Just saw this on Kotaku:

http://kotaku.com/5692084/this-isnt-character-creation-its-more-amazing-than-that

Man, how amazing is that? I thought APB's CC looked great, but this is awesome. After CoH, every other game with a CC always left me craving for more and better customisation, even Dragon Age and Mass Effect. But this? This takes the crown.

Looks great.

I've found that there's a fairly fine line between customization and ZOMGJustLetMePlay&NotLookLikeADingus! ;) This is pretty heavy, but previously everyone was just a head so...

I haven't touched Eve in so long, I can't remember if I actually touched it! But yeah, both this and Earth and Beyond, which I do remember, just floating heads. All that time spent in the CC and you never see the body; you are motly in spaceships!

But this is damn impressive. Just wondering if there is a need/reason for such a CC in Eve.

...which when you consider EVE will soon let players leave their ships and wander around space stations is really something else.

*cough*

Actually, you don't remember Earth & Beyond at all if that's what you think. E&B allowed you (nay, required you) to leave your ship regularly. How else were you going to get "jobs"?

Now, I remember Earth and Beyond, which is part of my main gripe here. Yeah, you could leave your ship to go on space stations, but it didn't seem to be enough for me. Basically, you were in an instance and all one really did was go to one room to trade/sell, go to another room to buy and then there was a bar that I didn't see too many people RPing in.

Well, there were attempts but even then, things seem so "isolated". You couldn't go down to the planet's surface or the outside of the station.

I am thinking this is going to be exactly the same in the new Eve. Most people won't leave their ship if they can help it.

I am not saying RP can't be done, but I'd like to Explore in that form, too. I mean, even in Earth and Beyond, we get a great CC and then...I hardly experienced it. I did roam some stations initially, but more and more, I just stayed in the ship. All the fruits of the CC were not well represented in-game, IMO.

This may just be my experience, but I saw more people just "go here, then there, then back to the ship" than in most games. Not many hung around. It was a let-down after the initial time spent in the CC to not really see/use all these things people worked on and mostly see/communicate in ships, even in Earth and Beyond.

Finally got annoyed at the "You must recreate your character for the portrait to display" message and went to the CC and was vera impressed. I love that "Skeletal link" of the body parts, I love the real boobs, very impressive I hope they look that good and unique whe we can leave ship. Though nudity would be nice ;)

I hope the boobs look unique when they leave the ship, too.

Downloading it, myself, since I keep getting e-mails about it.

So, while there is an Eve Online post, it's from 2006 and its in the Asylum (yeah, I googled it. Wow, Black Razor and Powerhelm posted in that!).

This news doesn't pertain to the character creator (that seemed to went off well) as it does to microtransactions....which may or may not affect future such titles (CoH) going f2p, but...

anyway, I posted someone's comment that seemed to cover just "WHY!?!?" this was. First up, the article!

Controversy brewing over EVE Online microtransactions

by Brendan Drain on Jun 21st 2011 10:00PM

http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/aurum.jpg
When we first heard that EVE Online was planning to add microtransaction options, players were most concerned with the effect of microtransaction items on gameplay. CCP was quick to reassure players that microtransactions would focus on vanity items for Incarna and no gameplay-affecting items would be released. Fast-forward to today, when the first phase of Incarna finally went live along with the new Noble Exchange cash shop. As promised, the store contained only vanity items for Incarna, starting with a series of alternative clothing options.

The one thing we didn't really think of while we worried about microtransactions affecting EVE's gameplay was price. The current prices on items in the Noble Exchange are far above typical microtransaction charges and an order of magnitude higher than expected. Items in the Noble Exchange are bought with a new currency called Aurum, 3500 of which can be created from one 30-day pilot's license (PLEX). With the price of PLEX set at around $19.95 US, players can expect to pay over $20 for a skirt, $25 for a blouse, and more than a whopping $68 for the much-desired ocular implant monocle.

In a bizarre twist, many of the clothing options for sale at the Noble Exchange actually cost more than real clothes of the same type. As PLEX can be bought from other players for ISK, however, most players will not be spending their own cash on these items. PLEX prices have already spiked to over 400 million each, putting the price of the monocle at over 1.3 billion ISK. CCP could not provide any more information on the issue, but we expect an issue this hot will prompt an announcement.

And the comment: I think it is a good point for the prices (the game DOES have an economist on staff) and is yet another indicator why this game is "off-the-rails" and very "meta" or "outside the game" than other MMOs.

Just think of the items in the noble exchange as high end exclusive fashion. It's not that hard to find clothing that costs as much as a ferrari in the real world. Exclusive items are worth what people are willing to pay for them, when marketing exclusive items at people who buy super carriers by the dozen, you can afford to charge a lot.

It should be worth keeping in mind that if they made the NEX items too cheap it would over inflate the value of plex and deflate the value of isk. Large fleet battles sound far less impressive when you hear about how they destroyed a fleet of 100 capital ships with an equivalent real world cost of $3.50.

My only beef with the character creator is that it doesn't allow you to make anything but heroin chic type figures, for females. This was literally the best I could do in three hours of futzing with sliders:

You know me. That's not nearly enough, uh, curvature. :( It looks "okay" clothed (the width of the hips is fine) but....

Whats your Corperation like? Do you have a website? Are you recruiting?

DAI is a capitalist corp with (business) ties to several powers in 0.0. We engage in combat PvP only when forced to, and market PvP every damn day. :P Once we make another 50 billion or so, we'll move into wormhole exploration (with other corps in our alliance). The corp itself is basically me and a few friends from another gaming community. It's a cool setup though. A few months ago, I was building ships for two alliances who were at war with each other. :chuckle: That happens a lot, actually. One reason I really love Incarna is because I can be sitting on the couch in my Captain's Quarters and news of sovereignty changes automatically comes in. I can then figure out how best to profit from that (if I have any contact with the winner or loser) or what to expect ("We need 9 Prophecies and like a dozen Domis").

But to answer your questions, no we don't have a website (kinda hard to live outside the grid, so to speak, when folks can just look you up), our killboard is password protected (don't want people knowing what we fly), and recruiting is heavily restricted. I can definitely point you to some awesome corps though. It really depends on what you want to do in the short term. At the beginning, you won't have the same needs as you will later on so the corp you join now is going to be temporary (more often than not). You'll join, enjoy some parts, dislike other parts, and then find another corp that fits what you like (and avoids what you dislike) and move on. It's a growth process, really.

Be happy to fly with ya though. We have an office in Charmerout (Gallente space) where a few of our corpmates are based out of, and Reni's there now too (mmmmm, kernite).

I would highly recommend you read this article (http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/17/eve-evolved-learning-to-let-go/) and take the advice in it to heart. It is absolutely, unequivocally, 100% truth. One reason I love EVE to death (and maintain four accounts in it) is because I can play it on my own terms. I set my goals (whatever they may be), I work toward them (with as much or as little effort as I want), and I accomplish them for me. Reni has been the Industrial Director for a corp that moved into 0.0 and I HATED it after the move. My primary motivation (making ISK in large quantities) was thrown into the trunk (not even the back seat) because of the demands of a corp with constant needs. All of my manufacturing slots were always full with stuff for the corp, I was always out mining (or leading mining ops) because we needed tons of resources to keep churning out ships and modules, and I rarely got to actually PLAY (ratting was out of the question). Luckily, I hadn't brought much stuff with me (most of what I had, I made after we got to 0.0) and I only brought the one character (the other three were left behind in empire space). So I just contracted everything to the corp, clone jumped back to my empire base and resigned (and quit playing, I was totally burnt out). Sadly, the corp folded shortly after that but c'est la EVE! Next time we move to 0.0, we're going to lease a dead-end system (from a large alliance, with security built into the rent) and mine/rat/build/marketeer to our heart's content.

Welcome to the sandbox. :)

Alright, kool, thank you. :) I'll definitely read the article and keep all that in mind. I played on a seperate character awhile back for a month, even joined up with a Corp whose alliance was at war with another so I kind of have an idea where I wanna go. But because I went with a different character this time, I'm just leaving my character idle for the time being to get some of the skills I want before I get started. Plus I forgot I had standard implants for all of my attributes so definitely gonna leave my character idle in Empire to speed up skill training till I'm in a spot where I don't care if I lose those implants. I died a lot when I was PvPing with the other Alliance. :P

What's your take on Monocle-Gate, Rem?

Also, I may try for Dust 514 when it comes out for PS3, although my take is that it'll eventually come to PC.

Okay, so I thought about what I wanna do in Eve and me and a friend of mine got this talking about Bounties on all the pirates out there. So I was thinking about eventually starting a Mercenary type Corperation that can be hired as Mercenary, Security Detail, and Bounty Hunting. Now how to make Bounty Hunting work without tresspassing is an interesting question... but luckily, rules can be broken. ;)

So I started up a second account, I wanna get into a Carrier as support so I will use her as a Jump Alt, and maybe get into industrial. I donno, but without further ado, here's...

Much ado about nothing, in my view. It's business and I realize that. That item had zero appeal to me so I didn't care it existed. In fact, most of the items in the NX don't appeal to me. Part of it is price and part of it is that I don't have enough emotion invested into my full avatars yet.

I'm all about businesses exploring new revenue streams, especially in MMOs. With only one exception, these games aren't really raking in the dough. They're profitable, sure, but it's not like the old days (like when Brad McQuaid bought a Ferrari from EQ's early success). If I like the products offered, I'll buy them. If not, I won't. It's as simple as that to me. Sure the monocle was grossly overpriced but if everything in the NX was priced similarly, their entire plan would die on the vine. Oooo, you sold 40 monocles! Awesome! I bet those sales don't come close to covering the development cost for that one item. I like how they tried to obfuscate the price of these things by making the PLEX to AUR conversion necessary. Didn't take but a minute for most people to figure out how much the real cost was.

That's a good lookin' girl. That vest wasn't available when I made Anaia. I'm not big on piercings (they've got enough metal lining their spines) but it's tastefully done.

And you can join a merc corp to learn how it's done. Not all mercs actively PvP people or chase bounties. Some offer advanced surveillance and intel services (like finding out where a potential enemy corp's members congregate and hang out. One rule of EVE is that you never have your corp HQ in a system you frequent) and others do covert infiltration (plant a spy character in the target corp).

And yeah, in EVE, you really do want to jump the fuck in. Getting your toes wet is boring. Like, I did a mining op last night with my quartet (Reni in her Orca (http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Orca), Mercy hauling in an Iteron V, Tania in a Hulk, and Anaia in a Covetor) and a can flipper tried to nose his way in. Once we were flagged, Tania swapped to her Harbinger and ruined his day. :P

Wow! I'll really like the sound of all that intelligence gathering and advanced surveillance stuff. I'll definitely have to join a Merc Corp and see how it's all done so I can plan my own taste to it. I definitely wanna do like a small one, since trust is such a big issue. Not sure where I'll set up HQ at... I definitely want to keep the corp mobile, a group of nomads so to speak, as I'm sure Merc Business can take us almost anywhere in the galaxy so have one at a far end would seem tedious. (Not to mention if that system was ever lost, all our assets would be stuck there...)

I've always been a sucker for those peircings and tats as long as it's tastefully done. :D
