View Full Version : So, uh... WoW?

Just wondering if anyone here still plays WoW. I've been putzing around with it for a week or two now and remembered there was a group of folks here who play. So, to whoever's still active, where are you at realm-wise? Horde or Alliance? Mind if I bug you continually? :p

Well, if it were a PvE server I'd be able to with no issues, but since I'm on a PvP server I have two accounts--one for Alliance, one for Horde.

For most MMOs, yes. Warhammer broke that mold by making the game primarily about RvR (PvP). You can go the entire game without PvEing once.
In my case, the reason I pushed to 80 is because the stuff I enjoy doing in WoW requires you to be 80--raiding. :)

Since I haven't checked this thread in a while, I will go back to the topic of keylogged accounts... back toward the end of my play time I got keylogged, but didn't know for a week because I didn't log in in that time. They had changed my password which was easily changed back.
Turns out they had levelled my 60 Mage to 65, got me a new pair of pants, and 100 Gold! But they didn't train any of my skills so it would be being significantly less than 100 gold, and they destroyed my Talisman of Ephemeral Power. I would've been mad except I planned on quitting anyway. :P

I know some are still on Scryers, I kept a couple there. I have Hunter, warrior and mage on Moon Guard...good Rp kinda. My Paladin is on Venture Co, cause I liked the open PVP of Conan if not the complete lack of population and RP. Faction changes coming to the World of Warcraft
by Adam Holisky Jun 29th 2009 at 5:06PM
As if the Engineering changes today weren't enough for you, Nethaera has just announced a major bombshell:
Blizzard is implementing a faction switching service.
There is no immediate indication if this will be a free service or a pay service, however based on their past name change, character appearance, and server transfer services it likely will carry with it a small fee.
People have been talking about the ability for characters to switch races and factions for a long time. It appears to finally be here. Neth mentions that "the basic idea is that players will be able to use the service to transform an existing character into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction on the same realm."
She goes on to say that this will be carefully orchestrated to limit the impact in gameplay, and that they don't have all the details worked out yet. There are a lot of things to work out in this – mounts, quests, tabards, pets, achievements, etc... You don't really want to see a Blood Elf Paladin riding around on a Human Charger.
The announcement from Nethaera:
We wanted to give everyone a very early heads-up that, in response to player requests, we're developing a new service for World of Warcraft that will allow players to change their faction from Alliance to Horde or Horde to Alliance. There's still much work to do and many details to iron out, but the basic idea is that players will be able to use the service to transform an existing character into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction on the same realm. Players who ended up creating and leveling up characters on the opposite factions from their friends have been asking for this type of functionality for some time, and we're pleased to be getting closer to being able to deliver it.
As with all of the features and services we offer, we intend to incorporate the faction-change service in a way that won't disrupt the gameplay experience on the realms, and there will be some rules involved with when and how the service can be used. The number of variables involved increases the complexity of implementing this service, but we plan to take the time needed to ensure that it lives up to expectations before officially rolling it out. We'll go into much more detail on all of this here at http://www.WorldofWarcraft.com as development progresses. In the meantime, we wanted to let you know that because this type of functionality requires extensive internal testing well in advance of release, you may be seeing bits and pieces of the service in the test builds we use for the public test realms moving forward.

Based on reading that release, it will change your race.
"the basic idea is that players will be able to use the service to transform an existing character into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction on the same realm."
So not just switch sides. Transform into a rough equivalent. So you will likely change to a race that has your class as an option. Now you know why they gave class parity a few years back.

I am back in WoW as well. Level 70 Draenei Shaman on Rexxar. The new LFD system in WoW rivals CoH's SK/Exemplar system. The game is very casual friendly now and I am loving it. Since unsubbing to CoH this is all I play now when I do get online.

I love Prot Pallys tanking. We have one in our guild that is a friggin' beast.

I am considering getting back into this, too. But I would like to shuffle some of my characters onto other servers... and... I still don't have anyone that is too high-leveled (a few reasons for that).
There are some changes I've seen that have me interested (the queues to play dungeons from anywhere is one big one), but I still see some "milking" that I don't really like. (A friend mentioned the Valentine-Quests: last year, they were easier...this year, more stuff to do. "Dailies" are fine, but I sorta hate that "milk run" type of mechanic that some people get tied down to. I am a badge/accolade whore, but putting in lots of hours is just...meh.)

Hit I, pick dungeons you want to run, or select Normal or Random Heroics. It puts you in queue, when enough people in your battlegroup queue with you, you can start the dungeon.

Well I was wondering more about the level range aspect. I don't play Wow because a level 20 can't play with a level 40 who can't play with a level 70 and realisticly expect to get anything out of it.

Are there still Gurus out there playing WoW regularly? In the patch yesterday they add RealID which lets you chat with cross-faction, cross-server and cross-game. So if you are playing Diablo III or Starcraft II you can chat with friends playing WoW. Pretty cool addition. They are recommending you only friend people you know outside of the games though just to be safe. I have not experimented with it but I will accept friend requests from any of the Gurus here.
Also, there has been some hints on the Tiawanese forums that Cataclysm Beta is coming very soon. The information they have released so far about it sounds amazing!

What kind of guild are you looking for? The one I am is full of great people. Most of them met through gamer blogs and they all play multiple games. It is far from hardcore and we raid ICC10 (10/12) twice a week with 2 separate groups. If you are interested you would have to transfer of course. The website is www.casualtiesguild.com
Also, the "Trade Chat" community does suck. With 10 million+ subscribers you are going to get alot of assholes. I have not had many problems with PuGs though but have heard horror stories. I mostly keep quiet in PuG raids and let others show what an ass they can be. It usually works out in the end.

I've been described as a "goal-gamer"... I have two wishlists in-game. One is my raiding gear, the other is my aesthetics. I really want to run with a group who likes to do the old content just for the flair. And yes, while I am a "hardcore" player. I really do hate "hardcore" guilds in WoW. WoW is probably the easiest MMO I've ever played. IIRC, I've run every 5-man at least three times with a gearscore under 4k.
I also hate anyone who judges skill based on gearscore.

We have alot in common in WoW then. I like going after achievements when not raiding. I went back with my guild and did all the Vanilla Raids, alot of which I have never done. Next we are going to do the BC raids. There is just so much to do in game that I am rarely bored with it. I hate "gear score Nazis" as well, unfortunately some of the high end-game stuff is impossible or extremely difficult with at least 5k or more.

06-24-2010, 08:43 PM
*high fives* And I completely understand that. That's why you can't enter certain ones without a certain gear score. I lost count of how many introductions began with, "This is Rodeck! He's a Prot Pally. Just started playing about a month ago and he's already 80!" "lol 3k gs?" or "omg im not goin on a run with him look at his gs", etc. I've gone through about 3 Guilds. Most of which seemed completely uninterested in actually helping other people get the gear they require to do the High-GS content.
If I can find a guild I like, I'd like to settle into the same mold that I have for CoX: PLing, farming for drops for Lowbies, and helping people Gear up. Most people laugh when I tell them that and say that's a stupid reason to play WoW. Fortunately, I was born with an above-average penis. I don't need to flaunt T10 Gear. =p
In all seriousness, if you think I'd fit in with your Guild, I'll switch servers and give it a shot.

Here's how serious I am...what's a gear score?
Gear Score is a number associated to the gear/gems/enchantments a character has. The higher the score the better the character is (in the hands of a good player). There is a in-game mod that calculates it but the website www.wow-heroes.com is the best place to go to get your gear score. W-H takes gems, enchantments and glyphs in consideration when calculating gear score. Gear Score is mostly used for end-game raiding.

The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID -- that is, their real-life first and last name -- with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it.

They are with the Incarnate system. The only reason WoW is so addicting is because it takes forever to actually finish your character. IOs were far too easily accessible due to the fact that you can trade/sell them. If Purples were BoP, you'd see far more people playing their 50s.
What I really would love for WoW to do is what Aion recently implemented- Allow Item-Remodeling. If you absolutely love the way your current armor looks, but come across something that's better, you can take the image of one and bind it to the piece of equipment that's better. The item then becomes bound to your character. This allows much more aesthetic diversity. Something I feel WoW is lacking at the high end. If you want to be at the top of the charts, you have to look like everyone else. I absolutely hate that.

While that fine for you, there's a lot of people who would be affected negatively by this. I cannot tell you how many requests from folks I have personally seen who ask for their character (or global) name to be changed because they are being stalked by some other player and want to hide from them but still enjoy the game. And it's not just players; several years ago there was a female GM from another company that was being stalked by a player IRL, and the guy actually called the office from a deli that was down the street from where she lived. There's a lot of creeps out there and letting them access the real name of the person they're obsessed with is bad juju, especially if it can be avoided.
And I know you say "It's just the forums", but people do sometimes need to turn to those for help or information when they can't get it otherwise. It's a resource that Blizzard seems to feel should now be unsafe to use.

EQ2 has had this for years. At level 20, your character gets Appearance slots. Any weapon or armor piece your character can normally use can go in the Appearance slot, and it will look like you have that on instead of what you're really using and gaining benefits from.

You also don't need to have a forum account to view them. There are also MANY alternate fansites which have a far better reputation than the official forums as far as factual information is concerned. This is also completely ignoring in-game Help chat channels.

For the moment, privacy has won out. (http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/plugged-in/activision-battles-trolls-backs-down-on-privacy-fears/1404811)
Activision Battles 'Trolls,' Backs Down on Privacy Fears
by Chris Morris, CNBC.com
Trolls are pretty common in the online game “World of Warcraft.” Unfortunately, they’re pretty common on the game's message boards as well.
Trolls, slang for people who haunt Internet forums and rip into other posters for seemingly innocuous statements, tend to ruin the fun for other players, who are sometimes seeking help or looking to start conversations.
Earlier this week, Activision-Blizzard announced its plan to rid the Blizzard forums of these troublemakers; beginning later this month, all posts would be made under user’s real names, not their online aliases.
Three days later, though, the company reversed those plans, battered by an onslaught of opposition not just from the troublemakers, but from more courteous players as well.
A large part of the outcry came from players concerned about their privacy. Trolls—on any public forum, including comments on news sites—hide behind the anonymity of the Internet, knowing they can never be held accountable for their comments. Having their name publicly attached to them was not an appealing prospect and they quickly howled.
Others, though, were more worried that anything they wrote on those message boards could be easily found with a Google search—and an off-the-cuff comment made online could have repercussions for them in real-world relationships.
“In a world where employers typically do Google searches for people's names prior to hiring them, this will exclude me from posting since my name is too unique,” said ‘noxiousegg,’ a user discussing the changes on Shacknews.com, another gaming site.
“Even though I'm not a troll, usually, I don't want an employer to render arbitrary judgments based on the content of my posts on a game forum, or worse, on the simple fact that I post at all,” the user also wrote.
Still others were concerned that with access to their real name, other players could dig up additional information about them, including photos, addresses, phone numbers and more. Some female players said they feared harassment.
“Not only do I not want to be petitioned by random people for cyberlovin while I am playing a game, but more importantly I do not want to be a target offline,” wrote user ‘Quira’ in the Blizzard forums.
With over 11 million people currently playing “World of Warcraft,” the privacy fears raised valid alarms. While only a small fraction of players use the Blizzard forums, they are still among the most active in the gaming world. And, in some cases, they are the most fanatical.
Names would be taken from the Real ID feature— which is tied in with users’ account and billing information—on the company’s Battle.net service, its online hub for all games.
Blizzard, as a studio, has never had a commercial flop. And its titles transcend traditional gaming borders, bringing casual and hardcore players together. Several celebrities and athletes regularly play the games as well (though it’s unknown if any participate in the forums).
Warcraft Dwarf
Blizzard, as a studio, has never had a commercial flop.
The announcement, however, had caused some loyal players to threaten to cancel pre-orders of upcoming titles. That’s a common reaction when a publisher makes a controversial move and it’s rarely done in widespread numbers—but Activision was unwilling to risk any damage to the Blizzard brand.
Blizzard is the undisputed king of the massively multiplayer world, but new challengers are looming. Electronic Arts is planning to launch a “Star Wars” persistent world next year, which could test the loyalty of “World of Warcraft” players.
While privacy fears by members were apparently the chief reason behind the policy reversal, some players had a different concern: their apprehension was the use of real names in the forum would remove some of the fantasy elements of the games.
Players flock to video games for a break from reality, just as they do with movies. Seeing “Frank Smith” rather than something along the lines of “Winterbane” alongside a post would be like going to a Harry Potter film and seeing the lead actor referred to as “Daniel” throughout the film.
Blizzard, in announcing the decision to back off of its plan Friday, noted it was user feedback that prompted the action. However, it says, it still hopes to find a way to make the forums more positive environment.
“It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums,” wrote Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games.”
Not sure how long this will last or if some other method will be brought up.

Hmm.. wonder how much Hunter changed. Well.. as long as I have my turtle everything will be okay.
Hunters are becoming more useful to raids. Cataclysm is bringing back the more complex encounters. Boss fights that require more than just tank and spank. Lots of control is needed to keep from full wipes.
Hunters are getting rid of mana and gaining something called focus. You earn focus points through attacks and the more powerful attacks burn more focus points. Playing a hunter is going to take a lot more skill than it does now so I wager many people will reroll. You will now be able to stable 20 pets and have 5 pets on you at one time but still only one out at a time. So now you can change out a pet in a middle of a raid depending on the encounter. But this is the biggest change of all. Many of the pets will bring unique part buffs. Some are quite powerful. So now a hunter can go from just being straight DPS to being a DPS/Buffer in raids. It is pretty sweet.
Also, the Worgen and the Undead hunters look pretty cool and they upgraded animations on some of the hunter attacks.
Can't forget the unique Goblin Mount.

Hmm, I'd like to learn more about this.
This is the patch that is rolling out next week (at least it should be next week) in preparation for Cataclysm
General
Cataclysm Launcher Update
The new Cataclysm Launcher allows you to stream game data while you play. This will reduce the time you spend downloading, installing, and patching World of Warcraft. We'd like to get your feedback on the toolset and gameplay experience. Please head to the forums here for additional information.
Reforging
Players can now visit special Reforging NPCs in capital cities located near Enchanting trainers. 40% of any one secondary stat on an item can be can be allocated to add a new secondary stat to the item. The stat being added cannot already exist on the item. An item cannot have more than one reforged stat at a time, though the Reforging of an item can be undone and changed.
Copied Test Realm characters are not copied with their achievement history in order to better facilitate the character copy process.
Dungeons & Raids
Flexible Raid Lock System
All Wrath of the Lich King raids now use the new Flexible Raid Lock system. This system provides the opportunity for a character to defeat each raid zone's encounters once a week. A character may now complete the encounters during the week with different raids of either 10 or 25 players.
Icecrown Citadel
The Chill of the Throne effect has been removed.
Trial of the Crusader now uses the Dynamic Difficulty system found in Icecrown Citadel and The Ruby Sanctum.
Currency
PvE Currency Changes
All Emblems of Frost and Emblems of Triumph have been converted to new Justice Points.
Any dungeon or raid which awarded these emblems will reward Justice Points instead. Anything below Emblems of Triumph, including badges from The Burning Crusade dungeon and raid content, have been converted into gold and sent to players via the in-game mail system.
Any bosses players defeat that are level-appropriate to them award Justice Points.
All items that previously cost emblems or badges of any type now cost Justice Points.
Higher-tier Valor Points will be awarded to players who kill dungeon and raid bosses in the latest tier of PvE content after the launch of Cataclysm.
PvP Currency Changes
All Arena Points, Honor Points, Battleground Marks of Honor, Stone Keeper's Shards, Venture Coins, and Spirit Shards have been converted into new Honor Points.
Honor Points will be awarded instead of these currencies, with the exception of Arena Points.
Higher-tier Conquest Points will be awarded to players competing in each of the latest Arena or Rated Battleground seasons after the launch of Cataclysm.
For more information on the changes to the currencies and conversion rates for each type, please visit our Cataclysm forum.
Classes: General
Many class talents, spells, and abilities have been overhauled, added, or removed.
All spell and ability tooltips will now display damage averages rather than minimum and maximum damage potential. This feature is on by default but can be changed via the Display settings under User Interface options.
Ammo has been removed from the game.
The character levels at which classes gain new spells and abilities have changed.
Many item and class stats have been changed or removed.
Mastery rating has been added as a new stat which provides unique benefits for characters based on class and talent specialization. Mastery rating does not currently exist on items in the game, however, Reforging can be used to add Mastery rating as a secondary stat to existing items.
Rage has been normalized.
Spells and abilities no longer have multiple ranks and now scale with character level.
Talent trees have been altered. All player talent specializations have been reset, allowing for free re-specialization.
Each specialization has been reduced to a 31-point talent tree.
Players will now get a total of 41 talent points to spend.
Players will be asked to choose a specialization at level 10. Doing so will result in the unlocking of a spell or ability unique to that specialization, as well as one or more passive bonuses.
Once a talent specialization has been chosen, players may only place points in the primary tree until at least 31 points have been spent there.
The initial announcement regarding these talent tree changes can be found on our Cataclysm forum.
Death Knights
A dedicated tanking tree (Blood) has been implemented.
The effects of Blood Presence and Frost Presence have been exchanged.
The way in which runes recharge has changed.
Druids
A new Eclipse mechanic has been added for druids.
Hunters
Five pets can now be stored with the hunter at all times. Any one of these five pets can be summoned via the Call Pet ability.
Focus has replaced mana as a new resource.
Hunters now start with a pet at level 1.
The Stable will now store 20 pets. If a pet is moved into the Stable, its talents are wiped.
Mages
There is now a new spell fly-out UI feature for mage portals. Clicking on the Teleport or Portal buttons will expand the list of choices available.
Paladins
Paladins now have a new resource bar.
Warlocks
There is now a new spell fly-out UI feature for warlock pets. Clicking on this single button will open up the list of available pets to summon.
Soul Shards have been removed from the game as items. Instead, they now exist as a resource system necessary for using, or altering the mechanics of certain spells.
Items
Resilience no longer reduces the chance a player will be critically hit by an opponent.
Durability: cloth, leather, and mail now have as many points of durability as plate, making the repair cost on death much closer to equal for all classes.
Professions
The glyph system has been updated to now feature three different types of glyphs. Many class glyphs have been added, altered, or moved to different glyph types.
User Interface
Spell Alerts have been added to notify players when procs on select spells and abilities occur. A visual notification will display around the character and the activated ability will be highlighted on the action bar.
The Arena Teams pane has been improved.
The Character pane has been redesigned. Character stats can now be shown or hidden via the Show All Details/Hide All Details button on the bottom left. When shown, all character stats will be visible in a window to the right of the pane. Stat sections can be reorganized by clicking and dragging them up or down the pane.
The Professions panes now have more filtering and search functionality, as well as buttons to easily link recipes in the chat frame.
A Professions screen has been added to the Spellbook to better display the details of a character's primary and secondary professions.
Many of the yellow System Messages that would display in the chat frame when leveling up have been removed.
New text animations now alert players as they level up, also providing information on when new talents, spells and abilities are available.
Professions and Class Trainers windows have been altered to more clearly display available and upcoming purchases.
New Raid frames are now. They can also be used in place of the standard 5-player party interface via the User Interface options.
The Spellbook interface has been improved for greater ease-of-use and visual appeal.

I might pop back in for a month soon to try the changes and play with friends. Won't be expanding anytime soon though.

I would wait until Dec. 7th when Cataclysm goes live. You don't need the expansion to experience the changes to the old world.

Hunters are getting rid of mana and gaining something called focus. You earn focus points through attacks and the more powerful attacks burn more focus points. Playing a hunter is going to take a lot more skill than it does now so I wager many people will reroll.
HAHAH! LotRO Rangers. Identical.

Yes, very similar.

Massive Patch download today in preparation for Cataclysm. Updated graphics (mostly water and reflective surfaces), talent changes, reforging, more glyphs, etc. Here is some of what to expect. (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/test-realm-patchnotes.html)
Also Blizzard announced that World of Warcraft hit 12 million subscribers (http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/press/pressreleases.html?101007). I would wager they will gain another 2 million once Cataclysm goes live in December.

Cataclysm goes live tomorrow or tonight at midnight. Either way Dec. 7th. If you are already in, you know that they have already updated Azeroth with the big changes. Questing is no longer the grinding and long walks it used to be. Everything is very stream-lined and a lot more fun. Lots of lore, cut scenes and phasing of areas. The game is simply amazing. The launch tomorrow will bring level 80-85 content. Old World flying (now you can fly everywhere) and Worgens and Goblins as a playable race.

Hmm sounds better than when I was playing it. Might have to give it another chance if it's improved that much.

It is worth checking out. They added more flight paths to make leveling easier and all the quest chains are closer to the quest giver. Some quests no longer require you to return to the giver they just automatically give you the next quest in the chain. Pretty nifty stuff.
Plus this opening cinematic is amazing! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq4Y7ztznKc)

I will probably grab it and try it out. A friend of mine has been trying to make me come back.
I tried logging into the website, but apparently they DID sorta went with the Real ID stuff, although you can hide your personal info, it seems. It seems I can't log into the website, but maybe the game (my updater has broken; it Blizzard seems to do something before every update that makes it hard for someone, like me, that hasn't played in a long time, to do a simple update without either re-installing or buying a new game after a year or more of inactivity).
The penguin pet sounds nice, but not sure I wanna convert to Real ID.

I used some free playtime that I got because my account was offline for more than a year. You know need a Battle.Net Account and have to tie your Warcraft account to this Battle.Net account (similar to your NCSoft master account).
Afterwards you log into the game with our email adress and your master account password (as far as I understand it).
Visited a midnight sale tonight, not for the expansion but for a friend celebrating the first minutes of his birthday there (and then of course getting a collectors edition from his girl friend). Tried to get onto the servers afterwards but wasn't able to and stopped it after nearly 20 minutes. By now it should be easier to get into the game again.
From playing these 7 free days I remembered how dumb WoW was/is. Sure, the world is huge and nearly free of barriers which is great. But traveling (even with the additional flying routes, and flying mounts) still takes a serious chunk off your playtime.

Are you going to the old site? They recently switched and updated their site to http://us.battle.net/wow/en/

You think so? I found the fact that all the quests are close to the quest giver made the traveling a lot less time consuming. Also, you now get your first mount at level 20 so you don't have to wait that long.
I have not logged in yet since it went live at 3am my time and I am at work now but will when I get home. Headed to the underwater world to quest first since I am told it is less crowded due to it being more difficult than Mt. Hyjal.

Well, I was in the Shard World for nearly all the time, and agreed, the quests all took place mostly in the same zone, but were still spread out like stars in the sky. I read somewhere that contacts now would auto-finish quests and that you would not have to return to them to end a quest. I did not encounter this. I had to travel back to each of my contacts to get rid of finished quests, although I tried to save some time by completing as much quests as possible to avoid unnessacarry travel.
One thing still bugging me about the game is all the "My **** is much bigger than yours" attitude. Without gear you are nothing. That was one of the main reasons I enjoyed CoH from the very start, as it was not loot driven. Admitted, with Inventions came rare recipes that could be considered "CoH's male primale sexual organ" and could be used to measure one player to another.
But you are still welcomed in every group that asks for your help, either if you are IOed, SOed or even TOed out.
In WoW the contstant requests for help with raids etc. were ok, until they started asking you "You do have a full set of purple equip? No? Kthxbye".
And the mount at 20 is great, but still feels aloooooooooooot slower than Super Jump or SuperSpeed :D IIt feels more along the lines of Hover.

Not all the quests auto-complete. The quests that require you to bring the giver something do not auto-complete.
The attitude is never going to go away. I guess when you have 11 million+ subscribers that is going to happen. I have hooked up with a solid guild so I don't run into that very much.
I love the humor in some of the WoW Questlines. There is a new one in Redridge that is written straight from Rambo and A-Team. Even the names are similar. In the end there is a quest called AAAAAAHHHHH!! Where you drive a Gnome Tank with "John Rambo" as gunner slaughtering Orcs. It is a lot of fun.
