View Full Version : Urban Bushido Tournament IV: Blood in the Water

When: We can shoot for Wednesday, November 16, at 8:00 PM Central, unless too many people object. :p
Where: Well, there's the dilemna. Here are four possibilities:
The Arenas
Pro: Battles and arena settings are easily customized for various contestants. Safe from gankers or other intruders. Resurrection from defeat is fast and conveniently local. Heroes may challenge other Heroes, and Villains may challenge other Villains. Matches may be set to any predetermined level, to avoid an infinite stand-off between two SL 50's (like we had last time).
Con: Longer set-up time. May not be possible to host matches between Heroes and Villains. Procuring observers is more difficult (for those who prefer an audience).
Bloody Bay
Pro: Auto-exemps to SL/TL 15 to place contestants on a level playing field. Bloody Bay is accessible even to lower-level Heroes and Villains. Less set-up time between matches. Populated with and accessible to other players, allowing more publicity for the event and its contestants.
Con: Some contestants may oppose such a low auto-exemp level. Matches can only be Hero vs. Villain. No hospitals exist in Bloody Bay, making return from defeat very difficult and time-consuming. Expansive zone; Teleporters may be necessary to convey contestants to the duel site. Intruding Heroes can gank contending Villains, and vice-versa. Wandering NPC's may interfere with matches.
Siren's Call
Pro: Auto-exemps to SL/TL 20 to place contestants on a level playing field. Siren's Call is accessible to mid-level Heroes and Villains or higher, making for more interesting matches. Less set-up time between matches. Populated with and accessible to other players, allowing more publicity for the event and its contestants.
Con: Matches can only be Hero vs. Villain. Two hospitals exist in Siren's Call--one for each faction--but their distances to the duel site can still cause delays between rounds. Expansive zone; Teleporters may be necessary to convey contestants to the duel site. Intruding Heroes can gank contending Villains, and vice-versa. Wandering NPC's may interfere with matches.
Warburg
Pro: Auto-exemps to SL/TL 28 to place contestants on a level playing field. Warburg is accessible to higher-level Heroes and Villains, allowing for matches heavy on superpowers. Less set-up time between matches. Heroes may challenge other Heroes, and Villains may challenge other Villains. Populated with and accessible to other players, allowing more publicity for the event and its contestants.
Con: Two hospitals exist in Warburg--one for each faction--but their distances to the duel site can still cause delays between rounds. Expansive zone; Teleporters may be necessary to convey contestants to the duel site. Wandering NPC's may interfere with matches. Gankers are plentiful in Warburg and may attack contestants from either faction at a whim.
Permitted Archetypes:
Scrapper
Tanker
Blaster
Peacebringer (possibly, in Arena only, with travel powers disabled)
Stalker
Brute
Corruptor
Mastermind (possibly; Remember: Killing the Mastermind kills the pets as well.)
The Big Idea(s):
These ideas may be included or omitted from the tournament, depending on majority opinion.
1) Team duels. Fighters will team up in pairs, with partners allotted randomly (read: plenty of dice-rolling and/or coin tosses). For obvious reasons, Heroes cannot team up with Villains. The duo which still has one or both members still standing at the end of a round wins that round. This may require an even number of contestants to work, possibly equal numbers of Heroes and Villains as well.
1A) Tag teams. Contestants should prepare the following macro:
/macro Tag, "local Tag, $target!"
A typical tag team match ensues. Any active contestant who wishes to switch places with his/her partner would simply run to the sidelines where the partner is waiting, target the partner and fire off the macro. Any sidelined contestant who attacks the other team or otherwise interferes with the match results in a disqualification for his/her team, forfeiting the match and giving victory to the other team. For this match to work, we would need a ring, large cage, fenced-in yard or other duel site with clearly defined boundaries.
2) Rumble in the Bronx. Possible if the tournament takes place in Bloody Bay or Siren's Call. Up to five Heroes on one team, and up to five Villains on the other. Matches are not divided into rounds; The last team standing wins that match.
3) Justice is Blind. Each match will be presided over by two judges, one Hero of Shodan (read: Captain) rank or higher from Urban Bushido and one representative of Captain rank or higher from any well-known Villain Group (such as Fracture, Dark Shroud or, yes, Malice in Wonderland Reshuffled). This will ensure a more impartial presence presiding over matches between Heroes and Villains. As if Urban Bushido couldn't be trusted to refrain from rigging the matches.... :P
4) Newton's Law. Matches will take place on top of buildings, rooftops, mesas, cliffs or other elevated surfaces with drop-offs. A ring-out (where one contestant falls off the surface and, therefore, out of the ring) results in a victory for whoever didn't fall off in that round. Knockback attacks reign supreme here. (Pro: A feasible alternative for deciding a winner when beating each other into the blacktop isn't a likely outcome. Con: People with extra respecs six-slotting their Crane Kicks for Knockback.)
5) Beaver Beaver BeavSPLAT! Any jokes about beavers will result in the Widowed declaring a 100,000 Inf bounty awardable to whomever deals the deathblow to the offending joker. Expect a gang bash to ensue shortly after. That'll teach ya! >:]
The reward for a tournament winner could be Influence/Infamy, it could be Salvage, it could be Enhancements or Inspiration, or it could be nothing more than bragging rights. At this time, I do not know if it is possible to initiate trades between Heroes and Villains (in the event that a Villain wins the tournament), but if someone could enlighten me....
We're still hashing out the details in this stage, and you can be a part of that process. Questions, concerns or additional Big Ideas can be fielded here.

Hahaha.... Love the match ideas.
We should do some research and solve some of the problems with these arrangements (ie. if Heroes and Villains can face each other in the Arenas, or if Heroes can trade with Villains).
Do you think I should put the choice of battleground into a poll, including the previous list with all the Pros and Cons?
Kurai Inago
11-09-2005, 04:45 AM
Hmm... Well I think if at all possible, the matches should be held in the Arena... however, I'm not all too clear on whether or not Heroes can face Villains there.
The Widowed
11-09-2005, 04:54 AM
I think I can think of a way to answer that question. Tonight's a Matrix night (seeing as Emerald's this close to picking up Hyper Dodge), but you can bring one of your Villains who's near TL6-8ish to the Arena in Port Oakes, I'll bring Mary O'Knickers to Galaxy City's Arena and we can go from there.
Just remember to enable the option to talk to Heroes, and I'll enable chat with Villains. Maybe later we can swing by Bloody Bay and look into the trading issue. :D
EDIT: And we still have to bring the Whippoorwill into Urban Bushido, too. She's ready to go, right? :)

The last tourney was a great time. I'll plan to be there. At this point I'm leaning towards Greux, but unless we do team matchs he would be completely owned. Ether that or Wu, who is still carrying a bit of a grudge for missing the second half. If its Warberg I'll bring in Graphite at some point just for laughs.

Tonight wasn't good; We had another couple vacate their apartment and, therefore, another mess to clean up. They had punched holes in the walls and they broke one of the windows in their bedroom. Not to mention they let the cat poop all over the carpet. I think we'll be keeping their deposit.
But the problem I see is a lack of organization, and I'm to blame for that. So I've set up another poll for the location of the fourth tournament. If we get three or more answers before 8:00 PM Central tomorrow (today?), the tournament can take place as soon as tomorrow.
We have a 'when', and we'll handle the 'who' when everyone shows up. All we need is a 'where'.
And we may also need a correspondent for the Villains, to round them up like I'll be rounding up the Heroes. Do we have any volunteers?

Time to make it official.
The Fourth Urban Bushido Tournament will take place on Sunday, November 27 at 8:00 PM Central. This should give anyone who wishes to participate enough time to prepare and/or clear their schedule. It will also give us more time to locate new contestants and reap a more substantial turn-out.

If by annoyance you mean "(runs away really fast/bounds away/flies high/teleports into the rafters) whenever the battle turns the slightest bit against them, thus ensuring that--while they might not win--they certainly won't be defeated", then yes. Travel powers = incredible annoyance.

I'm still going to try and get Sandy in this time around. I don't know if she can survive that long in hand to hand range, though, and so I'm hoping ranged attacks are okay as long as they are within melee range or near melee range. You have to stop to attack anyway, and so there shouldn't be any advantage in dodging around as long as it's limited to the ring.
Sandy will certainly stay on the ground and will try to stay within the area of the ring. But then I saw LOTS of melee combatants running from their opponents both inside and outside the ring, in the last match. So don't say that's just a Blaster tactic. :D
If not, Bloodwolf can drop by again. I'll even withdraw Sandy if it looks like she can't work out with the tournament's rules. I just want to give her a try.

Well, I wrote a story where the rule was your feet could only leave the ground for three seconds. So winged critters could use their wings to maneuver, but couldn't fly away. And it fit the movements of the characters in game which I was basing the story on. So even if it wasn't stated explicitly in the game, there would probably be a rule like that.
Sandy's not planning to fly, though. The only reason I'd use Hover is for the Defense bonus, and since she can run faster than she can fly, I'll probably only use it if you turn travel powers OFF. :D

Like with the previous tournaments, we frown on the use of Inspirations. It just feels like fighters can "purchase" victory with these rather than win honorably. We'd still love to have Xan there, though. :)

I'm pretty sure Hover doesn't offer a defense bonus anymore. Was part of the initial I5 Defense/Resistance changes.
The Widowed

So no enhancements either then? :P
I'd only bring break frees anyway.
Enhancements are a constant part of your character, one which can be accounted for and--for an insightful opponent--possibly circumvented or defeated. Not to mention that 50,000 Influence for a Single-Origin Damage Enhancement is a considerable investment compared to a handful of 50-Influence Enrages.
But there's little that's more infuriating in PvP than to fight yourself to exhaustion and beat your opponent against the ropes right to the brink of defeat only to hear those familiar "whoosh" noises and see their Health and Stamina skyrocket from the Resurgence and Second Wind that they just gulped down, thus instantly undoing all the hard work you invested in beating them down fair and square. It's just as annoying to see them run right up to you and sink four or eight Enrages--which they just bought from the Arena vendors, just for you--into one deadly Crane Kick or Haymaker, along with whatever other attacks follow right after that. Saints help you if they happen to have a Righteous Rage handy.... :rolleyes:
Precaution dictates that we have to forbid all Inspirations, period. But if there were an option in the match settings for choosing which types of Inspirations were acceptable, I wouldn't have a problem with only blocking the Respites and the Catch a Breaths, and maybe the Lucks and the Sturdys too. Break Free offsets the living cheapness that is Controllers and Dominators, Insight makes high-Defense impossible-to-hit foes possible to hit, Enrage counters the lack of balance between the Scrapper's damage output and the Tanker's health and damage mitigation, and Luck and Sturdy are handy if you're one fighter who wants to hold off several opponents and buy time for your teammates...at least until the other team starts popping Insight and Enrage. But Luck and Sturdy--like Respite and CaB--still have the potential for making matches drag on and on, while the rest are handy for ending matches more quickly.
Some people detest Inspirations in PvP, others don't mind them at all. It is testament to their potential for annoyance or frustration that I've only done the sink-lots-of-Enrage-into-Crane-Kick trick to either A) beat up Archvillains or B) punish gankers in Warburg. But that's just my opinion; Mileage may vary. Thoughts?

No Practiced Brawler? O_o
Focus Chi you can live without, but believe me, you want PB as early as possible. I would have put off a travel power till 16 and gotten PB instead, is my opinion.
Then again, my current build with my MA/SR is...
01) --> Storm Kick (1xAcc, 3xDamage, 1xRecharge)
01) --> Focused Fighting (1xEndRedux, 1xDef)
02) --> Cobra Strike (1xAcc, 1xDisorient)
04) --> Agile (1xDef)
06) --> Focus Chi (2xRecharge)
08) --> Crane Kick (1xAcc, 3xDam, 1xEndRedux)
10) --> Air Superiority (1xAcc, 1xDam)
12) --> Focused Senses (1xEndRedux)
14) --> Practiced Brawler (when I hit 14)
Edit: I'm an idiot. Regen doesn't have PB. But I will leave this here for people to laugh at me. Heh.

I'm trying to puzzle this together, Widdy, but some of it doesn't make sense. For instance:
The Kripto/Azure Spector match continued from the first rank all the way to the semi-finals?
The President SK/Marrow Lash match went to the Quarterfinals, but niether of them won?
The same issue is repeated with the Steel Heart/Ahn Quan and Haze/Vindicator brackets.

Was a good time, Dixie Samurai and I made it to the finals against Azure Spectre and Kripto. On the way there, we had a lot of good matches, some of them were really close. Poor Dixie got beaten down a lot more than I did, but she was a level 35 invuln scrapper compared to my level 50 regen, so she seemed to have the target bullseye on her in any matchup we were in.
Sorry I had to rush the last fight along, but it was getting late.
The last fight against Azure and Kripto was no contest at all, they walked all over us. Well done. Did you have accuracy debuff enhancements, or was that all touch of fear that was making us miss so much? The fear component of it wasn't bothering me at all, I had a tray full of break frees. But even with both of us teaming up on one of you, we couldn't dent either one of you enough to even be noticeable. We couldn't even make Azure turn on his instant healing, he was never in trouble enough to need it. :)
The first match, we tried picking on Kripto. Invulns had been one of our primary targets up until then, and it had worked in most of the other fights. By the time Dixie fell, I'm not sure if I had seen Kripto's health dip more than a quarter of a bar at the most. I punched instant healing, but it was just delaying the inevitable. Once it wore off, the two of you beat me down handily.
The second match, we tried picking on Azure. If anything, it felt like we damaged him less than Kripto. Probably because any of the small amount of damage we did to him healed back slowly throughout the fight, where Kripto's didn't in the first match. Dixie fell first, and the fight was over a lot faster since instant healing wasn't back up for me.
The third match, we knew it didn't matter what tactics we tried really, but we tried Kripto again, focusing on brawling a lot to try to drop his toggles. Missed almost all of my brawls, Dixie fell. Azure and Kripto rubbed it in a little by switching to tag team mode, but I just punched instant healing and kept going after whoever was "tagged out", trying to get both of them to fight me. :)
Was a fun evening overall though.

I slot ToF for debuff actually. Dixie was telling me last night that it has a base acc debuff of 20% or so (if I remember right). At 44 I think I have 4 slots in it 2 acc, 1 debuff, 1 recharge and plan to put another debuff in it just for AVs and things like that. I thought you guys did really well, and sorry for rushing all the fights along, I thought I was in a rush but ended up not having to be.

If only we could have a Tournament on a Wedsneday or Thursday so that I can take part -_-

I'm not sure on the 20% but I do know it's very high, much more so then the other dark melee attacks. I know for a fact that it's the single greatest reason you won that fight. One is bad enough but two going off on one person is just nasty. At any given time I had probably 8 different markers off to the side of my standard passive and active defenses all taking off accuracy. Even if I double slotted accuracy in all my attacks I'm not sure I would have been able to hit you.
Still, it was really cool to throw together a pick up team with Red Nile and kick everyone else's butt. :D

Red is double slotted for accuracy in all her attacks, triple slotted for accuracy in air superiority. The acc debuffs were still making her attacks useless. :) Might have to get touch of fear at some point if we're ever given another respec, though Red has used up all of hers for now. I can probably get rid of dark consumption for it, since her endurance bar hardly budges now that instant heal is a clickie instead of an endurance hog toggle.

Yeah, ToF is a base 20% debuff. I've got 3 Cytoskeletons (Accuracy/ToHit Debuffs/Defense Debuffs) and 3 Fear Durations in there. That brings the grand total to about a 39% debuff. And the most damaging part? It STACKS. You probably had about 4 debuffs on you at any given time, more than enough to floor your accuracy. :P
Heh, I was going one on one against Druid, and didn't use ToF during the match. After the match was over, I spammed ToF on him, and he couldn't hit me, even with Buildup. It is very, very nasty.
