Actually, I may be guilty of lagging behind the conversation here, but from what I understand the Bastard Sword got its name not from its appearance, but it's wielder. The "proper" knight would never wield anything but a long sword, it would be beneath his honor as a nobleman. The bastard child of a nobleman, however, since he could not claim his right to his family name and honor, would often use whatever weapon was best, which was the more versatile "hand and a half" blade.
