Its kind of neat, but they need to be a bit selective about the DC heroes they allow in. I mean, you could let Superman in and say there's an inherent magic about the fighters which let's everyone ignore his invulnerability...
...but what about Wonder Woman? She's almost as strong and tough as Superman, and she's at least as good a fighter as Batman to boot. No way does even Goro pose a threat to her, let alone most other more "normal" fighters.
And then what about Green Lantern? ...or Flash? ...and would Green Arrow fit in this thing, because I don't think so.
Aquaman, on the other hand, is of a more suitable power level and with his hook hand, you know he's a perfect fit. I'd like to see someone else pull that "Get over here!" routine on Scorpian for a change. :chuckle:
So... any word (or guesses) on what other DC characters will make the cut?

Hah, it's been a while since I saw that movie, but I thought it was pretty cool. Can't remember much though.
I remember loving the Scorpion fight scene and how they did his spear. Also the part when they first get on the island and Sub-Zero freezes and shatters a guy while they are eating... I think.
Like I said, it's been a while.

Good call on that, man.
Yeah, we ONLY are seeing Batman and Sub-Zero. Actually, I cannot think they would leave a classic icon as Superman out of this game. I think the key word, as in many of these match-ups is "Suspension of Disbelief". :p
There are many "third-tier" heroes they can go with; Wildcat, Batgirl, Nightwing, Huntress, Black Canary, etc (Lots of "Batman Family there).
I thought that was a movie poster.
It looks interesting. If I can play Nightwing I'm sold already. Nightwing, Green Lantern, and Dr. Fate. :D

Not sure why DC (the most PC of the comic companys) would pick to align themselves with one of the most infamously famous violent game series on the market. They should have hashed some things out and tried to do a Marvel Vs. DC in the old capcom style. Split the profits, bam. No idea why companys have to make it tougher than that.
Nerfed
04-21-2008, 12:17 AM
Infamously violent, sure... but that infamy translates into popularity.
Plus, DC's PC stance seems weakening in recent years (violent death of GL's girlfriend who was then stuffed in a refrigerator, rape of Sue Dibney, and various other mainstream continuity events that are rather brutal)...
...and the blood and fatalities of Mortal Kombat will be absent from this game.
Compromises abound. Dollars will be made. Everyone is a winner.!

Also, whichever of those Marvel/Capcom crossover games featured Juggernaut pretty much ruined the fun of those games for me. I just don't buy Juggy gettin' knocked on his ass by Ken or Ryu... let alone Chun Li.
The Hulk getting beaten by the same calibur of foes didn't help matters either.

For the record...
http://kotaku.com/382896/ed-boon-on-mk-vs-dc-making-sense
ok 1st off.....this IS MK8 - confirmed by Mortal Kombat Online's interview with Ed boon himself. It the 1st subject covered in the interview
MKO Interview: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gw2jqQjiqiM
2nd...this game WILL have "fatality-like finishers" proven by the same interview posted - check 7:05 into the interview. Boon also states at approx. 7:40 says "we're going to push it as far as we can to an M-rating and then step back 1 step" to a T-rated game
and yes, there is blood..as seen in the trailer
Further Confirmation: http://www.videogamer.com/xbox360/mortal_kombat_vs_dc_universe/preview-870.html
from the article: "Despite what you may have heard, there may well be blood in the game, just not streams of gushing blood as we're used to seeing from the series...Ed intends to include finishing moves, which will work similarly to fatalities in that they will be spectacular attacks designed to finish your opponent, but they won't involve tearing Batman's head off, or pulling Superman's heart out and showing it to him"

I'm not going to search to see if anyone answered this, but according to a rather in-depth article I was reading on this yesterday there will be just gallons of blood in this game. All of the MK characters WILL have Fatalities, same as the DC villains. Since the DC Super Heroes DON'T KILL they will have Brutaltalities, which is something they had in Ultimate MK3 where you would go into a huge combo and turn your opponent into bits.
So even though they won't kill them, it should be pretty neat.

Please tell me no Green Lanterns... the ring slingers aren't all that when it comes to one-on-one fisticuffs --although Hal Jordan did knock out Guy Gardner and put Batman on his ass with one punch (each). Still, its a fighting game, not so much a blast & drop glowing green objects on your foes and cage them behind energy bars kind of game.

07-13-2008, 08:42 PM
Oh no, don't misunderstand me... I know they could squeeze him in using power ring effects to simulate fighting, and they could probably make it look cool (though somewhat repetitive).
I'm just saying he's not a fighter. They should leave Green Lantern (any of 'em) out to make room for more melee characters. I'd hate to think a better choice got overlooked just to include the power ring guy.

They're Magic. Why go the BS, just say they're that strong and always have been. Although the guy that both Supes and Bats can punch out? Hmmm.

08-25-2008, 03:55 AM
You know, the "its magic" explanation for Superman is going to get stretched a little thin. I mean, sure some of the opponents are magic... but how does this explain Joker being able to fight Superman hand-to-hand? Or Deathstroke? Is Sonya magic??
And then there's what exactly does "magic" cover against Superman? Last I knew, he was as vulnerable to magical effects as anyone. Okay, so magical attacks can hurt him... does that mean every attack a magic using foe hurts him? Every last punch and kick? That's not how it works in the comics. And what about Superman's power? Being magic doesn't render foes immune to Superman's super strength or other powers (unless they're specifically enchanted to, I guess). So, how does Sub-Zero who can be beaten down by the likes of Batman or Johnny Cage survive even one hit from Superman?
Don't get me wrong, I still think the game looks like lots of fun, but... Superman really doesn't belong in it.
The Mystic
08-25-2008, 04:05 AM
Well, that's the issue with Superman. He's over powered. To incorporate him into a game you have to weaken him for balance issues but then he doesn't really feel like Superman.
Honestly, I would have rather this been a Marvel vs. DC video game. That would at least make more sense. If I do get this I'll just play with DC characters and Raiden. I'm not a huge fan of the MK Universe.
iggy880
08-25-2008, 02:39 PM
Well, I do agree Superman really would be to powerful, though he has relatively gotten his ass kicked without the presence of Magic and Kryptonite, like by Darkseid, but I will say he does still pwn. I mean, look at that video, he has cool, natural feeling combos for him, like ground smash to heat vision to freeze breath to hit.
Galactoman
08-25-2008, 02:43 PM
I wouldn't over-analyze Superman's presence in the game too much; it's not like they'll ever make a DC game without him. Besides, it's the sheer DUMBNESS of the game that makes it look really fun to me, lol.
iggy880
08-25-2008, 03:09 PM
I totally agree, it wouldn't be DC without Supes, and I definitely agree that you can't over analyze his presence. I just wanted to say magic may not be the only excuse they use.
Nerfed
08-25-2008, 04:28 PM
Maybe its the comic geek in me, I just don't think that was over-analysis... its pretty basic Superman stuff. Anyway, while I was criticizing, I'm not really complaining. As mentioned, it wouldn't really be a DC game without Supes. I'm just pointing out how the "its" magic excuse is going end up feeling over-used.
Dr Jack Wolfe
08-26-2008, 04:06 AM

I just don't like to see licenses used so far outta context is all. Putting a texture map just doesn't do it. I know, I know Soul Caliber IV. I think I'm just prejuduce against MK games.

Actually it is pretty much out of the question, I think it was pretty much both companies being overly paranoid that their characters would somehow come of weaker then the other company's or that even just seeing one loose to the opposition's would reflect negatively. Kinda like the BS where car companies won't/wouldn't license their cars to games that show car damage as they want nothing but a pristine marketable image, ignoring that the realistic physics can champion the power and feel of the car.
@Wids: Again, I am no big DC fan(go Marvel :P) and while I am psyched for the more or less campy awesomeness of the game, I do know that wouldn't work as Supes would loose all ability...unless there were two suns, one red and one yellow that I actually don't know how it would affect him but I assume weakened resistance to damage but still empowered. Though, as far as I know(and correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't followed to closely) they haven't let the 'secret' of Superman's pansification yet.

Then he's under the effects of Aquamarine Kryptonite, which I just made up, and which dulls the effects of his powers without removing them, and leaves him vulnerable to attacks from people with ninja masks and/or four arms and/or sunglasses.
Also, the game is taking place on Earth 35, where Superheroes are weaker and spend all their time fighting ninjas against similar backdrops.
Either that, or Mr. Mxyzptlk is just ****ing with the Justice League.
There, I just made the game official DC canon.

I think they're fighting in Metropolis in one scene, so its not all taking place in Outworld. Red sun would take all of Superman's powers, so no flying or heat vision etc. Rare made-up kryptonites don't count.
If they're going to go magic, I think it'd be better to explain it as Superman himself has been weakened by a magical curse with the whole intermixing of worlds rather than to say magic characters can hurt him... or, if you want to go the sun route: red sun robs superman of his powers, yellow sun empowers him... maybe the sun has turned orange during the crossover, thus limiting him without making him powerless.
Of course, this doesn't explain how Wonder Woman will be affected since she's almost as heavy a hitter as Superman is and she has no kryptonite, solar dependancy, or other weakness to bring her down to everyone else's level. Not to mention the fact that if they're engaged in mortal combat, she's the most likely of heroes to have a fatality. I wanna see her grab someone's head and spin it around. :D

Well, for Supes, I stand by that he can even be downed by sheer brute force, just it takes a lot. I also think the same can go for Wonder Woman, she is more or less weaker then Superman if you really get down to it. I mean she can take a beating, but she's not bullet proof, she needs to use the gauntlets while Superman is. I mean, she has actually been knocked down and even unconscious, if memory serves, on at least a couple occasions in like JL and JLU, so I don't think that'll be an issue. She should be more 'durable' then say Flash in combat but they'll have to balance her attack speed to balance that because you can't weaken her from what fans know either.

The Outworld has a red sun. There. Does everyone feel better about Superman fighting in this game now? :P
No, because he has no physical training. Everything comes from the yellow sun. Dude can't take a punch without being invulnerable.
WHY SO SERIOUS? O_o
Superman's trading blows with a Hellspawned ninja that breathes fire and has a skull for a face. Do you really expect reality to hold sway here? Stop overanalyzing the game like a physics nerd and revel in the awesome already. Respect the Rule of Cool! Respect it!
LOL.
That doesn't work for you guys?
Then he's under the effects of Aquamarine Kryptonite, which I just made up, and which dulls the effects of his powers without removing them, and leaves him vulnerable to attacks from people with ninja masks and/or four arms and/or sunglasses.
Also, the game is taking place on Earth 35, where Superheroes are weaker and spend all their time fighting ninjas against similar backdrops.
Either that, or Mr. Mxyzptlk is just ****ing with the Justice League.
There, I just made the game official DC canon.
Why not go whole hog? Mr. Myxwhatever sprinkled Aquamarine Kryptonite all over the Outworld of Earth 35, which has a red sun that's currently in solar eclipse so its weakening effects are diminished (but not negated), and Shang Tsung siphoned off about half of Superman's soul and ninja magic is handling the rest?
Works for me! :D

Johnny Cage is rumored to be a hidden character. I just read a complaint about no Lobo and must admit, I hadn't thought about him so far. But he'd be perfect!!!

Yep, now D-Toid is also saying Midway came right out and said the list is true. As much as I loved Baraka from MK II, I'd love to see Cage and Goro on the MK side and Plasticman and Lobo on the DC side.

Any proof of that? I mean with another character with the exact name I wouldn't just assume that. I mean, unless you heard somewhere that it will be him then I'll believe you but these are the names as released officially, or as they should be in game(I'd assume) I doubt DC would have one of their characters under another name simply because he may be better known under a different name.

DC has always had that issue with Cap/Shazam due to Marvel claiming the right to the name Captain Marvel as a comic title as well as the character's name. DC brought back their Captain Marvel too late, so they named his book "The Power of Shazam!" And, even though its the name of the wizard who gave Cap his powers, most people associate Shazam with Cap himself because of this usage over decades.

Thanks for the proof. I just didn't want to get my hopes up, not that I am a Captain Marvel, or even DC fan, but I may pick up this game and didn't want to expect him and get the wizard.
Also, thanks for the info Nerfed.

Yeah. I think the official rule is that DC can refer to him as Captain Marvel INSIDE comics, but not in any titles or merchandise (action-figures, heroclix, in this case videogames). DC Direct recently put out a pretty cool line of action-figures (Dr. Sivana came with a little tiny Mr. Mind!) but the packaging was all weird because it referred to the characters as "Captain", "Captain Junior", "Mary", etc. I've always thought it was kind of stupid since Captain Marvel's been around since way before Timely Comics even existed, let alone Marvel Comics... but DC never has tried too hard to protect the characters they acquired through hostile takeovers of other companies. Just ask The Human Bomb, lol.
I still think this game looks awesomely stupid and fun.

For God's sake it's an MK title.
And I'm surprised Green Arrow, Zantanna, and Nightwing didn't make it into the game. There are a lot of combo possibilities with those three characters. Green Arrow would have an array of arrows to chose from, Zantanna is magic-based, and Nightwing is a hand-to-hand combatant with escrima sticks. They would have been fun characters to use.

I almost didn't think they'd cut it because the way the guy showing off the fatality said "So you can see this isn't Mortal Kombat Lite, Joker will really blow your head off!"
I wish they'd have two fatalities per character. I'd love to see The Joker with a killing joy buzzer like Jack Nickleson's Joker in the Tim Burton Batman.

I forget where the video was, but it said it showed his fatality, and I'm like 'That was cool, I wanna see it again' and it was crappy card throwing, I hope the site was just showing like an early version/idea but it was like a month after we saw the gun one.

I read that Joker's fatality is still the same, but the real shot is done offscreen. Anyway, here's a video that shows a wide array of special moves. People are complaining a lot about the animations, but I like them:

Green Lantern's finish isn't great, he lifts them in a ball, then compresses it on them.
Flash is pretty cool, runs in circles causing the enemy to rise in the air, then jumps and slams them down.
As for the Joker Fatality with the cards, check this video (http://www.gamesradar.com/video/v-20081016173518656041)(pretty cool stuff overall) but the fatality starts around 3:58
