I just recently got an account with Netflix, an online movie rental service. After seeing the vast selection of movies they have I realized that Im in way over my head. I need some help finding some good movies and I know everyone here knows a really good movie or two. And for anyone not familiar with Netflix, they have probably everything ever released on DVD, that means classics, TV shows, independant, etc. So recommend away!

I really like to watch any kind of movie....except westerns. No westerns.

Leon, The Professional. Be sure to get the Deluxe edition. Any other version is butchered to hell and makes it look like Leon has sex with Matilda. He doesn't. The Deluxe edition is also about twice as long and twice as awesome.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Great philosophical flick.
i <3 huckabees. See above.
Yojimbo. One of the best samurai movies of all time.
Sanjuro. The other best samurai movie of all time.

You know, there is also a "Friends list" feature on Netflix. So if any people here have Netflix they can send you an invite to be added to their Friend list. Then you both can see what movies are in each others rental que.
Of course it helps if the other person likes the same kind of movies you do.
Just thought I would bring it up incase you find someone here that shares the same kind of tastes you do in movies.

And you just gotta see "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". That's pure gold.
Anything non-western? Hmmm... You've probably seen some of these but it can't hurt to mention on the off chance that you haven't.
American Beauty
Fight Club
United States of Leland (This movie is great! Like a cross between Donnie Darko and American Beaty.)
Unbreakable (Being a super hero fan, you gotta have seen this.)
Mullholland Drive (My favourite Lynch film. Great atmosphere. Must be watched in absolute silence.)
On the lighter side:
Orgazmo (I think you'll get a kick out of this one :D)
Harvey (Anyone who's seen Donnie Darko will find this old classic very amusing)
Hm, there's probably a lot more I'm just not remembering at the moment.

Comedies:
Ghostbusters - possibly the most quotable movie of all time
The Man With One Red Shoe - while it's pretty much typical in terms of plot and acting, it's one of the few movies that ever made me laugh out loud
Time Bandits - a great Terry Gilliam (Monty Python) movie. Monty Python in tone, and yet not Monty Python
Blazing Saddles - Mel Brooks' best. (Although History of the World Part I is also a good choice)
All of Me - while normally I find Steve Martin silly, this is just a good movie every time I watch it
Sci-Fi:
Dark City - IMHO same story as The Matrix and better. But maybe that's just because I saw it first
Buckaroo Banzai - required watching for anyone who wants to get the "in jokes" all their sci-fi geek friends are telling
2001 - it makes no sense, but it's still one of the most important sci-fi films of all time
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - another one you may not have had a chance to look at
Crazy Stuff:
Shattered - even I didn't see the ending coming, and I usually see right through plot twists
A Boy and his Dog - bizarre post-apocolyptic wasteland type thing with a telepathic dog
Brazil - Terry Gilliam again, with a version of Orwell's 1984 that is better than 1984
Escape from New York - If you don't know who Snake Plisskin is, then you need to rent this movie
Big Trouble in Little China - over the top camp, with a hero that is quite literally the biggest idiot ever portrayed in cinema :D

The Magnificent Seven is basically Seven Samurai with the complexity stripped out, but it's still a good watch.
Unbreakable, definately. One of my favourite superhero movies, and definately my favourite Shyamalan movie.

Hmm. Many great ones have been listed, but might I also suggest:
Bubba Ho-Tep
The Hidden Fortress (one of my favourite not-yet-mentioned Akira Kurosawa films)
Stalag 17 (a good WWII era flick- Hogan's Heroes was based loosely on it, though it's not a comedy)
THX 1138
Goodfellas
Carlito's Way (the CoH gang NPC's sometime use a quote from this film)
Office Space
The Minus Man
Outland

Office Space is a MUST! Others that you may not have seen:
Chronicles of Riddick - amazing sci -fi thriller sequel to pitch black. The plot and story line are just incredible because the story is about an anti-hero who just wants to be left alone but ends up being caught in something much larger. Some say even his destiny.
Arsenic and Old Lace - an old Cary Grant movie (don't know if I spelled his name right) its halarious!
Army of Darkness - the very first original one with Bruce Campbell. The second remake one is really good for a laugh though too.
Scary movie 3 - flat out funny, my favorite of the series
It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world - an all time classic with a bunch of huge stars during the 60s or 70s. I can't remember which time period. It features stars of that era such as; Milton Berle, Sid Caesar (he also played the Joker in the old old batman movie), Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn, Phil Silvers, Terry-Thomas, Jonathan Winters, and short clips with Don Knotts, Jerry Lewis and the Three Stooges. The laughs don't stop in this one.
Mr. Hollands Opus - great inspirational movie about a simple band director who makes a great difference in many people's lives in his community and school
Rudy - come on, this is a must see. It features Shawn Astin (Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings), and is about a small town nobody who fights impossible odds and makes it onto the Notre Damn football team.
Patch Adams - funny, and moving film staring Robin Williams. About a man who goes from a severe depression patient to striving for his dream to become a doctor to help people.

I think that stripping down is actually M7's strength. It makes it a much starker, simpler, story. Sort of a legend instead of a real story.

Hmm.....
Shaun of the Dead
Metropolis (anime version)
Armitage: Dual Matrix
Ghost in the Shell

O Brother, Where Art Thou
The Goonies
National Security
I'm sure I'll think of some more.....

Secondhand Lions. The messages of the movie are deep and powerful and profoundly true. This is my favorite movie, period.
Mister Roberts - WWII Navy movie... but not your typical war movie.
The Magnificent Seven is absolutely excellent.
Frequency. It's totally impossible but the plot twists and the way time paradoxes are handled are great.
The Usual Suspects, because it has TWO mind-bending plot twists.
The Sixth Sense, again for a mind-blowing plot twist.
That's all off the top of my head right now.

If you can find a copy for less then 120$ US ... I suggest picking up Split Second (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105459/). Early 90s Rutger Hauer Sci-Fi movie ... one of the most overlooked sci-fi monster flicks EVER. Really really good.
Amoeba Man

A lot of good movies named already. Here are a few that haven't been mentioned.
The Shawshank Redemption (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111161/)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082971/)
The Sting (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070735/)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057012/)
Se7en (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114369/)
L.A. Confidential (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119488/)
I think all of these movies are great. I could put in any of these movies at any given time and watch it. Enjoy what ever movies you end up watching. :D

Oh man yeah! O Brother, Where art thou? is incredibly halarious.
The main characters of the story are driving madly down a country rode with an infamous outlaw riding with them. They have just robbed a bank and are being chased by the police, the outlaw is firing his tommy gun at the cops giving chase when the outlaw notices some cows in a pasture coming up. The outlaw proceeds to say, "Hmmm Cows...I hate cows." The outlaw then proceeds to blast bullet holes the cows as they pass by, the outlaw laughing madly the whole time.
The outlaw was the infamous baby face george nelson :D.

Earnest Saves Christmas! :chuckle:
But seriously folks...
Definitely start with The Killer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097202/) (which used to be my favorite movie of all time until Spider-Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0145487/) trumped it). It's the very best work you'll find of both John Woo and Chow Yun Fat, offering multi-leveled characters and hyperkinetic action scenes. If you like that, also check out Hard-Boiled (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104684/), another Chow/Woo collaboration with a slightly more "Hollywood"-ish feel.
If you're liking the Hong Kong action movie trend, next up we have Drunken Master II (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111512/), which in the States was released as "The Legend of Drunken Master". If you see no other Jackie Chan movie, this is the one to see. It's utterly amazing. (If you don't like subtitles, get Shanghai Noon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0184894/). It's the best American Jackie Chan movie ever made.)
Beyond that, well I'll just give you a quick rundown of some of my personal favorite movies, in alphabetical order (no links here cause that's going to take too much time):
* Aliens
* Army of Darkness
* Boogie Nights
* Brotherhood of the Wolf (a.k.a. Le Pacte Des Loup)
* Dodgeball
* Fight Club
* Get Shorty
* The Mask of Zorro
* The Matrix
* The Princess Bride
* Raiders of the Lost Ark
* Se7en
* This is Spinal Tap
* Tombstone (I know you said no westerns, but this is the exception!)
Glancing over at my DVD collection, here's some other really good movies:
* Blade
* Blind Fury
* Clueless
* Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
* Don't Say a Word
* Equilibrium
* Galaxy Quest
* The Others
* Minority Report
* Pirates of the Caribbean
* Pitch Black
* 12 Monkeys
Oh, and if you like Cary Grant (who doesn't?), Arsenic and Old Lace (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036613/) is wonderful, but don't forget North by Northwest (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053125/)!

Eh, I'm too lazy to read through all of the other suggestions, so I suppose I'll add a few that most likely won't be there. (Mostly Zombie movies.)
Versus- Crazy japanese zombie action. Most people told the director that there was no way it would work as a live action movie. (I accidently stole this movie from the rental place when I moved....)
Junk- Another japanese zombie movie. It involves robbers, the yakuza and the police all ending up trapped in an abandoned government facility filled with zombies, good fun.
28 days later- British Zombie movie. Very well done.
Evil Dead 1&2, the first two movies in the evil dead trilogy (Army of Darkness is the last one)
The Salton Sea- Movie about an undercover drug cop. Don't remember it too well, but I liked it.
The Returner- Japanese action movie about time travelers.
Shark Skin Man, Peach Hip Girl- Oh look, another Japanese movie, this ones a strange crime caper.
And if you want to see something very odd.... pick up Suicide Club. That movie was Messed up.

I can't recommend movies the ones listed here seem pretty good already. I just reopened my Netflix account last month and already have over 400 movies in queue and well over half of them are Jap Animation. Netflix has the largest selection of Japanesse Animation I have ever seen anywhere.
