Here is a small section of my current desktop:

I don't like the block of color around the Icon name letters.(circled) How can I make it go away so that only the letters remain? I've fiddled with the appearance settings but can only manage to change the block to another color.

Yeah, I'm a dummy when it comes to stuff like this.

Get Desktop Achitect, you can mod all of your settings with this free desktop theme tool.
Or you could get tweak UI, that will do it too.
Or you could do what I do and hide all your desktop Icons, I hates me a cluttered desktop, me does.

1)Right click on your desktop and choose properties.
2)Choose the appearance tab.
3)Item: Desktop - click the box with the color, change the color to whatever you like.
4)Click OK.

I think she wants transparent, Tweak UI is a very nice thing to have, a little complicated but it might do the job.

As you can see. :P

Kin or Thunder, or whoever..... That's the only way to do what I want? Getting some program? No way to do it through Windows?

Yea, if you want to mess with the registry (trust me you don't)
Tweak UI is pretty useful for other stuff too, it won't go to waste, Sally.

Microangelo is a bit of an old program but it will let you do the same thing, plus create your own icons and cursors and all that fun stuff.

What version of Windows are you using? I'm on XP and it does it automatically.

XP Home. Back when we first got the thing, I remember we changed the color to green for some reason or other to match a new desktop picture. Ever since, it has only allowed a color change, not a color removal.

Yeah, Tweakui is a nice lil app.
Like others, I have no icons on my desktops.

However, to be helpful is our goal... so click (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-137) me :)

bpphantom's link does provide a solution, however also check to make sure that under the arrange icons by section of the desktop right click window, that "lock web items on desktop" is NOT checked, as that sometimes can cause the problem.

I can't take all the credit. I typed icon text transparency into the Windows XP Help search and got a page mentioning the exact problem.
