Sonic Star: Defection

January 2nd 2005

Vincent slowed his breathing as he took aim at the man sitting next to the podium, knowing he would have to strike before the man rose to make the speech. The wind was blowing slightly, but he had already adjusted his sight for it. The only thing left to do was shoot.
“But is this really the right thing to do?”
“It’s for your Country”
“But the guy has a daughter, you’ve met her, she’s a nice kid.”
“This is more important than that”
“But what would it do to her? I mean, he can’t be that bad of a guy.”
“Just Shoot”
“I can’t”
“Do it”
“I won’t. I can’t just crush the lives of three people for some ridiculous ideology.”
He returned the rifle to the place on his back and began to walk back towards the elevator.
“What are you doing Beta?” Cracked an all too familiar voice over his intercom
“I can’t do this. He has a kid. He’s a nice guy”
“That’s not important, if you go back now you’ll still have time to complete the objective.”
“I don’t care.” He finished, throwing the intercom off the side of the building.
“Kill him” he heard from down the elevator shaft, presumably from another soldiers intercom.
“Fine.. We’ll do this the hard way” Vincent thought to himself, retrieving his pistol from its side
holster as he walked into the buildings brightly lit lobby.
“Surrender now and we’ll go easy on you Beta.” Rasped Hollahan, one of the soldiers, barely understandable through his gas mask.
Vincent kept walking towards them, pistol in hand
“DROP THE WEAPON!” Shouted the second soldier, Hinkley, rasing his own.
In a fluid motion Vincent grabbed the Hollahan’s MP5 and smashed his elbow through the goggles of his mask, and almost simultaneously swept his leg under Hinkley's leg knocking him to the ground, and fired at Hinkley’s legs with the MP5 taken from Hollahan, while blasting Hollahan’s arms with his pistol. Taking the MP5 with his as a precaution, Vincent entered the ground floor of the Crey owned warehouse. He turned quickly at the sound of the hammer of a revolver being brought into place just fast enough to be shot through the lung. A Huge red burst of pain surged through his entire being as he collapsed against the wall behind him. It was then that he saw the grim face of his former commander, Wolf-Alpha.
“If you had just followed orders this wouldn’t have happened. Now your going to bleed to death like the traitorous dog you are.” He said with a strange cruel grin on his face.
At this point, Vincent began to black out, unable to process what was going on around him. The last thing he could remember was an intense blast of cold and a huge flash of light before passing out.

(A Note of Explaination)
((You might be wondering what’s going on with the whole Alpha/Beta thing. Vincents Malta Unit is known as the Ivory Wolves, and the naming scheme follows much in the same way a wolf pack does.))

After this, he slept for days, and during this time, he dreamt of many things. But mainly of a teenage girl, for her part in the current situation was greater than any other....

The Rikti War
Chicago IL
"All Eyes forward." Said the commander, as the unit headed towards the ruined building. "Remember, our main responsibility is rescuing anyone still trapped inside. But be warned, intel has seen activity near the building."
The last sentence struck deep in Vincent’s mind, with an almost eerie tone.
"Ok, Vincent, Collins, head to the second floor, the rest of the team will search here and below"
"Yes Sir"
"Hey, Vincent over here, I've got two alive! A girl and a middle aged woman. Come over here and help me.... "
*Buzzt*
A Gurgle escaped Collins mouth as he fell in two, body burned in half by a Rikti plasma blade.
"BASTARD!"
Vincent Fired off a burst of rounds from his rifle, killing the Rikti Soldier.
Behind him he heard metal footsteps and the buzz of drones headed up the stairs
"Crap... this is bad..." He said, grabbing the woman and the girl.
"Here goes nothing..." He said as he leapt from the second story window, landing hard. He could hear muffled screams from inside the building, undoubtedly his comrades. It was then he noticed the blood on his shirt.
It was the woman’s, she was hurt more badly than he originally thought.
"Gotta get these two out of here...." He mumbled to himself.
"Besides... my comrades can take care of themselves right?" He thought to himself, after hearing another scream of pain.
He loaded the girls in the Jeep and took off towards the hospital. About halfway there the girl stirred from her sleep, but said nothing, only looking concernedly at the woman, who seemed to be getting worse by the minute. He arrived at the hospital only a mere 10 minutes after he left the ruin.
"There's a woman and a Girl in the back. I think they're related. The woman's hurt. Bad." he said rolling up his sleeves to reveal a large scar on his arm. "I'll help you carry her in."
"No good. The woman’s dead." With these words the girl started to cry and latched herself onto Vincent. "It's ok... your alive... I mean there's nothing we could have done right? Now go with the doctor, he'll make sure your ok." Vincent sighed and covered his eyes while leaning on the dashboard. "I mean there was nothing I could do... right?" He thought to himself, the sadness ridden face of the girl still in his mind.

And So, the Dream Continued
Chicago, a few weeks after the Rikti strike
It was dusk, and the small office was lit with a dull orange glow through the shutters. It may have been his imagination but Vincent could swear that there weren't any Gargoyles positioned on the roof of the adjecent building before he had arrived. Their shadows cast a heavy darkness against his seat in the room. Across from him was his Commander, who looked at him with a very grim look in his eyes.
"Listen Vincent, I'll be upfront with you. Your up for a sort of... Promotion if you will"
"Really now"
"Yes. I've had agents following you ever since that incedent where your squad was wiped out"
Vincent twitched at the mention of the events, but shrugged it off.
"You see, I'm not quite who you think.... I work for a group that has been well hidden until only recently" He said, pausing for a moment "The point I'm trying to make, is the Malta Group wants your membership."
"You realize this is treason. Don't you? I could walk right out of this room and get you arrested....." Glancing at the Gargoyles again he understood "But of course... you can't have that now can you. I so much as scratch my nose and your goons blow me away, Right?"
"I'm not sure what you mean, I have complete trust in you." Vincent saw a glimmer of metal from the mouth of one of the Gargoyles
"They're good," He said pointing to the Snipers "But they shouldn't be using scopes, it makes them too obvious... besides, for them this would be an easy shot"
The Commander looked dumbfounded, but wasn't completely suprised, he'd heard Vincent was quite observant.
"In any event... I accept... not like I have much choice"
