View Full Version : Whipping out the Sega Genesis!
Blue Bolt

I got bored two nights ago and dug out the old Genesis. Man what a blast! I hooked up the Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles combo and went on a quest to beat the game with all characters, having all the Super Emeralds (Not those puny Chaos ones :p ). The only thing that sucked is Tails and Knuckles both had special moves that used the same buttons as using the emeralds, so I couldn't fly or glide or climb walls. Other than that though it was a pleasant trip down memory lane :) I plan to spend some of my weekend getting out the old Mortal Kombat games too. :D What's your favorite Sega games?
Man, I wish I still had Gunstar Heroes...

Wow, almost thought that you left Bolt. I haven't seen you since you hit 50.
Genny is a great system. I still think the best console wars were when it was the Genny and the SNES.
I have Gunstar Heroes, got it for 5 bucks out of a shoebox at Otakon last year. I was buying a bunch of random Sailor Moon things and I saw it and nearly lost it when the guy at the stand told me how much he wanted for it. Wait till Super Heroes comes out on the GBA, it looks awesome.
All the Sonic games were great, Earthworm Jim 1 was great, 2 wasn't as good but it has it's moments. Comix Zone was a GREAT beat-em up but it was VERY hard, I need to try it again one day. I still love the co-op in Stimpy's Invention, that's the kind of game you need to play with another person.
I still need to get some more games, I got in on the tail end of the Genny's life cycle because I'm a Nintendo man, but I got sick of missing games like Streets of Rage so I caved in and ask my parrents for it and got it one Christmas.

Comix Zone rocked!
And all 3 Streets of Rage games were badass.

I was never a Sega boy back then. The Genesis was ugly and the controller sucked.
Which doesn't mean I didn't play... :D
Streets of Rage were very cool. I enjoyed Kid Chamaeleon. Sonic was fun, but bored me quickly.
Mortal Kombat, heh...
Sub-Zero Fatality: forward, down, forward+HP
Scorpion Fatality: hold Block, up, up, up, release Block
...
and I remember some others, too. After what, 15 years? God, I suck.

Gunstar Heroes is often available on eBay for a decent price. And it is very much worth it. I don't think Gunstar Super Heroes is going to be as good for several reasons. No co-op play. Can't combine weapons. The lack of co-op is the biggest problem, though.
Comix Zone was awesome. I'm glad I'm not the only person who's heard of that. I loved the way you moved through the levels. I lost count of how many times I played through that.

I still think the coolest part about the original Streets of Rage was the alternate ending, where you became the new crimelord instead of taking the Syndicate down. SoR2 only had the one ending (and I loved Max and wish he had made it into SoR3 instead of Zan) but also had the best music of the three, IMO. And SoR3 was fun and it was full of multiple endings, but it was practically impossible to beat Mr. X's robot and get to the best ending...unless you knew how to unlock and play Shiva, that is. ;)
What else annoyed me about SoR3? Shiva's mugshot. You unlocked Shiva, and his little mugshot between stages and next to his health bar was a question mark. Nevermind that Shiva also appeared as the endgame boss if you allowed the Chief of Police to die and you went to stop the faux mayor from making his speech, and he had a good and proper mugshot for his cutscene and villain's health bar. By the way, Shiva versus Shiva made for a pretty intense final battle. :D
I hear that the Japanese version of SoR3 had some blatantly homosexual (or at least leathery and effeminate) Stage-One-boss-turned-player-character named Ash instead of the super awesome Shiva. Has anyone here actually had the chance to play Ash?

Meh... I really should buy one. It's the only major name Console from after 1990 I don't own.....
I still have my Sega Genesis including about 20 games. Favorites were Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Earthworm Jim 2, Batman and Robin, and X-Men. Also own Mortal Kombat 1-3. Got a lot of them on promotion at the time from video game reps since I assistant managed a video game department and did a lot of shmoozing. :D

There was a game for genesis....Haunting, I think it was called. You were a punker poltergeist, and the whole object of the game was to scare a family out of the house (by possessing objects int he house and such). That game was always fun.
And Widowed...You knew of Shiva, you rock! He was indeed the biggest badass of 3. Never got the Ash though, never hit the import.

Do you remember Shiva's first appearance as Mr. X's bodyguard at the end of SoR2? I remember playing through SoR1, how at the end Mr. X would just send mob after mob of goons at you before he finally summoned up the nerve to grab his Tommy gun and face you himself. With SoR2, I remember the long elevator ride (and the mobs upon mobs of goons) before finally ascending into Mr. X's throne room. I recognized Mr. X from my clashes with him in SoR1, but when I saw Shiva standing right next to him--arms crossed, surveying the scene--I remember thinking "Wow, Mr. X finally gets a right-hand man? This guy must be a real bad-ass. I hope I can beat him."
I was right. And I didn't. :D

Wow, Splatterhouse... now there's a game I always wanted to play for the pure gore when it came out and just completely forgot about.

The Sega Genesis had Splatterhouses 2 and 3, Poison. You could have played Splatterhouse 3, which was simply the best. :D

Yes! I still have that! :) That game was silly. Especially when you made the family wet themselves or drop their drawers.

Heh first system with CD capacity! There was also SUPER ZONK!
I actually had to play those characters as walk arounds when the store I worked for did promotions. I was the only one short enough to fit the costume. Everyone in my department was 5'8" and up. If I had a scanner I'd show the pictures. They were big plushy costumes and you looked out the mouth at people.

Hmmm...
What can I say?
Actually, I always preferred Sega's consoles over the others, such as the Master System, Genesis, and Dreamcast. I was a little bowled over by Saturn, but not overly much. I kinda felt obliged to buy it's public release date was the same day as my birthday.
I really should get back to my old systems, but I buy way too much games I need to complete for my new systems. Also, some of my old systems are boxed in storage, until I get me a house with space or something close.
One of my claims to fame is I can go almost anywhere and know I own more cartrides/legit games and american console systems than most anyone (although, sadly, I have yet to attend a retro-gaming con). The only system I am currently is the 3DO. I do have 2-3 systems from Japan. I don't really count portables or handhelds (although I have some; but I don't focus on collecting them) and some of the variant hard-wired old systems (namely the Pong variants made by many different companies).
I do collect/keep too much. At least my toy buying has died out....for the most part. :p

(It's shorter to name what I DON'T have in my collection, console-wise).

Europe? For some reason, I thought it was Japan. But you would certainly know, seeing as you're in Europe and all.... ;)

I never got a Genesis OR a Nintendo, as that was my Amiga phase, and I wouldn't go anywhere near either PCs or consoles. However, I did pick up a Game Gear, and got several of the Sonic games for it. I would always play Tails instead of Sonic. I hated Sonic. :D
On a related note, when I finally got a Dreamcast, I got Sonic Adventure, and played him only long enough to unlock everyone else. :D Then I finished the story with Tails, Knuckles, and the rest of them, but never finished Sonic's levels. It wasn't until some time later I learned there was a Super Sonic ending, and decided to unlock it. I still hate Sonic. :D
Ah, but the Atari 2600... now there's a console I can tell stories about. :D
