Same deak, Sally. I've just given up on it, sadly enough.
Still, while this issue is better than number one, in my opinion, at least, we've still got the Freedom Phalanx bickering like mad. I really do think we could have used at least ONE issue of seeing them as an effective unit.
And it appears States is suffering from sudden jerk syndrome. Probably caught it from JLU- Superman.

Got mine today as well. Haven't missed a comic yet. For that matter I haven't ever gotten mine late and some times got mine a couple weeks before the month it's suppose to be for. I guess they know who's important and who's not. :p

Covers look cool, but I don't like Statesman's backround one bit.

For some reason all the Canucks seem to get the issues on time without any problems.

Probably because we secretly control the entire gaming industry.

I may have mine, but I tend to be a bit lazy checking my PO Box. I know it's been talked to death (I have to check the archives), but the first issue by Top Cow really did not rock my boat; No time to get emotionally involved with these characters. Heck, I know some of these characters, but seems like they changed the looks of many (of course, they seemed to change them in-game, too: No more black Sister Psyche).

And although Issue 12 was obviously rushed and had to quickly fill in an ending to a story that was suppossed to last much longer, it was a bit bitter sweet actually AND there is some emotional conection to the characters, even though it is rather tenious (sp?).

(When I get back from RL, I'll be in-game a bit more and trying to work on a SiG again :P )

Hey Gold Rush! Not seen you for a while!

Oh and about the comics - i've bought every single one except #12 - the one Xanatos is in. :( My comic store didn't have it in stock.

My honest opinion on this comic is a little jaded. The Surviving 8 don't really seem like the epitome of heroism*. More like regular people who lord it over others just because they're powers are fancier. I mean Sister Psyche was a mess, synapse was a...weirdo, Positron was just paranoid, and Statesman's motives made little sense for such an "inspirational leader". (The fact he's constatly trying to angst it out lone wolf style irritated me no end.) Manticore...well Manticore made sense to me, and he seemed a damn better leader than Statesman.

There also seemed a lack of unity in the team. But then maybe i'm used to seeing supergroups that are like a family. These guys just seemed like co-workers who weren't even on first name terms. (Might work for big tems - but for a five "person" group there needs to be a bond.)

The whole "you live for arguing" line absolutely irritated me. It made no sense - a superhero would NEVER say it - and it was just a prompt for the badguy to make a monologue from which Manticore could reply with a badass "no". OOOH SILENT BUT DEADLY! Pfah!

[Kills the rant before it grows]

In brief - the comics:
-Set up character lines too simply - they were predictable
-Didn't have inspirational characters
-The Lines the characters had weren't that good
-Character motivation needed improving
-More focus needed on the CoH Game World.
-"We hate heroes" - shut up pedestrians. We're not Xmen.

Oh a more...um...positive note, I thought the comic was well written (not the story though) And the artwork was bloody awesome. Still - I did prefer the story of the old one. Oh and ODYSSEUS WAS IN IT! WOOOO!

*Unlike the CohGuru heroes - who are SO much better written in my opinion. :)

I think that might be giving the writers too much credit, and it sure as hell would confuse a good portion of the fan base, but I happened to think of it and figured it would explain some things. Anyways, just a thought.

Oh, and Statesman's new origin is lame.

Hey Gold Rush! Not seen you for a while!

Yeah, RL has been keeping me jumping. Also needed a bit of a break from the game so it wouldn't burn me out. Now I am doing smaller jumps, so hope to at least be in game more and post here a bit more :)

Yeah, I am gonna have to agree with all of your points. Manticore shined over all. Just so much blah-de-blah-blahness in the rest of the characters and the world (and hardly any set-up as to WHAT went down that caused the heroes to run and hide). Heck, even the "crazy lady" is so bland! :sarcasm:

I gotta agree with Xanatos on this one for the most part. As I saw on a website posted somewhere here, the old comic may have been poorly written and drawn, it was at least recognizable as City of Heroes. This new comic isn't recognizable as the game we actually play in any way shape or form.

Also, if Lord Recluse only got rid of the powers of heroes in Paragon City, what are the rest of the worlds heroes doing? And what about all the natural and tech heroes that have no powers? This whole storyline bugs me, it's not only inconsistent with the game world, but it's inconsistant with itself.

I think the spell dampened all advanced gadgetry as well, and only within Paragon City. Like Manticore said in issue 1, most of the heroes left for other cities.

It's still lame. "All advanced gadgetry?" But cars and computers still work... TV's still work... Guns still work, and so I assume AR/Dev blasters would still work. And Natural Martial Arts heroes have no powers, where did THEY all go? I find it hard to believe that ALL the heroes would simply give up because they have no powers, nevermind the US FREAKING GOVERMNET!! Where's the army battling against Recluse's hold over the city?

Statesmen's new origin smells of Mark Waid changing character backgrounds to fit them into some lame-ass plot instead of fitting the lame-ass plot into the esrablished backgrounds. Mark Waid do this whenever he take over a comic book because he is Mark Waid.

Hey I buy (yes Buy) this freaking comic because I want to see my own characters appear within it (Yeah like that'll happen) not to read some poor excuse for a rehash of greek mythology. I expect super-powers to come back by issue #6 is not issue #3.

inkblaster
06-16-2005, 12:07 PM
Another issue I have is, there's 3 villains helping Statesman, who lost control of their powers like Positron, a Paragon Protector shooting energy, a CoT Life Mage doing magic, and a Reaper/Mortificator shooting fire???? Since when do Reapers and Mortificators do anything but hack and shoot poison darts?

Also, I don't think it's a Mark Waid thing, still think it's an future archetype/in game mechanics thing that's making States have such a cheesy origin. Remember he was originally magic item with his helmet.

Magna Harrier
06-16-2005, 02:11 PM
The whole new origion has been around at least as long as the Heroclix figure... it has the Lightning of Zeus (or some such) as an ability.
And while the new origion might be lame, I do like it better than "Hey, I went East, looked inside myself, and now I'm Superman." I'm sure it SOUNDS cool and all philosophical, but it also sounds like a background for a martial arts scrapper, not a guy who has lazer eyes, can fly, and live forever.

inkblaster
06-16-2005, 03:29 PM
Ok, Statesman Origin is now on it's 3rd incarnation(forgive the pun).

Pre-prebeta it was magical artifact, his helmet, and it was a full helmet not just the face mask.

Then, after NCSoft came on, it was inner will, also he hinted to some correlation to the City of Pax, when the Scrapper archetype walk through came out. The people in Pax also had powers related to their inner will.

Now, after launch, and HerClix figures, it's I drank from some fountain I found, that nobody else had found yet, or since, and I'm Zeus.

This one may have to stick though as they probably have this new archetype worked out.

Heard any other rumors of any other famous people who play CoH from time to time?

Still have to make a stop to my PO box to read this issue, but you know what.... This Statesman=Zeus origin thingie; I know it's probably to introduce a new hero-type in the game, but it pretty much smacks of Thor's origin in Marvel comics , although one poster did point out Shazam/Capt. Marvel.

Still smells more like Thor.

She is (or was, haven't seen her post anything on the official boards in a while) a player. I believe her board handle was VickieVee. She was even helping players flesh out their bios for a time and she wrote some fan fiction that was really neat. Neat enough that I wanted to read some of the stuff that she gets paid for (she is a fantasy author, do a search for her on Amazon.com).

Rather annoyed to see the "Hi, here's my origin" method of character introduction continue. One thing that I've been wondering, and I may as well ask here, is where are Bastion, Numina, and Backalley Brawler? Aren't they Phalanx members? Actually, now that I think about it, wouldn't Bastion and Numina be dead, since their powers are basically what keep them alive? (Bastion - dangit, I just can't call him Citadel - being a robot, and Numina being a spirit magically bound to this world) I'm probably thinking about it too much....

Man, Statesman's a dick. He's no Superman (http://www.superdickery.com/dick/1.html), but the way things are going, he could certainly give him a run for his money!

Spoiler down below, in black.

And you can tell that Manticore has definitely thought about shooting Statesman before. He totally deserved it too, the bastard.
