Bush Takes Responsibility for Blunders By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer
Tue Sep 13,10:20 PM ET

WASHINGTON - President Bush for the first time took responsibility Tuesday for federal government mistakes in dealing with Hurricane Katrina and suggested the calamity raised broader questions about the government's ability to handle both natural disasters and terror attacks.

"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government," Bush said at a joint White House news conference with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

"And to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility. I want to know what went right and what went wrong," said Bush.

Facing sharp criticism and the lowest approval ratings of his presidency, Bush scheduled a speech to the nation from Louisiana for Thursday evening. It will be his fourth trip to the devastated Gulf Coast since the storm struck two weeks ago.

It was the closest Bush has come to publicly faulting any federal officials involved in the hurricane response, which has been widely criticized as disjointed and slow. Some federal officials have sought to blame state and local officials for being unprepared to cope with the disaster.

Sen. Mary Landrieu (news, bio, voting record), D-La., welcomed Bush's conciliatory remarks. "Accountability at every level is critical, and leadership begins at the top," she said.

Other Democrats were less charitable.

"The season has come for Americans to look homeward ... instead of continuing to spend billions of dollars in Iraq," said Sen. Robert C. Byrd (news, bio, voting record), D-W.Va.

And Louisiana's Democratic governor, Kathleen Blanco, accused the Federal Emergency Management Agency of moving too slowly in recovering the bodies. The dead "deserve more respect than they have received," she said at state police headquarters in Baton Rouge.

Meanwhile, R. David Paulison, in his first full day on the job as acting FEMA director, told reporters in Washington the government would step up its efforts to find more permanent housing for the tens of thousands of Hurricane Katrina survivors now in shelters.

"We're going to get those people out of the shelters, and we're going to move and get them the help they need," Paulison said.

Bush selected him to replace Michael Brown, who resigned on Monday after being recalled as the top onsite disaster-relief coordinator. Brown, a Republican lawyer with little previous disaster-management experience, drew fierce criticism for his handling of the crisis.

Paulison, a career firefighter with 30 years of rescue experience, said he was busy "getting brought up to speed." Bush promised him in a Monday night phone call that he would have "the full support of the federal government," Paulison said.

The storm displaced a million people, destroyed large areas of cities and communities and heavily damaged roads, bridges, canals and oil and natural gas facilities.

Bush's acceptance of responsibility came in response to a reporter's question on whether the United States was capable of handling another terrorist attack, given its halting and widely criticized response to Katrina.

"That's a very important question," Bush said. "And it's in our national interest that we find out exactly what went on — so that we can better respond."

"I'm not going to defend the process going in, but I am going to defend the people who are on the front line of saving lives," he added. "I also want people in America to understand how hard people are working to save lives down there in not only New Orleans, but surrounding parishes and along the Gulf Coast."

Is this the first time EVER that he admitted mistakes?! I'm stunned! I'm.. awed! Speechless.. If its not the first time, someone please point it out to me, and I'll at least have a tiny amount of respect for the guy!

He can afford to admit mistakes now because he cannot be re-elected.

He apologized for going into Iraq without proof too right?

So this means we can expect his letter of resignation by Monday morning, right?

"Responsibility" doesn't mean much when you don't have any real consequences. Which he doesn't.

It will be interesting, however, to watch all the conservatives who defended him and claim he wasn't at fault now try to backpedal and spin in a different direction.

I'm sure now he's "Taking responsibility as Commander in Cheif, and trying to move past the political propaganda so that the country can focus on those affected by the hurricane."
And Sue Dibny was killed by Dr. Light.

Ok, 5 days before the hurricane hit the president offered federal support the govenor of LA said no. The mayor of NO was told to evacuate 5 days before the hurricane, he didnt. Bush cleared funds for relief efforts long before the hurricane hit land.

The only reason any of this is Bush's fault is cause he is the boss. The people the ****ed up are the Elected officials in LA. But one thing you learn in the military is that regardless of who does it, the boss is the one who always gets in trouble.

exactly Half-Life The guy who's fault it was stepped down and they replaced him. Hell if I can remember who it was... but yes Bush is taking blame because he has to. If he cant get enough respect for other officials to listen to him, or even order them to do something, then it most definitely IS his fault no matter what.

I am not going to argue any of the points that we have been arguing for 2 weeks now. I am appreciative of the president taking responsibility for the federal government failures, and I am glad to see that he is taking a step forward in this catastrophe. For the first time in his presidency, he has apologized to the American people and that, regardless of the consequences, is something I can respect him for.

I like the way John Steward reported it on the Daily Show, which basically emphasised just that, "The President actually APOLOGIZED for making a MISTAKE???"

Whatever you want to say about any other mistakes he may or may not have made, though, saying basically, "I'm in charge, and this happened on my watch" took a lot of guts. I think the people who are expressing their astonishment are, in their own way, saying they're impressed.

Of course, as Sally pointed out, he's not running for re-election any more. A lot of Presidents have gotten guts at that point. :D

You don't want that to happen. If it did, DICK CHENEY would be President.

Talk about out of frying pan and into the fire. One good roll in the hay would make Dennis Hastert the President of the United States. Most people in this country have NFI who he is, much less what his political beliefs are.

No thanks, I'll take the idiot I know over the alternatives (cuz with my luck, Cheney would live to see the end of the term  ).

Sally hit the nail on the head though. What we'll see in the next few years is the leading Republican candidates distancing themselves from an unpopular President. John McCain started 3 years ago. :P
