View Full Version : Warhammer 40k: In the grim future, there is only war

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet Even In his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To Be A man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Welcome to the official GURU Warhammer 40k thread! I've seen enough interest here and there around the forums to warrant a discussion thread. Use this thread to post about anything Warhammer Fantasy Battles or Warhammer 40k related, be it pictures of models, artwork, army lists, game discussion, etc.

But first and foremost, what exactly IS Warhammer 40k?

Warhammer 40k is a tabletop game of war and strategy, where desperate humans and mighty Space Marines pitch battle against the forces of Chaos and any number of foul xenos that inhabit the galaxy, threatening to tear apart the Imperium of Man at its seams. It is a place of endless struggle and never ending strife, fought on floors and tables all over the world.

AWESOME!!! Where do I start?

Head on over to your local Games Workshop (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/home.jsp) or local Independent Stockist, and get yourself the new Assault on Black Reach (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1430013&prodId=prod1570027) box set. It comes with everything you need to get playing, including a handy mini-rulebook, weapon templates, dice, and of course, loads of models to paint and play with. From there, grab a few paints, some brushes, and paint your models in whatever color schemes and designs you like.

But I suck at painting!

Practice makes perfect! Of course your first models will look like garbage, mine sure as hell did. But fear not, they can be easily striped and then re-painted as many times you care to. Pretty soon, you'll be able to paint like this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Xielos/Warhammer%2040k/img4911d45c65e1e.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Xielos/Warhammer%2040k/Ebay566Oct.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Xielos/Warhammer%2040k/Devilfex2-1.jpg

(none of these are mine)

40k sounds AWESOME!!! but I have neither time nor money to play! How else can I experience 40k?

There are numerous ways!

- Dawn of War (http://www.dawnofwargame.com/uk/home/agegate) is a fantastic RTS game, with several expansions and a major sequel coming soon.

- Black Library (http://www.blacklibrary.com/) publishes all official 40k novels and fiction. I highly recommend the Horus Heresy series of book, which explain all the major background information to 40k, set in the 31st millennium. Also anything by Dan Abbnett is fantastic.

- Dark Heresy (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/dark-heresy/) is the Warhammer 40k PnP RPG, featuring a simple percentage based system.

Please post any questions, comments, discussions, painted models or pictures here.

IN THE GRIM FUTURE OF THE 41ST MILLENNIUM, THERE IS ONLY WAR!

DoW!!

I started with Space Marines (of course): I love the little quotes they say..."Walk softly...And carry a big gun." etc.

Then I moved to Chaos...Which is really sweet. I mean, come-on! You can force the workers to work to death!

And finally settled on Necrons. Nothing beats my Necrons. :)

Started with Chaos on the real miniature game but then got sick that the Vanilla Marines got all the nice stuff and chaos went along totally unloved (until they got the Defiler).
Later I got a friend into starting WH40k and we got the starter box with him taking the Vanilla Marines and me taking the Swarm..ahhm...the Tyranids.

I haven't bought or played for the last 2-3 years as none of my playing friends is around and the constant rising of the figures prices has put a deep hole into my money sack.
But I still like to paint and read the White Dwarf articles.

Dawn of War was really great, although I normally hate such sort of games. But the intro cinematics ware simply glorious.

I sold all my Dark Eldar years ago. Nothing else besides Necrons even remotely interested me and a buddy had already bought a bunch of necrons when we started. So I went with the drugged-up psychos.

i started Chaos Space Marines as well. its frustrating to see all the love going to the regular space marines, but i just sit there and think about how much more versitile my fewer choices are.

i think warhammer 40k is something everyone should at least look into if not get into at some point. and if you have an actual games workshop store near you, all the more reason to go check it out.

i laughed when they came out with the new chaos space marine rules.. "let's make them still cost more than regular space marines, but take away most of the "space marine" powers!" oh, and then we'll change the regular chaos space marine powers and leave them with genericvillain23467 stuff.

i remember the days of real marks of chaos, not the namby pamby crap they have now... all followers of khorne got chaos armor and counted as frenzied, all slaneshi were immune to leadership, nurgleites had +1 toughness and tzeentch followers became lvl 1 psykers,

now what do they get? Tzeench followers can reroll one die per game, but hwhat do the others get for marks now?

then the removal of "And they shall know no fear" ability from the chaos space marines... when they rewrote them for the new 40K rules they changed them from dark crusaders of fallen gods of evil to Jim Bob the serial killer.

then the tech differntial....
I mean, come on! they aren't allowed the same tech advances as space marines are, (no storm bolters for terminator squads, no assault cannon, plasma weapons that come with a chance of blowing themselves up)

That same reason is why i still love the first Chaos Space Marine Codex the most. Not only whas it thick as hell, with great artworks and flavor text, but it had this niftly little rule that allowed Chaos Space marines to take all the stuff "loyal" marines had, for 150% the cost.
And Forgeworld, although they make breathtaking cool models, also don't love chaos. There is a campaign book now, with one side being chaos, but hardly any "new" models get released, only pimp-up packs for the plastic models.

I recommend you look through the most recent Chaos Space Marine codex. While I will admit they have been severely toned down (all Greater Demons have the same statline regardless of type, Rubric Marines have 1 wound, you can mix together all the different God's units), the basic chaos marine is far more versatile than the basic loyal marine, and gets a Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Close Combat Weapon, Frag grenades, Krak grenades and a few other goodies at no extra points cost.

The new Dark Eldar codex has been confirmed for a first quarter 2009 release, with a COMPLETELY new range of miniatures. They're pretty much starting from scratch, considering they haven't been updated in 11 years.

Also coming in March of '09 is the new Imperial Guard codex, with a rumored 63 vehicle configurations, new special characters and the promise of more mutable platoons.

The 5th edition Space Marine codex came out last month, and to be honest it seems overpowered. Chapter traits are out the window, replaced with a custom Chapter Master system and loads of new, semi-generic special characters which can be modeled and renamed to fit your own custom chapter. Also Sternguard Veterans, which have 4 special types of ammo, each with a different ability (ignore cover save, AP3, etc).

No "new" models for me. It just a pimped up chaos terminator lord of khorne, and a different god-aligned dreadnought.

What about all the f**** cool demonic engines that had models in the Epic game? Brass Scorpion? Cauldron of Blood? Plague Towers? What did we else get? A droppod, 2 fliers and several dreadnought bodys, but no real new stuff.

If Forgeworld loves chaos, what are they doing with Marines and Imperial Army? Are they married?

40k always looked interesting to me, but I never had the money for the miniatures (infact, my friends and I tend to call it "Nerds have Too Much Money"), but I jumped all over Dawn of War and Dark Heresy when I could. Haven't had the time to get a Dark Heresy game going, but it's good to have the books nontheless.

I've also been drooling at DoW2, especially since it'll have the 'nids in it.

Yeah, 40k is NOT a cheap hobby. But if you want to play either orks or space marines, look into the Assualt on Black Reach box set. For $60 you get a mini-rulebook (full version is $50), a Dreadnought ($45), a space marine captain ($25), 5 Terminators ($45), a 10-man Tactical Squad ($35), a template set ($6), an ork Warboss ($25), 20 ork boyz ($35), 3 ork Deffcopters (can't even buy these), and 5 ork Nobs ($35). I'm sure you can find someone willing to trade you space marines for orks or vice-versa, to double up on either army.

and remember boys and girls, all it takes is some sculpy or "bitz" from other model kits and you too can make space marines into chaos space marines :) (the only chaos space marines models i ever bought were the chaos space marine terminators, every other chaos marine i had was a conversion done by me)

Yeah, but if you wanted to play in "official tournaments", the judges are not supposed to accept those kinds of models; only genuine over-priced Citadel ones. :/

I guess that applies to Gamesworkshop stores, too. But for private games with friends, anything is cool.

No no, so long as the model is either completely scratch sculpted, or is modified using only green stuff/sculpy and parts from other citadel miniatures, its fine for use. What you can't use are parts from other model ranges. And thats only for hoity-toity official tournaments. If some regular guy won't play against you in game shop for using other models, pack up your stuff and move to another table. He isn't worth playing against, and his ilk are known collectively as Warhams.

Even then, that's only at the big Grand Tournaments and such. I'm lucky enough to live in a town with a huge-normous Warhammer crowd, and I've never seen anyone go 'No, you can't play that because it's not a GW model' in any of the local tourneys.

If anyone had been questioning the quality of the Assault on Black reach models, well here they are. The first two I painted a few weeks back, the second two I painted yesterday. They are each composed of 3 parts: Body, head, and arm that isn't up in the air.

Well, theres a reason that model looks so awesome. It was converted from the Space Marine command squad parts by one of the actual sculptors. The legs look like they might be assault squad legs, the torso is the Company Champion torso, the hood is from a librarian, as is the staff. The backpack are two spare fist hands with the vents from the regular backpack glued on. Looks like it was meant to be painted as either Crimson Fists or Imperial Fists.

Warhammer 40K MMO gets a release date

by Brooke Pilley Apr 3rd 2009 at 10:00AM

Filed under: Fantasy, Sci-fi, New titles, News items, Warhammer 40k

THQ just unveiled some release dates for their major game titles over the next few years and if you were getting excited for the Warhammer 40k MMO, you might feel a bit deflated after reading this. The above slide shows that WH40K is slated for a 2012 expected release date, which of course is subject to change.

We haven't heard much from Vigil Games since May 2008 about this title, but what we know sounds promising so far. The MMO's creative director is none other than comic book artist extraordinaire, Joe Madureira (side bar: my favorite artist of all time). Vigil hopes to stay as true to the tabletop experience as they can while still remaining an MMORPG. Finally, the world's primary weapons will be guns and vehicles may play a large part in combat.

While many fans of the Games Workshop miniatures game have found a familiar home in Warhammer Online, many others have complained that Mythic's incarnation of the Warhammer setting is not harsh, gritty, or dark enough. It will be interesting to see if WH40k can capture this or if Vigil will opt for a less mature environment (and rating).
