View Full Version : The City Watch

We'd talked a bit about taking a different tack with this team. I wrote this little diddie as a kind of suggestion towards the direction we might take:
http://users.adelphia.net/~dmorgan78/images/logo1.jpg
In their own words:
“I think the natural tendency of a person who is…special in the way that we are is to shy away from the public…and that’s a mistake. The very nature of what we do requires openness; the kind of power that we wield requires scrutiny. Those that call themselves superheroes and hide in the shadows may do so out of modesty, but that sort of secrecy only breeds fear in the public eye. Everything we are, everything we do is out in the open. And that facilitates understanding between us and the public, an understanding that’s pretty desperately needed in modern times.”
-Alex Zafiro, The King of Spades
“In a lot of ways, the City Watch is really about living up to the ideal of a hero. Being in the eye of publicity as we are, you are forced to be a role model. Any other option would be letting down-well the inclination is to say letting down the children, but that’s a cliché and not really the whole story. From a position of strength, you really dictate an entire system of morality. Using your strength indiscriminately creates a whole hierarchy of weak and strong, cruel and kind. But in using it wisely, you can level the playing field, make sure that men and women are judged on their own merits and not the sheer brutality of their natures.”
-William Sullivan, The Olympian
“You can look at the modern day super hero as a sort of modern mythology. They are either gods, swooping down on golden wings from their fortress in the sky, or demons, erupting up from the bowels of the city to wreak their vengeance. There’s just currently not that much room in between. I think the City Watch fills that void by providing personalities that the public can both look up to while at the same time retaining strong community ties.”
-Egon McFlynt, Randomus
“Look, I’m not going to tell you about ideals and all that jazz. But I can tell you this: my powers come from the earth itself, and the more people hurt the earth, pour crap down their drains, plow down forests to make subdivisions, the weaker I get. If I just go around preaching about recycling and turning your lights off, nobody listens to me. But as a member of a group like the Watch, my actions speak louder than words. Strange as it sounds, I can be a better environmentalist by putting the fear of God into some punk with a gun than I can by trying to explain to people about ecosystems.”
-Frank J Allen, Goldstar
“Look, I’m not saying that I only do this for the chicks. I mean getting chicks is great. But I could get chicks if I didn’t have superpowers. What, don’t you believe me? Say, are you free Tuesday night?”
-David Dorth, Electrical Burn
“To put it simply, I think this was the most ‘American’ bunch out there that isn’t actually run by the government. The combination of loyalty, duty, individuality and honor in this group…well I’m just proud to serve with them, let me just say that.”
-Cpt. John McRae, United States Army(ret); Yankee Fighter
“I know it’s not ‘cool’ to really be into being a superhero, like tourists here looking up at all the tall buildings, but it just never gets old for me. It’s fun as hell.”
-Thomas Richards, Head Rush
Who is the City Watch?
The City Watch is a group of superheroes that does not shy away from the public eye. They are an organization funded through commercial enterprises, such as the sales of merchandise, books and the recent incursion into the television market through their CW1 mix tapes.
Who leads the City Watch?
Egon McFlynt, aka Randomus. With Goldstar, King of Spades, the Olympian and…Electrical Burn the five form a loose sort of board of directors.
What is the purpose of the City Watch?
The City Watch strives to protect the people of Paragon City while upholding a strong moral example and maintaining a tangible presence in the community. The City Watch is also a non-profit organization, the proceeds of which go towards increasing the effectiveness of individual members.
What does it take to become a member of the City Watch?
The City Watch does not accept persons of questionable morality, heroes who are known to kill their opponents indiscriminately, heroes who are unable to live up to the heroic standards of the Watch and heroes with costumes that appear to have their roots in a particularly psychedelic KISS set. Heroes with no sense of humor will not be able to understand a thing that we say.
If I didn't provide a quote, it was because I had no idea what your character might say, or you don't have a crey profile and my tired brain didn't realize that the roster looked short.

Here's the quote I've written for Randomus. In my view it explains what The City Watch was always supposed to be, in my head. Things didn't quite turn out this way-- the reality show aspect ended up eclipsing the heroics. While I do still like the idea of a reality show, it's up in the air at this point.
"Historically, heroes were the link between men and gods. A kind of stepping stone, if you will. They were godlike, but still of man; Hercules is the best example of this that comes to mind. Half man, half god, all hero-- he represented a middle ground between the worshippers and the worshipped. Every mythology is full of these characters. Jesus, Buddha, Arjuna, they're everywhere.
In an increasingly agnostic age, people no longer turn to gods as the embodiements of ultimate power and authority. With the upper echelon missing, the heroes become the objects of worship. Even celebrities take on a holy caste, whether they deserve it or not. Most often, they do not. Heroes and celebrities deserve our respect, certainly, but they are not gods. They are not to be worshipped. In the minds of the masses, they have become inscrutible. They are not recognisable as human. Somewhere along the line, the heroes have forgotten that they exist to serve the people. Somewhere along the line, the people have forgotten this too. It has created an unbalanced power relationship.
That's where we come in. The City Watch aims to form a new link, a stepping stone between humanity and these new gods, these elevated heroes and celebrities. The so-called superheroes that overrun our cities are no different from the cashier at El Super Mexicano, or the men who clean our streets at night. The public has lost sight of this fact. The heroes have lost sight of this fact. In the minds of heroes, they ARE that inscrutable neo-god. It's time for the heroes to step forward and admit we're really not that special. We are not what you think we are. We are no different from you. By living openly in the public eye, devoid of 'secret identities' and that sheen of mystery that envelops so many other heroes, we hope to prove this to the viewing public. We are going to re-balance the scales."
- Egon McFlynt, AKA Randomus
Obviously it needs to be trimmed and edited, but that's the general idea.

Is there a recommended max size for images? I know that I'm guilty of tending to act a bit like Nature: Abhoring a vacuum and spreading out to fill all available space :P
I guess you could say that about a Starbucks building contractor, too *shrug*

Well, for the profile image, it's going to be pretty small. And we only have 10 megs of space overall, so if you're adding much more than a megabyte, stuff may get deleted. Don't look at the image galleries as permanent group storage space. I'm probably going to have to off load some of the graphics off site. (Goldstar's custom profile already takes up far too much room.)

I had an idea that involved starting the Watch from scratch (not dissolving the current one, just making new characters). Basically starting over with some alts and seeing if we can't generate more interest in it as a more alt-centric supergroup. It might be possible to dredge up interest on these forums or elsewhere (in-game, obviously), and heck, someone might even figure out where coldcut and Lorash went. Who knows. We could even do it on a different server.
The idea would be to have characters we all played at a set time, one or more nights a week, to make sure we all level up around the same speed and are guaranteed a team during that time slot. The Liberty League does this with The Liberty League Scouts, The Liberty League Defenders and META PETA, so I don't see why it couldn't work for us.
Just a rambling thought that's been running through my brain. I've missed playing with the old gang, and even though half the original members have disappeared... well, let me know your thoughts.

I'm willing to try the idea. I definately miss playing with you guys and I happen to have just created a guy I thought would fit well in City Watch but didn't think to play him much. But I'd love an excuse to try him out and build him up.
City Watch is a good idea and I think we can make it work. I mean, this is more than a slow time - that's true. But I know some of us are still around and haven't left the team and I know I don't plan to so there's something to build on. I'm willing to try this out and see where it goes. Even if it doesn't work to fully revive the Watch it sounds like it may be some fun.

CITY WATCH DISAPPEARS!
INVESTORS SCRAMBLE FOR MONEY, EXPLANATIONS
Tuesday, June 21st, 2005; Posted: 8:47 AM EST
PARAGON CITY, Rhode Island (PNN)-- A mysterious bright light at The Lookout has resulted in the disappearance of most of Reality TV Superheroes The City Watch. In the wake of this disaster, the franchise's stockholders search desperately for explanations and a new cash cow.
Following a decline in the popularity and profibility of the City Watch franchise, several members left the city to pursue other interests. The remaining few struggled to keep the show afloat, but profits plummeted and viewers left in droves for rival programs such as ATLAS TV and a website whose owner snuck a webcam into the Underground's sewer headquarters. Things looked bleak for The City Watch. It was hard to imagine it could get any worse.
Unfortunately for us all, it did. The City Watch has disappeared, along with the top ten floors of their skyscraper headquarters, The Lookout. Last night, a bright light dazzled heroes and villains alike at 2:43 AM. When it subsided, the top of the tower was missing. Rescue crews rushed into the building, but found it abandoned above the 30th floor. Those of the cast who had been living in the tower's penthouse suites were gone.
In a city known for temporal distortions and dimensional ruptures, this was not a strange occurence. So far, however, scientists have been unable to track the singularity that may have caused this event. For now, The City Watch is MIA.
Speculation on their message boards and other conspiracy theory sites all over the internet are alive with rumors that this is a publicity stunt. More die-hard fans maintain that The City Watch has ascended to heaven to sit alongside God in preparation for the Rapture.
This morning, City Watch Enterprises CEO Toshiro Kuwabatake held a press conference about the event and the rumors surrounding it. "Let me assure you all that this is no publicity stunt," Kuwabatake said. "Believe me. I only wish we had come up with something like this. As it is, the company is in a state of shock. Shareholders are scrambling to sell off their stock, fearing a complete crash in the wake of the disappearances." When asked if he was at all concerned about the fate of the heroes, Kuwabatake laughed. "Don't be ridiculous. Worry about The City Watch? Those guys are superheroes. They battle giant sewage monsters and repel interdimensional invasions every day before breakfast. Whatever has happened to them, they can handle it. I don't have to worry about them. I do have to worry about our profits."
Moments later, Kuwabatake shocked us with a stunning revelation. "That's why those of us who run the business have decided to take a more active role in generating revenue. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to announce the advent of a new reality show: The City Watch Executives! Several of us dusty old number crunchers will be suiting up in custom-made costumes-- or in some cases donning our old superhero guises-- and taking to the streets to fight crime."
Once order was regained, Kuwabatake continued with his explanation. "Trends have shown that The City Watch was most popular when it was just starting out, a fledgeling operation running on hope and spirit. We're going to re-capture that magic by bringing the public along as we go out into the world and learn how to be superheroes. We know everything there is to know about economics, marketing and management. It's time learned about the superhero business. Join us every Tuesday and Saturday as we learn the ropes of Paragon City's most popular passtime!"
At this point, Kuwabatake declined any further questions and adjourned the conference. Aides appeared to hand out flyers advertising the new team and its showtimes on Channel Four.
Is this a hoax? Was the whole act a publicity stunt as the rumors say? It appears these questions will have to wait, at least until tonight.
(Questions? Comments? Post them here.)

TopHat and I still team up a lot in random groups and in Tempestria, so I still see him. But I miss being in The Watch big time.
I have some alts going already, but I would like to try and squeeze one in for this. Especially since you are trying to do this on specific days, I think that will help a lot. That way I know I can play my City Watch character on those days.
I have room on Virtue to make a new character, so I'm up for that or anywhere.
Actually, Fantasmo has an older brother who is a speedster and he used to have his own Super Team called The Light Riders, so he may fit in nicely. His powers are Kinetics and Energy Blast.

I have a character made up based on the CEO, he's a katana/dark scrapper. I'll probably replace Fight Guy or Major Pwnz if we end up on Virtue, mainly because with this alt there is a guarantee that he will be played on a regular basis.
As long as you can make up a reason for the character to have been a desk jockey of some kind at City Watch Enterprises, you're good to go. Typically the characters will be Natural or Technology, though I put in that bit about "donning our old costumes" to leave room for retired superheroes of any kind.

For my character, I am thinking something like this:
He came from Indiana to Paragon City to start a new life. He is having a mid life chrisis. He gets in trouble on the streets right away and is saved by The City Watch. Fantasmo gets him a job as an exec.
One day, he goes up to visit The City Watch at The Lookout. He touches a video game after Electrical Burn has been playing, gets a jolt. Randomus pats him on the back, he stumbles and falls into Omniwave's body suit. The energy flows through him and is combined with the electricity of EB. His powers are manifested from the turn of events. This happens to be the day before The City Watch disappear.
His name is Hoosier Hero.

How about Molten Gale, Solar Breeze, Solar Storm, Starwind, Cinder Wind, Cinder Storm? Something along those lines.
Sounds like an interesting idea, Fantasmo. What kind of person is he? Toshiro, for example, is a ruthlessly efficient businessman with a dry sense of humour and an opportunistic personality.
He was an Indiana high school basketball star when he was younger. He then went to college and got his Masters in Business. He went on to be a top executive for the Indianapolis 500 Raceway Park. He is the guy that seems to know everyone and rubs elbows with high society. He is a good talker and likes to be funny and crack jokes.

Solar Winds. I like that idea. Toy Maker, out in the Field for the First time. Not a showman. A Yes man. A man who keeps his noise in the books, and comes up with great ideas that someone else gets credit for. Work hard, and keep your noise clean, thats what he dad always said. If you do a good job, someone will notice you. Well, they noticed him now. Yes sir, boy, would my dad be proud. John Persivile Hackworth Jr. Finnaly a chance to really show off my work. It was all worth it Dad.

Just moved to Spokane, plus I discovered Neverwinter Nights, which is a hell of a timesink if you've just come across three years worth of modules to play. Think my COH account's still actually active. (Rich kid perogative. Should have put all this energy into fighting crime rather than video games. Oh well.) Also been a tad disillusioned with COH, but I'm willing to check in with the Getaway Kid, or possibly even Dr. Miracle.

I loved Darkwing Duck. The name "Hoosier Hero" is hilarious. For some reason is makes me think of that scene at the end of "In & Out". "Hoosier... what is the definition of a hoosier?"
A Yes Man finally getting his day sounds good to me. Kind of a timid, background hero-- perfect for a Controller type.
Hey Coldcut. I was wondering where you were! Good to know things are okay and all. There's no pressure to get back into the game if you're not enjoying it, this is just an attempt to get back to our roots, as it were.

OK I'm going to make my Hero tonight when I get off work. Going to stick him on Virtue. Going to just do the Outbrake, and try out the starting powers. That way if I don't like the power sets, I can kill him and start over. =)
Only issue I have: MY RL Sucks. I'm lucky this week and have lots of time. But until I get this new job 100% I am forced to keep my crappy BB gig. So they like to force me to work on the weekends, so when did we want to try these weekly fun times?

Sure, I can play him on other nights to keep up, no problem.
I think we should make these guys join the already established City Watch. It makes more sense for them to take The City Watch name, since it is already famous and they are trying to keep things going. That way people on the streets still say, "look it's The City Watch, we are saved!"

This sounds fun! I have a low-level alt on Virtue. Her background in a nutshell is that she was a high-powered Hollywood agent and colossal b*tch. She's a mind/emp controller and rose to power in Hollywood by using her powers to manipulate people in the film industry: making young actresses "sick" right before important screen tests, telepathically planting ideas into peoples' heads for which actors to cast in which films, etc.
She is/was also a thrill-seeker and used to be an avid collector of high-performance motorcycles and automobiles. She loves speed. At the height of her power in Hollywood, people feared being on this temperamental diva's bad side. Until the secret to her power was found out.
When it was discovered that her success came from manipulating practically the entire film industry using her mutant mind control powers, a huge lawsuit was brought against her. She was tried criminally and civilly, and lost both suits. The courts ordered her to pay huge sums in damages and fines. Her mansions, motorcycles, cars, everything were liquidated. In addition she was forced to do community service: to use her powers for good. They sent her to Paragon City and registered her as a heroine on court order. The situation has her a bit bitter, but she grudgingly does her do-gooding.
It might be interesting to have her be a part of this. I would imagine she might have gotten work with the City Watch production executives shortly before the CW disappeared, unbeknownst to her parole officer. It might be interesting and fun to have her have to keep this a secret, and try to build up a new power base in the entertainment industry, all the while maintaining a facade of "heroine" for the benefit of the courts.
Just a thought. She's level 6 or 7 now. I dunno. Comments?

Certainly a fun idea for the concept there. I was hoping we could all start at level 1 together, but that might not be possible depending on who can play the week we start. Which, ideally, is this week.
Maybe we can say we'll officially start the team-up on Sunday, and we have until then to get our new alts to level 6 or so? Thoughts?

Think of the headlines - 'Bad Girl turns her life around to save the City' This could give us that younger 'edgy' group. And having a real hero might give us more 'street cred' You know all those Gen Xtremers... =P

I made a character the other day called "Etiquette" (and yes somehow I got that name) - He could be perfect for this.
Bassically he's a spoilt rich boy, brought up completely sheltered from the world outside, who believes the riff raff of society, the peasants, drug dealers, gang members all 'lower the tone' in what used to be a nice city before the Rikti War, and that the poor are the main cause of crime. He thinks no one has any manners or lives up to social etiquette anymore. Of course he's completely blind to the evils of multi-national corporations and the fact that money corrupts.
His catchphrases?
"You wait til I call my lawyers!"
"Not the suit!! NOT THE SUIT!!"
"...You're in trouble when Daddy hears about this."
He could have been The City Watch's lawyer before donning... well, it's not so much as a costume as a sparkling white suit...

This definitely sounds like a colorful bunch. :) Oh, btw, my character's name is Vivian Sterling. I don't mind waiting with Viv for a while until people catch up. I created her a while ago (as has been pointed out, soloing with a controller is slow business), and thought this SG idea might be, serendipitously, a good fit for her concept.
And just so you know, she's not a "legit" heroine. In the eyes of the public she is, maybe, but her Hollywood downfall made national headlines and she's still just as b*tchy as ever (if not moreso, given that she resents having to be a "good guy," and live in "squalor"--i.e. how the average middle-class Paragon Citizen has to live.), so she's really the heroine everyone loves to hate.
I'm still trying to get used to playing a mean person. I'm so scared people will think it's *me* being that way. Just remember, it's all RP, okay? :tomato:

Ok threw together a little bit of a history for Alicia Gunn also know as Lady Gun.
Only child of a freelance bounty hunter. Mother and unborn sibling where killed in a car accident when she was five. Her father raised her to take of the business. She absorbed all the knowledge he had to teach. She had a special knack for working with numbers. She was away at college, majoring in accounting, minoring in business, when a bounty got the better of dad. The bounty turned out to have recently come into some superpowers. The courts ruled it involuntary manslaughter, made no difference in the end. His powers comsumed him less then three months later. She graduated with honors a year later and went to work in Paragon City as an accountant. She continued to do bounty hunting on the side though most of what she did was locate the bounty and pass the information on to the bounty agencies so they could send out their hunters. One of the agencies she works for is run by the Wilde family.

Well, Bubba, the Mail Room Manager has been created on Virtue, andd he's level 5 now. Redneck was unaccepable, and Red Neck was taken, so he's starting his career as the Backwoodsman. Minor history..
He grew up in the back woods of Arkansas, and killed his first dear when he was 10. Surprisingly, he was the first in his family to actualy complete High School. He could have had a decent job in construction back home, but he wanted more rom life. So, he headed to the Big City. His first job was as a delivery boy in the mailroom of the very company he's at now. At first, he had high ambitions of 'rising through the ranks,' but found that he was quite comfortable as the manager. So, that's where he's been for the past 12 years, occationally taking Opening Day off for the various hunting seasons. He's savvy enough to be connected to what's going on in the company, but is happy to stay outsie of the politics. Not to mention that he makes the best elk jerky you've ever tasted.

I like it, Lanzlo!
I've created a Crey report for Toshiro. I can't post the pictures from work, but I will late tonight, after class. The report contains the history of City Watch Enterprises (at least over the past few years) as well as information on The Executive Edge. It may help the rest of your with your backstories.
Check it out here (http://www.creyindustries.com/viewhero.php?id=15621).

Darn, I wish I would have been able to meet up with you guys last night. I was on for a little bit earlier in the evening, but then was not able to get back on until late.
I plan on getting back in tonight sometime and working on Hoosier Hero some more.
Redcat, I think Lady Gun would make a nice edition to the team.
With The City Watch being so alive again, we need our own forum, don't we?

I like the idea of us getting our own thred again. We are Old School. And we have a much larger Time Share then anyone else on the networks!

I added him to the SG on the crey site, along with Lady Gun.
If any of the rest of you make Crey reports, let me know and I'll get them added.

All right, I entered Bubba in to the Crey database here. (http://www.creyindustries.com/viewhero.php?id=15627) I don't have any pics of him (yet), but they will go up when I do.

Made a Crey Report for Gold Brand (http://www.creyindustries.com/viewhero.php?id=15629) with the origin I've come up with so far. If anyone has any suggestions or comments on it I'd be happy to hear them.

So any idea for a name? Man this is harder then coming up with an Idea for a guy.... Fire and Stroms..... :sarcasm:
I haven't read the whole thread (and I'll probably be renewing my account again this weekend/friday night...weekends are boring without you guys) and you probably have a name, but here's one:
Illigitimate kid? Gay. As in...Homosexual Gay. The Flaming Intern.
boo ya! :)

Miracle.
I'm a DM of a server for NWN. Have been for a couple years. I've recently went on hiatus from that and moved on to a different one where i'm just a player: Dragon Coast: Erithorn's Might (http://www.dragoncoast.org)
DM'ing can be fun, but it can be frustrating, too. It's nice to just let go and play again.

Ok..finally made it through the thread.
Friday night after work I'll renew my account and create an Invuln/Mace tanker caled:
Number Cruncher! (pending, the name might be taken...I could go with Number Crusher): Power-tie wearing Accountant who hung up his hero suit at the end of the Rikti War. Taking the company memo to heart (and seeing this as a possible "fast track" out of the Accounting pool (he was a much better Hero than an Accountant)) he signed on board the new team.
Figure an iron-helmed and gauntletted (is that even a word?) guy in a suit with a Mace :) I've never used a mace, so we'll see how well it works.
Playtimes: I can be available from 6-9pm central (7-10 eastern) during the week, and anytime untill midnight on friday and saturday nights (9/10 on sunday nights).
I usually get up around 4am, so my playdays'll start early on the weekends. ;)
If we have too many tanks, I could switch concepts, as i basically just pulled this out of my ass. :)
The only thing I could think of to stay away from is Scrappers. I level too fast with Scrappers ;)

Welcome back Lorash! Thanks for coming. Number Cruncher is an awesome idea. That will make 3 tanks, but Gold Brand is a Fire Tank which is basically a Heavy Scrapper. We don't have a Defender at the moment, but I'm sure we can entice one over at some point.
We now have a real supergroup forum again. Please move further discussion there (http://www.cohguru.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=97).
I'll try and get a roster together, give me a bit.

BIG O!! Glad to see your coming back man! Be good to team with you again.
By the way, I just bought NWN last week. I'm still in the learning process. I will have to check out the server you play on. Let me know the name of the characters you use so I can find you. You can PM if you would like, so we don't hijack the thread.

Randomus, it's Vivian Sterling
Are you looking for her on Virtue, or Crey? Because if it's Crey I haven't written one yet.

We do have a defender. One of the gals is a defender. I grouped with The Movie Agent, and the other gal was the defender... argh... Agent was Val... can't remember the name of the other one, but it was funny seeing 2 controllers and a defender running around taking out Hellions. And me the entire time going 'Yes, ma'am.' 'You are so right, we should do that ma'am'... hehehe
