Okay, so in a few threads now, the topic of ren faires has come up. I just thoght I'd see who all here goes, if you belong to a guild, pics of you in garb, etc. :)
I'll start.
I've been going to faires for almost 5 years now. Mostly, they are local faires, but every year I go to one in Vegas, and almost ever year I go to another one in Palm Springs. I belong to a guild, the Archers of Ravenwood (www.ravenwoodarchers.org), an archery guild. Yes, I know how to shoot a bow. Am I good at it? Not really. :P
Some pics:

Never been to one, always been intrigued by it, but maybe because i dont know anybody that goes ive never managed to find out when/where one will be taking place. Im a huge fantasy nut (dnd etc.) so the era appeals to me at least. Hopefully someday i'll find one to go check out.

I used to belong to the Society for Creative Anachronisms, way back in the Dark Ages (eheh) when I was a kid. But I haven't been in a long time. There is a Renaissance Festival in Houston every year, but I only go every couple of years or so.

I went up to the Ren Fair in upstate New York last summer. I had an awesome time. The food was really good and they put on a lot of good shows. Can't wait to go again this summer.
Only thing that sucked is the day we went it was REALLY hot and you could tell the actors in the armor were getting really tierd. So hopefully it won't be as bad next time.
I was told by a number of people that they put one on in Penn' that puts the New York one to shame. Hopefully I can check that one out too.
Just went to one in Irwindale, California last weekend... And I dare say the temperature was perfect!
I go as an elf half the time... lemme see if I've got a picture...

If you're wondering what I'm doing, I'm counting touches for starcrosser (who was also there) who was fencing. This is an old picture, though. My recent costume was green and black.

We have one thats around my birthday, and i am hoping i can go this year... If i go as a squire, or some medieval type dressed, i get in for free... now, for a costume. Anybody have suggestions? (100$ limit, Please:) )
I use to be part of the Cymry Glyn Equestrians at the Shrewsbury Faire (http://www.shrewfaire.com) near Corvallis, OR, but real life happened (marriage, two kids). Hopefully I'll get to go this year and just wander around. I hope to take Nyx and Starcrosser with me :) (we should coordinate outfits. I suck at sewing though)
Here's a couple pictures of me in my two sets of original garb. I had to wear doublet, britches, and strong boots (horse and pony hooves hurt like hell!) in case certain critters stepped on my feet. Naturally my husband forgot the camera so no pics of me in my dress and my daughter in her matching one (with cute little fairy wings that a certain mommy bought her.)

The simplest thing is a long, plain-colored shirt (long sleeved, short sleeved, doesn't really matter. white works pretty good) that you can put a belt over, as a tunic. Some brown or other neutral colored pants, and boots or sandals... also, if you want a tabbard, just take a long strip of cloth about a foot wide, cut a hole in the middle for your head, and put the belt over that too. Comes down the front and back. i ought to have a picture of one somewhere, but, eh...
I hope to take Nyx and Starcrosser with me Oh, definitely! I've missed Shrewsbury for four years due to college, so i'm very happy to be able to go again. ^_^ We're also going to actually camp at another one this summer, i forget which.

I think Starcrosser is refering to a clothing that looks similar to THIS (http://www.drachenschmiede.de/shopdeutsch/assets/thumb/hv-mna1010-k.jpg) one.
Simply white shirt, strip of cloth as tabbard and simply brown trousers

There is a Renaissance Festival in Houston every year, but I only go every couple of years or so.
I attended a magnet high school called "The Science Academy of South Texas", and while everyone other HS Senior Trip was to Europe or an amusement park ours was to the Houston '01 Ren Faire...
Nothing like 70 (total graduating senior class was 80) HS nerds, geeks, and weirdos wandering around buying swords and quoting Simpsons and screaming "INQUSITION" every 10 minutes. :chuckle:
Nary a wench was safe 'round me... :naughty:

Simply white shirt, strip of cloth as tabbard and simply brown trousers probably the most basic thing out there for starters. Though i think that's an over-tunic, not a tabbard, but close enough. I wonder if table-runners would make good tabbards....? 0_o

Went to a couple of Ren Fairs out in IL. It was really cool. I think the highlight for me was watching the falconer, talking with him and going behind the stage to actually get a lesson. Before I had seen one in rl I read books about them. I am still currently working on studying the hobby(need to get and read one more book) and then I will apply for my falconry apprenticeship. Once I get that going I'll see if I can't be the falconer myself in the fair one day :) I have a long way to go lol but I'm working on it one step at a time!!

Man, I should have taken the Blacksmithing course in our Projects week. Cool thinks were created there, and I could have learned some things that I could use on a Ren Faire, if I would ever attend one not as a visitor.

I used to be really big on SCA but had to quit. It's far too expensive a habit (or it was for me). I've attended events all over the US as well as in the Netherlands, Germany, Scotland, and of course Britain. I was one of the geeks who spent thousands of dollars on custom made armor and weapons for an edge in the various competitions. On the bright side, I do still have a full set of leather armor and a handcrafted chain cuirass, along with the various weapons. Good for the occasional event. :)

this is as close as i got to garb at the renfaire in st.louis..i like the clothing even joined the SCA..but quit as i was ignored by the fighters there (they wouldnt teach me, i learned some of the older dances ...which i have since forgotten and the guys werent thrilled about the chicks dancing with me..then again neither was my wife)

Take some vacation time in the next year or so and spend the weekend at the Texas Ren Faire they have camp grounds set up and a RV area for those who want to spend the entire weekend there. I'll dig up the Texas Ren Faire website and post it up here.

Yeah, it's called a "T-Tunic" and it's like the T-shirt and jeans of the medieval era... figure it'll work just fine with Ren Faires as well. I
ve recently started with the SCA and so I'm still sporting the whole ghetto fabulous newbie look, Tark. Here's my garb, it might help you. ANd the good thing is that it was all really cheap.
(1) Leather shoes that don't look *too* modern, or even mocasons. (sp?)
(2) Plain colored or striped pajama pants.
(3) Aforementioned t-tunic and tabard
(4) Belt around the waist.
There you go, bud - you're set. Just google for T-tunic and you'll come up with lot's of easy to follow instructions. Your mom (or aunt or grandma or your friend's mom - just someone who can sew) will be able to measure, cut, and sew it up in about 15 minutes...
Good luck, bud.

Missed the Ren Faire up here this year money was a bit tight at the time but maybe between me and the BF we'll be able to save up enough to take a long weekend this year and go to the Texas Ren Faire in October.

There's a very nice Ren Faire near me. I've only been once, and didn't go in costume because I'm one of those people that doesn't want to do a costume halfway: it's all or nothing for me, and costumes like the one I'd want are expensive.
I have a penchant for capes, though; I have three, and I bought an exquisite wool one at the Ren Faire I went to, which serves as my winter coat. :)
I hope to go again this year but I'm afraid I might have already missed it... *goes to the amazing intarweb to check*
EDIT: Hooray! I haven't missed it! It's coming up. :) *starts planning*
Maybe if I go, and if I get it together enough to have a nice cossie, I'll post pictures. But it's not likely: no cossie, very little time, and no digicam. :(

Well, I go to the ones that are around me. The King Richard's Faire (http://www.kingrichardsfaire.net/) is ginormous! Hence the arm and leg it takes to enter the place. But it's the size of a whole village.
The others I go to are $10-$15 to enter. Woodstock, CT has been growing in size and the one in VT (http://www.vtrenfest.com/index.html) has also. It was our first year going to the one in Ansonia CT (http://www.parkcityrenaissancefaire.com/) but we enjoyed ourselves very much. The lanterns strung up for the evening was very nice as was the fireshow. :)
