I just ordered Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich for 9$, but was playing around with a "demo" and skins and such. Sadly the "demo" was broken and I couldn't get the skin to work in the game past the character customizing screen [in other words it switched to the original skin when actually playing]. Either way.. I had fun making the skin..

Heh, I know alot of people used to play and have custom skins themselves... any chance we could get some online stuff going for fun sometime? I'll make more skins if need be.. o.o

I'd have to reinstall it and load my skins from backup disks. Right now I don't have a lot of extra time to do that.

I *think* I've got the game still floating around.
It's one of those times I purchased the game on a whim and hated the play of it, so I never touched it after I played a few hours after the install.

So how do you make custom skins? And can you make custom powers?
Im going to try and "acquire" the game right now...

You basically.. pick a power, but can customize it's look and what it does. It actually looked complicated at first.. it's not to hard though.

My Charon skin for Freedom Force owns. It has a wrist-mounted blade, collapsable staff, etc.

It's just a shame that the online play kind of blows.

I never played it.
Maybe Imp will give me his copy since he doesn't like it. :)

Here's a skin I made for one of my characters. His name is Silver Shadow.

I also have a bunch of skins like...

I have somewhere over 330 skins in my Freedom Force library archive.

Man, this thread almost makes me want to dig out my copy and re-load it. That game was a blast. :)

Ok, so I may have to get this, bargain bins should be friendly enough to my budget, and this game. Just I may request a skin(if I get it) because I've tried skin design before in other games with no avail
This thread makes me want to go ahead and obtain it through means which aren't necessarily okay with the makers of this game. :D I used to love this, and loved it even more when I found out that I could slap on any skin to a character. I use to download all of the custom power packs, etc. Green Lantern, Flash, Batman, Jean Grey. I loved it.

So how do you make custom skins?
I feel this question has yet to be adequately answered... :eyebrow:

If I remember it right, they work off TGA's so you'll need an art program that can handle them. Gimp is a freebie and works great.
After downloading a base skin, color it how you wish on the parts (It'll br broken down into sections already. Once done, you simply place in the skins folder, in it's own folder and bammo. the game will see the new skin.

If anyone wants skins of Charon, Wolf and Sable Phoenix (I dunno, perhaps you feel like playing through the game with the Bone Squad like I did. ;)) I did some Freedom Force whoring a few years back and have awesome skins for all three which include all their signature elements. Wolf has bone claws, Charon has his staff, Sable has the cape and mask she could never get in-game, etc.
I also have Xanatos, Statesman... Um... I dunno, probably some others.

I remember playing the original FF years ago (never did the sequel). I'm no artist so I never really made my own characters, but I did mess around with the pre-made game characters a lot. IIRC, the Minuteman was the best overall character to use, but Mentor and the Liberty Lad were strong too.

I'd worked with TGAs before when making skins for Jedi Outcast. Really it's not hard at all.. you just have to figure out what part of the jumbled image is wrapping what part of the model.

I would imagine it to be easy enough to take another skin that has highly recognizable costume pieces and use that as a model to draw & colo over so that you can get what you want where you want it.

Ok I got it, but have no idea where to begin on making my own skins. Tutorials seem out of date too. Help puh-lease!
I didn't even see the question about how you go about coloring the skins.
The models are "unwrapped" (meaning that the triangles that make up the model's shapes are laid out on a flat, 2D surface) as a UV-map. UV = Up, Down, Left, and Right. This is a common form of texturing in 3D programs. It's typically called "painting textures". You do this so that when the triangles are placed back into a 3D perspective with that newly painted texture, everything lines up to where you want it, and no matter how much the model is scaled/sized, that UV-map will always stay the same.
And speaking of which I've got UV-maps to turn into class tomorrow. :grr: I need a 5 day vacation. :D

Yea, yea. Double post.
I don't know where you would find laid out meshes from, but I assume they would already be in the form of a UV so those who don't have access to a 3D program can freely do this themselves. All you really need is a art/paint program I believe.
This is a UV-map:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y210/BiggShuggs/UV.jpg
And I'm pretty sure it's the same for the Freedom Force models. The model is just laid out, and here (what appears to be some sort of tiger), it looks like a rug. What you would do is take it into a art/paint program and place your colors where you want them. If you wanted (for instance) a big letter T on the back of your tiger for some reason here is where you could do this.
Now I'm speaking from what I only know through what I've taught myself/been taught/read. I'm not into video game design so I'm not sure how it works, but I'm pretty positive that it all works the same. You'd probably be better off asking Tortuga (they have a SG over on the Champs forums with a lot of the old Freedom Force crew who use to make skins) for help.

Yeah, so for the life of me I cant figure this out. Would anyone want to make me a custom skin of Cloud? :D
Did you find the model mesh?

Yes, I get the concept of it all. But, just cant find where to get skins and how to paint them so they look good.

Could someone link me a mesh, and or make me one of The Cometeer based on this (http://baquitania.deviantart.com/art/The-Cometeer-2-80662928) please and thank you to those skilled as such.
I've found this: http://members.cox.net/horton551/skin-base.html
Not sure if it's UV-mapped. Going to try it now since I'm wide awake. :grr:
Here's a library of Freedom Force mesh/skin links: http://www.venustechstudios.com/Links/ff-links.htm
Google is your friend, people! :D :P

There are much better bases out there from what I remember. I hate to refer you to it, but Freedom-Reborn.net has a slew of skins and guides.
