I may be crazy but Alumette's posting about wines in the food thread and others gave me the idea for this thread.
Since I am a wine fan and I'm always looking to try new wines, I'm often left wondering what specific wine she had and if she liked it or not. Then I figured there must be more people here that drink wine and other wonderful beverages.
So post 'em here. What you had, was it good, where did you get it?
P.S. It doesn't have to be wine, you can post about anything beverage related.
To start. Yesterday I had a 2000 Napa Valley Ravenswood Zinfandel. I got a deal on it at the grocery store and it was very good. Definitely recommend.
And just as a warning I was at a party and had a 2002 Forestville Merlot and it was aweful. You can get it at any grocery store for very little money, but don't. It is not what wine should taste like.

I love the Ravenswood Zin! Do you know which one you had? They have several vineyards. I never remember which one I like the best but they're always consistently good. I agree the 02 is probably the best. I think the Mendocino County is the one I prefer... well gee, now I guess I'll *have* to go back to the store and buy a bunch for "research." Ah, the torture.
JR, I also highly recommend the Rex Goliath 47-Pound Rooster. Their Pinot Noir is one of my favorites (although in recent years it's not as impressive as... I think the 00 or 01... can't remember). Still, it's a good, reliable, inexpensive wine. They also have a Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon. I poured the CS for the first time tonight and enjoyed it, although it had more tannins than I tend to prefer.
I am a *huge* fan of finding good wines for under $10. It is possible. I *rarely* spend more than 10 or 12 dollars on a bottle. I think life is too short to drink crappy wine; but it's also foolish to spend too much for wine. Expensive wines aren't always good, and vice versa.
That said, occasionally an expensive wine is well worth the price, but there's a lot of good stuff out there that won't break the bank.
:)
What a fabulous idea for a thread, JR! <happy dances>

Heh, this one time this guy forced me to drink wine in an Italian resaurant.. Any other time I would've been like "sure" but that particular time I didn't really care to try any of it. He asked me if I wanted some, I said no, and he said something along the lines of "Oh, but you can have some anyway!" and poured me some... I didn't drink it... Didn't really like whatever wine it was he had.
EDIT- Alumette, better make sure this time to do the wine-tasing AWAY from that brand spankin' new keyboard!

lol Tarky. You're too young to do the kind of research I'm talking about. You have to be 21. ;)
I've had almost all the Ravenswood wines, and I like most of them, I can just never remember which ones I like best. This gives me a perfect excuse to drink more. ;)
My cousin owns a winery in Paso Robles. Still trying to make it out there for a visit. I don't think I'd ever leave. ;)
As to other beverages, I've been on a caipirinha kick lately. I think because it's summer and I plan to learn Portuguese.

It was the Napa Valley Ravenswood. I have also had several of them and like them all too. :)

This is exactly my perspective. Though I do have some favorites in the $15 -$20 range that I splurge on occasionally.
Today I had 2003 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Fume Blanc. I think the Napa one is about $16 but the North Coast one is about $7. Both are very good and the Napa valley one probably isn't worth the extra $9. It's a very good white wine. I'm always looking for good whites as I am not a big fan of the standard chardonnay.

I like sierra mist the best of all lemon/lime drinks. Crsp, but not overly carbonated like 7up and sprite.

Ok, I don't know much about wines, but my favorites are a good Lambrusco (sp? a sweet italian red) and Met (wine made from honey) from a local store in the neighbouring village. Nothing better than a cool Met in summer or hot Met in winter.
If I can't get those I'm most likely to drink:
Beer - Becks (one of germans best beers)
Cocktail - Mai Tai (refreshing and sweet)

Gads... I have a big list of the stuff I like to drink. Here goes:
Coffee: Don't drink much coffee anymore though there is a coffee roasting factory in Tampa that has a breakfast blend I like.
Tea: Hot: Any unflavored black tea or unfalvored rooibos tea. Iced: unsweetened, no lemon.
Wine: This is a weak area for me. Occasionally a glass of house red or white when we go out.
Spirits: Sailor Jerry Rum (http://www.gyroworldwide.com/i/sailorjerry/rum_1.jpg) and Coke.(non of that Captain Morgan rotgut)
Beer: Living with a beer snob has taught me a thing or two about the different flavors that can be found in different beers. It has also colored my opinion about certain brewing companies and their products. So I'll drink anything NOT made by the evil empire of brewing (http://www.anheuser-busch.com/).

I hate wine with a fiery passion that springs eternal from the depths of Hell.
I discovered a new drink this weekend. It's a liqueur called Just Desserts (http://www.creamygood.com/chocchip.html) that's chocolate chip cookie flavored. It tastes just like the cereal "Cookie Crisp". The first bottle was so good, we sent a sober driver back to the store for two more bottles!

Whey protein shakes....mmmmm. Just the thing before a long rehearsal. What do you mix yours with, Stan?
As to what I *will be* drinking later on tonight: CHAMPAGNE!!!!
I need to celebrate the end of another semester's grading. :)
For now, though, it's back to the calculator. *sigh*
I had a small triumph a couple weeks ago.
When I was studying abroad in Italy last year, I found a Chianti that I really really liked in the dinky little grocery store in the dinky little town where I was staying. I liked it so much that I bought another bottle to bring home to the US.
Now, to give some perspective, I looked for this particular brand of wine in every grocery store or wine shop I went into in Italy, as well as in America when I got back. I could only find it in that one grocery store. Nowhere else.
Until two weeks ago.
When it was in my local Thriftway.
I was so happy I almost cried.
For the record, it was San Felice Chianti Classico, 2001. Around $13. Brown bottle, red and gold label of a soldier on a horse.

Stan: yeah, sometimes I add water, sometimes skim milk. A couple times I've mixed the vanilla powder with sugar-free OJ. Tastes just like a dreamsicle (sorta). :) Depends how much weight I'm trying to lose and how fast.
...And LARKE! For a second there I thought you were gonna say, "Straight vodka: can't drink it anymore. Drank it too much when I was pregnant and..."
Heh. But we know from the super-adorable pic you posted in the RL picture thread that you're a responsible, loving mom. ;)
Back to wines: One of my favorite inexpensive whites is the Wollersheim Winery Prairie Fume. It's usually around $7-8/bottle, and is just a nice middle-of-the-road (in terms of dry vs. sweet) summery white table wine. Very versatile, too. It's kind of my default when I need a white and am not sure what to pour. Since tax laws vary from state to state and determine which wines can be sold in which states, I don't know if you all can get it where you live; but if you can, it's worth a try. :)

Last month the Supreme Court declared that state laws could not bar residents from having wine shipped to their homes from out of state wineries they visited in person or on the internet. Therefore, if you can find it on wine.com or a similar site you can have it shipped to you. :D

*starts singing the Hallelujah Chorus at the top of her lungs, greatly annoying the neighbors.*
Well then, everyone, check out Wollersheim Winery's Prairie Fume (http://www.wollersheim.com/)
Their Pinot Noir is relatively new, and isn't bad. The Prairie Fume is their signature varietal. Their River Gold is so sweet it makes me want to die (and not in a good way :barf: ), and their Domaine Reserve is quite nice. The others I either haven't tried, or haven't tried in a really long time, so I couldn't say.

Tonight... once again, Napa Valley Ravenswood Zin. 2001 this time instead of 2000. Very good, it was even better than the 2000. I got it on sale at Beverages and More for 11.99.
