No-one around here ever talks about music; and the last time we sort of did, it turned into an argument (which I admit I was partly to blame for).
So let's start a positive thread about this, because I genuinely want to know what music gets everyone here excited, and I think music is an important - if not vital - part of life.
What's your favorite band or musician? What albums live in your stereo for months at a time? What new or upcoming cd are you super-excited about and you think everyone else would be super-excited about too?
One rule: No criticism of other people's tastes. If you don't like the music someone posted, respond by posting music that YOU enjoy.

At the moment, I'm listening to very little but R.E.M., who are probably one of, if not my favorite band of all time. 'Everybody Hurts', 'Daysleeper', 'Electrolite', 'Nightswimming', 'Losing My Religion' and 'Imitation of Life' are being vastly overplayed at the moment. My house mates are beginning to get very annoyed with this little R.E.M. kick. As such I'm attempting to listen to some other stuff but I'm pretty stuck on R.E.M. at the moment, regardless...
When I truly do get told to listen to something else, I'm mixing that up with a bit of Neutral Milk Hotel, which at times can be nauseatingly spiritual ('King of the Carrot Flowers pt. 2-3') and other times is absolute, surrealist genius ('Ghost'). Aside from that I'm listening to (at completely the opposite end of the spectrum) a tiny bit of Mobb Deep. Ain't no such things as halfway crooks...

I've always loved "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" by REM. Partly due to "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron" by Daniel Clowes (If you haven't read it, read it, it's amazing.).
I haven't heard much of Neutral Milk Hotel or Kings of Leon, but I've heard an awful lot about them. I may have to give them a shot.

I worked at Barnes and Noble for a while, and for a whole 2 months that cd was one of the in-store-play albums. I've heard that song so many times, that bananaphones have lost all meaning to me! :P

Since its October, Ive been listening to lots of Type O Negative. Among them Im a huge Devin Townsend fan. Then theres Smaxone, Mnemic and oh so many more.
Though, after watching Lost in Translation I have been turned on toward some more indie stuff, since the soundtrack for that movie is so brilliant. I really try and stay away from main stream rock and metal you hear on the radio, as most of it is crap.

Usually, I listen to the local Alternative Rock station or the Hard Rock station that broadcasts from Watertown in my Jeep while I drive around to work or what have you. Then, at home, I listen to ProudFM which broadcasts out of Toronto.
However, since felvericken (partner) and I went to see NiN at the ACC in July, I've been stuck on Nine Inch Nails, Godsmack and Darling Violetta at home.
Most of my music is of the Rock persuasion and, if I am listening to music at home, I just put winamp on random and let it go. Felv is big on Chris Cornell and GNR lately, so I can be caught listening to them, too.
Occasionally I tune into the Cape, too.

I love parodies and interesting covers. I have no idea why. I guess I’m so obsessed with comedy, that is has to cover every aspect of media, including movies, music, and television.
Currently, I am very into this song.

The new NIN album is quite good; and was a free download which makes it even better. Speaking of which, one of my favorite albums from the past year was "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust" by Saul Williams (http://www.myspace.com/saulwilliams). It's awesome, awesome, awesome, and was produced by Trent Reznor and Thavius Beck (http://www.myspace.com/thavius), and is awesomely awesome.
I actually used to have Godsmack's very first self-released album, but sold it a couple years ago on eBay for like 150 bucks. One of those very rare perks of living in New England, lol.
I'd never heard of Darling Violetta before, but I just checked them out on Myspace. I actually really like their sound. Sort of a jangly, old-fashioned goth sound. Made me think of Bauhaus a little, which I'm sure is intentional on their part.
What's the ACC?

What!? It's not even rare! Although I have pondered spending that much on the much wanted "Anyone For Doomsday?" from Powerman 5000, I will never forgive Spider One for not releasing that thing.
Lately I've been mixing up my genres, I'm a metal/rock guy.. and my top songs atm are Frou Frou's "Hear Me Out" and Jace Everettes "Bad Things", which are like Alternative Pop and Country. Mostly because I think the singer for Frou Frou has a beautiful voice, and because "Bad Things" is the theme for True Blood.
Of course theres the bands I swear by.. Paradise Lost and Iced Earth, you should all look into them. Both are great, but if your in the U.S. and start to like Paradise Lost.. warning, importing might have to be done. Evil. Iced Earth is just plain awesome though, great theme albums for the most part. I highly recommend their album "Horror Show".

I dunno, I think that Godsmack cd was only available at Newbury Comics, and only for a while. But at any rate, I was pretty happy with the cash I got for it.
I've always had a weakness for Powerman 5000, partly because they write songs about superheroes. And doesn't Iced Earth always have comicbook artists do their covers?

Ah, okay. I've only had limited exposure to them... I briefly dated a girl who was a big fan. I think they had an album with Purgatory on the cover too?

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is one of my favorite movies ever, but I never watched much of the show or its spinoffs. I mostly just like Paul Reubens.

Suddenly on rather a Bob Dylan kick. No idea why; I find his voice utterly ridiculous. His songwriting ability, however, can't be argued with. Some beautiful lyrics the man's got.

Haha, one time a good friend of mine was trying to explain something that had disappointed him greatly, and he said:
"You know how it felt the first time you actually heard Bob Dylan's music instead of just reading the lyrics? It was like that."

It's like.. Hayden is working at making me hate her. Dear lord.
LOL! I didn't know she was playing the Hillary Duff pop game.
I have no real hate for pop music, though that faux-reggae beat she's singing over is about as wack as wack can be. They should have gotten an actual producer instead of the "Demo" setting on a Casio keyboard. She's got a good voice, though.
The stuff she's done for funnyordie.com redeems any bad music she's done anyhow.

From Cambridge, Massachusetts, 28-year-old rapper Kiki Ceac's second album is a wildstyle collision of of science-fiction electronics and semi-industrial beats, interwoven with dense wordplay reminiscent of KRS-1. Few rappers think to use words like "polyocular"; fewer manage to make them funky.
One of the nicest dudes I know, a fellow superhero nerd and former CoH player, and one of the best musicians on the planet in my opinion.

Can't pick an all time favorite or anything like that, but lately I've been listening to copious amounts of Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Cannibal Corpse, Naglfar's "Pariah", Rotting Christ's "Khronos", Winds of Plague's "Decimate the Weak", and Dimmu Borgir's "In Sorte Diaboli". I mostly listen to metal (all kinds, though most Black Metal bands kind of suck, IMO) though I also have been known to enjoy various other kinds of rock (I <3 STP, Matchbox 20, and Eve 6) and even the occassional RnB and Rap song.

Absolutely obsessed with Glen Hansard at the moment, and in particular the song Say It To Me Now (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8zEyRixsDZY), because I don't think I've heard passion like that in a song for quite some time. Give it a listen and see what you think.

Okay: Chris Cornell in Ottawa.
One word: Awesome.
This concert blew Nine Inch Nails outta the water! The crowd was mega hyped, the songs rocked - Cornell had us eating out of his hand, as did most of his band. Almost every song had us singing along with him and the crown sang most of Like A Stone which was pretty sweet. We were one of first people into the arena so we got right behind the gate/in front of the stage left. My left ear is still ringing.
My only complaint was that he pulled an Axl Rose and started an hour later, after the opening act. Id say the wait was worth it but if I went to see him again and he pulled that stunt I'd probably leave.
Highlights from the experience include:
* Getting lost twice on the way to Ottawa. It's a good thing my boyfriend is cute because he sucks as a Navigator.
* A young woman behind us, probably in her early twenties, with huge breasts making eyes at the bassist and getting a response! I kept thinking, "Man, he's getting laid tonight."
* Getting my boyfriend a "precious" guitar pick by asking the huge, imposing security guard to grab one I couldn't reach. What is funny is that I had previously made fun of him for saying people would scramble for a small piece of plastic. Then I go out of my way to get him one. Meh. It made him happy.
All-in-all, I'd say that it was a pretty sweet concert.
This is Hunger Strike feat. Mat Joly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHkdzFgkGzM&feature=related) Live in Hamilton on the 19th. The opening band sucked, but this give you an idea of the awesomeness.

Oh my GOD, I can't believe I hadn't seen this thread yet. Insane.
Not sure if everyone here is aware but I'm frontman for the Central Florida Southern Metal band KINGS OF AWESOME (http://www.kingsofawesome.com) and we'd really appreciate hearing from more folks about our music. All the songs on our profile are from our demo; we should be in full-blown Recording Mode by the year's end. On that page, too, is our entire 4-hour set of covers and originals... we favor Heavy and Hair Metal, some Classic Rock but we're really focused on making it with our originals.
In the past year, we've had the pleasure of performing with some GREAT acts, regional AND international, like Orange Sky (http://www.theorangesky.com/), 20WT (http://www.20wt.com), Lost In Chaos (http://www.myspace.com/lostinchaosmusic) along with a TON of aspiring local bands and soon we hope to add Thomas Wynn & The Believers (http://www.myspace.com/thomaswynnandthebelievers) to that list... we've even played a couple Bikefests, charity events and we look forward to spreadin' the KINGDOM around a bit.
Our influences are listed on the site, but if yer lazy: :P
.38 Special, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice In Chains, Black Label Society, Black Sabbath, Cliff-tallica, Dio, Dokken, Guns N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Journey, Judas Priest, KISS, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ozzy, Pantera, Paul Gilbert, Pride & Glory, Queen, Queensryche, Ratt, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Tenacious D, Van Halen, Whitesnake, and Yngwie Malmsteen ...to name a few.

I listen to both kinds of music. Country AND Western.
My tastes are too eclectic. Play a lot of Blackmore's Night, Heather Alexander, Rob Zombie, Rammstein, Dresden Dolls, Jimmy Buffet, ABBA, Bollywood soundtracks, classical (Beethoven, Mozart, Hayden) and a bunch of the local bands.
My dream is to eventually expose people to the greatness that was the world beat sound of The Crazy 8's but I have yet to find a place to download them because I despise the local music store.

Have you listened to the Mountain Goats? Firstly, they're fucking amazing. Secondly, John Darnielle (singer/songwriter who for a time was the only actual member of the Mountain Goats) has a voice that I like to pretend doesn't sound like Weird Al but totally does, so you won't be put off by him vocally.
