Grrrr... I borrowed her my Windows Xp installation CD back, when we were doing our History Paper (The most important paper in this grade), because her computer had gone haywire. I then proceeded to tell her specifically not to use the code, which was inside the cover, and now after cleaning my computer up and reinstalling Windows, I find out my activation code has been used too many times for me to use it again. So now I have to buy a new Windows XP activation key all because I was trying to be helpful.

I'm thinking about tell her off and then getting her to pay the bill though.

You can call microsoft and they sometimes will reset the key.

Well, if she didnt have her own code, then i dont think they will be that nice.
She should definitely pay for a new one.

Old thread, I know.

If you had already used the code once to install it originally then that same code can't be activated again. XP Pro can only be activated once (unless it's a volume license or MLK disc). So even she couldn't have used it even if she wanted to.

All you have to do is call Microsoft, tell them that you just wiped your machine and you are installing the SAME software back on the SAME machine due to a virus/hardware malfunction/etc...

They will give you a confirmation code and you're golden. It takes no more than 5 minutes. Once you go to activate it and it tells you that you have already activated this product, go to the telephone activation section, it'll give you the code you need to read off to the MS rep and a place to put in the confirmation code he/she gives you.
