Pretty damn legit. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8XaHw-RO0c)
If youve missed the news, that guy was on Apollo 13 and is coming out now, because he has some sort of illness that will kill him. I'd say this is pretty big. I believed in aliens before, but its nice to have some sort of confirmation. It's interesting to think that we have probably been reverse engineering their technology over the past years.

sorry, I can't take this guy serious.
That's not to say that I don't believe in the possibility of E.T.s.
My Uncle Wayne was in the Air Force and was stationed at the base near Roswell. He was a serious (never joked around) hardcore type of man. He would never talk about his time there. He was also the kind of man that lived by his word and honor. I honestly believed they made him take an oath of silence of the subject which he maintained until his death.
The closest he ever came to talking about it was when we (just him and I) was driving to junkyard to get a spare part for his truck.
He asked me if I had ever heard of a book called "Chariot of the Gods". I said "no sir". He told me to read it and then looked me dead in the eye and said "keep an open mind"...

Here's a little secret: Getting shot into space in a confined bucket with the same amount of technology as my digital watch is probably going to **** with your head. And he's old. Come on.
Why? Why would Aliens come to this planet and not announce their pressence? Or at least be better at staying hidden? It makes no sense whatsoever. This is about as legit as AboveTopSecret.com.

QFT. Also, I don't really accept something called "Edgar Mitchell Speak!", that has a heavy-metal soundtrack and pictures of flying saucers as "legit".
I believe we MAY come across alien life someday; but I also have no doubt that it will take us a long time to even identify it AS life. My problem with UFO enthusiasts is that they often have a very narrow imagination. They live in a carbon-based, six-foot-tall monkey-world, and can't seem to envision a universe where intelligent lifeforms can be very big or very small, shaped differently from humans, or made up of other base element than carbon. The aliens most often described in this sort of "UFO" silliness look like us, are interested in the same things as us, and often seem to want to have sex with us. It's just goofy Star Trek stuff.
Also - and this is just a pet peeve of mine that happened to show up in that video - any "flying saucer" that is portrayed as disc, frisbee, or "saucer"-shaped can be IMMEDIATELY debunked. The term "flying saucer" was coined to described the MOVEMENT of a UFO ("...like a saucer being skipped across water"); the UFOs themselves were described as cigar-shaped in that particular incident.

While it's definitely important to keep an open mind, it's far MORE important to keep a SKEPTICAL mind.
"Chariots of the Gods" is a dumb book, which draws a lot of dumb conclusions. Most of it is based on the EXTREMELY racist premise that non-white people are too stupid to do anything significant without help. A good example is the Moai statues on Easter Island, which Von Däniken claimed HAD to have been manufactured by aliens because they could never have been made by "heathens" with their "crude", "primitive" tools. He never actually ASKED a native of Easter Island to SHOW him how they were made; they would have done it gladly, and explained the reasons for it as well, as we now know from actual RESEARCH. Von Däniken was a racist, who couldn't possibly believe that non-white people (the Egyptians, the Aztecs, the inhabitants of Easter Island, even those dark-skinned Jews who wrote the Bible) could actually accomplish anything without assistance from the Star-Gods.
A better book to read would be "Why People Believe Weird Things" by Michael Shermer.
And this isn't an attack on your uncle, his word, his honor, his experiences, or his intelligence. Even the best people can be pulled in by bad ideas if they are presented well enough. It's just that reading ONE book is never enough to base a belief on.

What's truly sad is that, while I've come to similar conclusions; I have never heard anyone come close to saying anything remotely touching on the idea. Thank you Flashbulb.
I'd also add to the peeve that everyone always assumes "intelligent" alien life denotes complex toolmaking skills. Cause clearly, there's no way an organism can develop cognitive abilities unless it needs to constantly adjust its environment to survive. Nevermind all the idiots we have along with our toolmaking. I can see it now, "Haha, look at them! They must be dumb, they never built a gun. They'll be easy to conq-OH GOD MY BRAIN!"

This is precisely one of the reasons I'm such a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction. The vast majority of science fiction out there portrays aliens as being essentially humanoid, or if not human, derivative of some other native Earth-based lifeforms. Very rarely will you come across a truly "alien" alien. Lovecraft did that, and showed us just how ignorant and insignificant humanity truly is in the process. I suspect he was a lot closer to the mark than the gray alien people.

Just to share my general thoughts on the matter.
Do I believe this guy? I dunno. There is so much crap out there it's hard to know what really is going on. I mean if the government has enough power to keep a secret like this, they would be powerful enough to make it up for some other unknown reason. A cover-up or whatever. So who the hell knows.
As for alien life-forms in general, I absolutely think they exist. When you realize the size of the universe, like when looking at that Hubble Telescope image of distant galaxies, it basically seems like a mathematical impossibility that we are alone in the universe. Has Earth ever been visited by aliens? I don't know. Like the conspiracy idea, there is so much crap out there about alien visitation it's hard to know what's going on.
If you haven't seen it, here is the Hubble Telescope image I am talking about. Truly awe-inspiring. Aside from the visible galaxy shapes, each of those dots of light are individual galaxies. Each with millions/billions of stars, each star possibly having planets. And this is only a very tiny amount of the sky. Like a thumbnail.

Even if anything actually has visited here, I seriously do not have enough faith in any government to successfully cover it up. No organization is that competent.
EDIT: Amazingly awesome image there, Mystic.

lol 9/11 conspiracy theories.
Anyway, I believe in aliens for the same reason as The Mystic - we can't just be one, cosmic fluke. I don't know whether I believe this guy's story though, since to me he just seems like an old man trying to cash in.

It would be ignorant to think that we are the lone form of life in the universe, and ignorant even - as Charon pointed out - to say life on Earth occured as a random fluke (as evolution from organic molecules towards eventually organic lifeforms makes perfect sense on a scientific level). Evolution could conceiveably occur on any planet within a certain set of conditions. Life on other planets, even one as close as Mars, is not only possible, in my opinion it's probable (again, within a certain set of conditions).
However, I think it's just fanciful to think that these lifeforms (A) evolved on a planet near enough to us that they COULD conceivably contact the Earth, (B) evolved in a similar way to humans, and (C) evolved so much more quickly than humans that they are able to achieve the beyond-light-speed travel it would require to GET to the Earth.
Solario

I don't think it's ignorant to say that life on Earth is a fluke. If it hadn't happen, who would have noticed? It could have been a possibility thousands upon thousands of time and it only has to succeed once. Really it all depends on circumstances. Enough room, regular gravity etc.
That being said, I still think there's a certain structure to physics and existence, so I'm not in agreement with that statement.
And I'm assuming everyone is at least partial familiar with Drake's Equation and the Fermi Paradox?
Krypto

(C) evolved so much more quickly than humans that they are able to achieve the beyond-light-speed travel it would require to GET to the Earth.
Who says they have to have evolved much more quickly than humans? If they have attained FTL travel by whatever means, they've most likely existed as a species far longer than we have, rather than starting out at the same time as us and simply evolving faster.
To understand how there might have been aliens that have visted us, simply look our species. What do we do? We send out all sorts of probes in search of other life. We're constantly looking to see if we're not alone in the universe. And when we ever do attain FTL travel, guess what we're going to do: We're going to be looking in search of other intelligent life forms. Well, that and looking for another inhabitable planet.
Of course, as some of our probes (Mars) have shown, accidents happen sometimes. :P
