minds, just as they changed their minds about Positron and Sister Psyche.

Speaking of which, I find it funny that Positron and Luminary switched Power Sets. (and archetypes) Sister Psyche and Swan also switched, to an extent, Sister Psyche got Swan's Force Field, and Swan switched to Kinetics. I guess even the devs are infected with alt-itis. :D

BTW, while posting in the other thread, it suddenly occured to me that Net Arrow could be a hold in the Ranged Set, like Tesla Cage. So there wouldn't need to be a separate Blaster Secondary for that, and it wouldn't have to be in Trick Arrow, either. I still say Kinetics would work just as well, but since you will actually SEE the archer debuffing his foes with the arrows, I suppose that is better.

DEFENDER?! Trick Arrow and Archery are defender Power Sets?!

I would say that Archery is a Blaster's Primary and a Defender's secondary power. Trick Arrow seems to be a special and new Defender Primary.

Holy Cow! I can't even imagine how that could be a defensive set. *drools over new powerset*

Oh, I definately can:

Boxing Glove Arrow - This arrow applies a great deal of force to the target, knocking him back a considerable distance, but does minimal damage.

Smoke Screen Arrow - You fire a spiraling arrow that trails a cloud of smoke behind it, creating a thick smokescreen around yourself and your allies. You and all your allies are harder to see, and even if seen and attacks, get a bonus to defense.

Choking Cloud Arrow - Similar to the Smoke Screen Arrow, this arrow is fired at a foe, and then surrounds him in thick, choking smoke. The smoke reduces the target's accuracy, and fire rate, as well as the accuracy and fire rate of any targets around him.

Luminous Cloud Arrow - Explodes on contact with a foe, coating him in a luminous material that makes him easier to see, reducing his Defense against all attacks. Any foes in a radius around the target will also be caught in the explosion and coated as well.

I can't wait for this to hit the servers. I've always wanted a Bow powerset.

BTW, I would say that the Green Archer (from Gauntlet Legends, i.e., Widdy's Gauntlet Legends Supergroup) is DEFINATELY a Blaster. She doesn't use trick arrows, she's just about damage and high fire rate. So while Green Arrow and Hawkeye might be Defenders under the new Power Sets, there are at least some examples of archery Blasters.

Heh. Some time ago, someone on the main boards started a thread about what 10 most commonly used names would be for bow and arrow users once they were in-game. The thread basically turned into a gigantic dictionary on the various spellings of "Legolas" and the multitude of ways the word "Bow" could be used. :)

It makes sense now!

Trick Arrows can cause debuffs, and Archery is just the regular ranged sets. Mwuhaha. Reserving my name now.

Awesome...
Really makes me want to play one. Bows and Arrows are really stylish, and a defender even, my favourite AT? Suh-weet!

But I know there'll be other, new, tasty powersets...

cool, if they don't come out with pistols, atleast I'll have time to waste with the archery powerset while i wait.... that would put me at Maveric's 41st reroll... :p

And let us not forget that plain old Archery (without "tricked out" arrows) could conceivably be used for debuffs as well. A called shot to the feet, knees or Achilles tendon to immobilize, a called shot to the wrist to reduce their Accuracy and Damage, a glancing shot to the neck to sleep them.... ;)

I wonder if archery wont have a bit of inherent stealth to it, after all arrows are VASTLY more silent than rifle shots.

Thought it was common knowledge that Archery was going to be for Blasters AND Defenders. Never occured to me that it would be a primary for Defenders though....

Wha?

Arrows arn't that damaging, which makes alittle bit of sense, considering we do Medium damage (I remember when we had medium health, but those blasters went to normal and was changed to low. Bastards.

Maybe then Blasters get the Sonics? Defenders get Archery, Scrappers get boxing, Controllers get a Dark Control set, and Tankers get shape shifting?(probably not, but AM can dream.)

The Widowed
04-27-2005, 10:48 PM
Or maybe Shapeshifting would be a Pool Power, so the mysterious Puddle People of Nebulon V can use their natural transformative powers regardless of which Archetype they adopt for their career? :)

True, but archers are usually faster than machine gun users, and considerably more accurate. I wouldn't have any problem at all with calling someone like Green Arrow or Hawkeye a Blaster, considering their accuracy. Arrows can be pretty damaging when you put one through your target's trachea. Or in his eye...

Plus, usually the "trick" arrows can do things like explode.

If a Martial Artist can kick The Thing and do Scrapper level damage to him, then an Archer can use a bow and do Blaster level damage.

We are currently live with issue #3 (Council of War), and the Arena will be part of issue #4 (Colosseum)
