I hate any NFC East team that's not Washington. Only I'm torn on this one. I really wanted to see the Patriots make NFL history, but at the same time it's cool to see Eli and Peyton both have superbowl rings.

I live in New Jersey and I'm as diehard of a Jets' fan as you will find. I live for football. The Patriots' season really took a toll on me because I absolutely hate cheaters. The whole steroid issue in baseball is why I no longer watch it. Because of that, I did not watch the game until the very end. I thought I was turning on House but the game was still on...lol.
Since I live in NJ, I have to put up with a lot of Giants' fans. One of them being my mother...lol. Another is my boss at my full time job. Tomorrow should be interesting.
I also have a part time job on the weekends in a supermarket. Sundays we're allowed to wear jerseys and team related stuff. So I had my Jets' hat and jersey on. Just about every other customer coming in had some Giants' stuff on. I was almost sick because you just know they jumped right on that bandwagon.
With all that being said, I'm SOOO glad the Giants won. I hate Bill Belichick with a passion. The guy is a total ****. Tom Brady is a great player...when things are going good. That arrogant smirk of his...I'm glad it got knocked off of his smug face.
Cheaters never win. Well, they won 18 times, but as I'll be calling the Pats' 2007 season: "The Perfect Season...that never was". Oh so close, and I couldn't be happier. All of those records they broke this year mean absolutely ****.
Again, I love it :)

Anybody else glad the Giants won?
Nope! Had nothing to do with the Patriots though. I wanted the Pats to win so Mercury Morris and the rest of the asshats from the 70 Dolphins could fade back into obscurity where they belong. Seriously. I was getting tired of that old man talking about how the game is easier now. Yeah, sure it is. When your "all world" offensive guard is manhandling people at 265 lbs, try doing that when the d-linemen are 300+ on average and run 4.6 40s.
I'm glad Strahan got his ring so he can go out on top. I'm sad Junior didn't get his though. The only thing I hate about the Giants winning is the fact that now folks are going to try to put Eli in the same class as quarterbacks like his brother, Brady, Favre, Montana, Young, and Elway. He's not. He's a solid quarterback that works well within a conservative system. He's not the kind of quarterback people specifically gameplan to stop.
As far as cheating goes, okay. Anyone who has played organized football knows that they teach you to "steal" the other teams signals. The difference is, you do it in the film room from the coaches' tape, not from a video of coaches signals. He went too far and paid for it. Odd how people get so outraged about this but don't say a peep about "the Roy Williams rule" which could actually end careers.

Yeah I have to admit I like seeing Mr. Strahan get his ring. In my opinion he is one of the few best and most sincere players in football, so it's nice to see him get his rewards. And I agree. While I think it's cool the Manning brothers both have superbowl rings to make daddy proud, Eli is not really a great quarterback.

Seriously, I wish everyone would just get the whole "I hate cheaters" thing out of their ass. The bottom line is every NFL team has done it. Other coaches have admitted they did it and that 'sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't, but we've all done it.'
I'm not saying I approve of cheating, so please don't put words in mouth. I'm just saying that while we all agree it's wrong, if you're going to hate one team for it then you'd better hate them all.

The nice thing about the '72 Dolphins is that they don't really claim to be the best team ever, and even us Dolphins fans are kind of iffy on whether they or the '84 Marino Dolphins were better. If a team like the Patriots ever pulls it off, it's going to be used as a bludgeon for Greatest Team Ever.
The champagne celebration thing is a bit overblown anyways. The don't rent out the Bellagio or anything. They just have a glass of champagne with a bunch of old friends. Usually over the phone.
And the supposed cheating thing isn't really much of anything. The big deal there was that New England did something specifically after the commissioner told them not to. And they paid the price in draft picks. Nobody professional seems to believe that it gave them much of an advantage, and I think the 18 wins this year proves that.
As for the Patriots, good. I have a hard time feeling sorry for anyone whose team has won that many Superbowls in the last six years. I'd be against them even if they weren't division rivals. Running up the score all year hasn't really helped change any minds. I know it sounds weird, but there is a sort of karma in football. Not in a moral sense, but just in the way the game is played.

I gotta disagree. It was one of the greatest Super Bowls I have seen in a long while. Everyone at my house last night was on the edges of their seats watching it. Just an amazing game, nail-biter to the very end. I absolutely loved seeing Brady get crushed repeatedly. The Giants' defense basically shutdown his "big pass" game. I could barely watch those last 4 plays just knowing that Brady was gonna complete some crazy 75 yard pass into the end zone.

Neither the Packers nor the Steelers have ever had a "perfect" season. They have always had to fight for what they get. It's boring to watch a team that can beat everyone they come against. Football is not just about athletics. It's about drama. And where is the drama in watching an undefeatable team?
Plus, I just don't like Tom Brady. He rubs me the wrong way. I can't even put my finger on it.

Actually, I'd heard him all season and right after the game last night over the phone on ESPN. He's struck me, especially last night, as somebody that's sick of being interviewed 80 bazillion times every time somebody comes close to the undefeated season. He almost came out and said as much point blank after the game last night. People kept asking him how he felt about the game last night, and his response was basically "Uh, hello! It's the Giants' night here guys, why are you acting like it's mine?" This whole thing of the 72 Dolphins hating the Pats this year I think is a creation of the media more then anything else. Conflict is interesting, it gets people to watch.

I'm glad the Giants won, but only cause my brother gets to enjoy a sweet victory. The Giants were not the better team, but they were the better team last night.
Grats Giants and fans.
As far as the "cheating" thing goes...will people just STFU about that already. It wasn't cheating. You are allowed to film opposin coaches. Just not from the sidelines. So if anything the Pats are dumb and should have done what other ex-coaches said they should have done and just put someone in the stand with a cam-corder and passed the tape off to the coaching staff before half time. And even if they did there's no way the would have been able to gain an advantage that day. NFL teams use multiple signals, one live multiple fake. If you don't know which one is real, your guessing. Just let the freakin' cheating thing drop already!

I was happy, if my team ain't in it, I cheer for the NFC. I
disagree with Burbs though, I love a good Defensive tussle, and the Giants, even though they trailed for a good bit of the game, kicked the hell out of the Pats.
I thought Belichek acted like a punk at the end there, and I guess Brady will have to console himself by polishing his 3 rings, making out with his supermodel girlfriend, and reminding himself that he's good looking and rich.
This will still be a tough pill for the Pats to swallow, though, so there's that.

It wasn't cheating.
Cheating is defined as violating rules deliberately. There was a rule in place to stop the very thing the Pats were caught doing.
But ok, I'll be like everyone else that wants it to go away. Maybe if we're lucky, the cheating can become as rampant as in baseball. Won't that be fun.
I'm sorry, but there are some people, myself included, that don't like cheaters. If you want to look the other way, that's fine, but don't tell me and others to "STFU" just because we don't like what the Patriots did. Respect others opinions on the matter and I'll respect yours.

I don't get this 'running up the score' thing. Could someone explain why it's bad to continue scoring points just because you're ahead? Has no one seen teams come back from 20+ points down to win (or come damn close to winning)? What happens to the coach who decides to sit on the ball, stop blitzing (cuz it might cause turnovers!), and then walks out with an L? How many boxers say before a fight, "I'm looking forward to a split decision, Jim!"? How much of a message does it send to your next few opponents when you score 24 in the first half and then just "hold on" to win by 4? Isn't a better message sent by completely and utterly obliterating an opponent so the next few teams you meet have eyes like Michael Spinks right before he faced Mike Tyson?
I've been on teams that "ran up the score" and I don't get what the big deal is. Hell, I've coached teams that ran all-out blitzes when up by 42. If you're up by 14 on last year's Colts, do you "run out the clock" in the 3rd quarter?
And Emerald Sky, the rules are violated willingly on every play of every game at every level. Someone is held or tripped or leg-whipped or interfered with on every snap, without exception. Before the rules were changed last season, it was customary for defensive backs to practically maul receivers off the line. Oddly, you still had greats like Largent, Rice, Toon, Monk, and the like, able to do their jobs with little fanfare. If you flag every infraction, the field would have more yellow on it than green. Don't even try to compare baseball's problems with this perceived issue in football. The two don't compute and aren't the least bit similar. You can say 'cheating is cheating' but you'd be wrong. Seriously, read any number of statements from people who played from Conrad Dobler to Mark Schlereth (aka "Stink") and they'll readily admit to holding, tripping, etc on nearly every play they were involved in. The key was to do it in such a way where the officials won't see or won't pay attention to it. That kind of play is TAUGHT by offensive line coaches at every level of play. "If you do it, don't get caught.". John Teerlinck taught it, Alex Gibbs teaches it, and it's still taught in high schools and colleges. You know, technically it's against the rules for an o-lineman to shove an opponents pads up into his throat but it's done. Remember Jim Burt from the '86 Giants? That was one reason he wore his uniform like he did.
Anyway, the Pats' penalty was more a help than a hindrance. They still have a HIGH first round pick (from the Niners, if I recall) and now, they don't have to worry about signing TWO first round picks. Happy cap! There's bound to be a team starving for someone near the top ten and willing to do what the Browns did last year to get Brady Quinn. That means more picks in the later rounds (including one that might turn out to be a Brady level steal). Also, neat dude named Lance Briggs is a free agent and would fit nicely opposite Adalius.
Emerald Sky
02-05-2008, 03:13 AM
Oh ok, so since others cheat, it's ok. Great logic.
The Pats blatently try to get around whatever rule they can. Their motto is "if you aren't cheating, you aren't trying".
Hell, Mangini even knew about what they were doing and they still tried to do it. Which brings up something else interesting...the tapes that they gave to the NFL were from 2006 and the 2007 preseason. If they were doing it when Mangini was there, where was that info? They probably destroyed it before handing it over to the NFL and said "this is all we have". No way were they only doing this in 2006 and this preseason if Mangini knew about it and he didn't come to the Jets until 2006.
And it is EXACTLY like the **** that goes on in baseball. MLB knew their players were juicing but did nothing to stop it. The integrity of the game is forever tarnished because they did nothing to stop it from occurring before it got out of control. Hopefully because of this team's will think twice about doing it because now there is precedent. Maybe if MLB had stepped in instead of turning a blind eye to it maybe it wouldn't be such a joke right now. I know several people who no longer watch because of everything that's gone on.

Just like the baseball players who got caught juicing. I am sure there are MANY other players juicing in the league, but it does not make it any less horrible and wrong.

Sorry, but once you get past the 18 wins and the record-setting offense and the truckload of players who are headed for the Pro Bowl, you still are left with a team that was at the wrong end of one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history. The sobering reality is victory was there, and then it was not there. All in the blink of an eye.
Disaster? Consider:
• Aging members of the undefeated 1972 Dolphins are going to spend the rest of the week cracking open bottles of champagne and laughing their butts off. Just say the name Mercury Morris, and you’re going to want to hit something. In the end, the Merc wins.
• New York sports fans, absent a championship since the Yankees took down the Mets in the 2000 World Series, are back in business again. And they will let you know it as often as possible. Don’t be surprised if some kind of “Pats choke! Pats choke! Pats choke!” chant becomes a staple at Yankee Stadium this season.
• The “dynasty” talk is dead, buried. You lose the right to call your team a dynasty when said team now has gone three straight seasons without delivering a championship. During the season, it became popular for national pundits to put it out there that the Patriots are the new Yankees. It turns out they are correct in ways they didn’t even consider: The Yanks, for all their ongoing regular-season success, have not won it all in eight years.
• You don’t get to brag to other fans about the undefeated regular season. They’ll just throw a little Eli Manning in your face, and that will be that.
• Speaking of Eli, this makes two seasons in a row that a Manning is responsible for a shocking end to a Patriots season. First Peyton, now Eli. For now, the Manning family’s days of being stymied at the hands of the Patriots are over. Just a couple of years ago, it would have been rude to even say the word “Patriots” in the Manning house. Archie would slam a fist down on the table. Olivia would turn away and look out the window. Now, say the word “Patriots” and Daddy Archie will stand up and shout, “A toast!”
• Once again, Pats coach Bill Belichick is going to be painted as ungracious in defeat. While one can only imagine where this latest Camera-gate business is going, rest assured Belichick isn’t going to get a lot of sympathy outside New England. Yes, the Pats weren’t going to stage some kind of miraculous comeback once they turned the ball over on downs with 1 second on the clock. But Belichick doesn’t get to decide when a game ends. He is not the only coach in history who has suffered a stunning defeat.
• Another kind of “perfect season” has been lost: The Red Sox won the World Series, the Pats were going to win the Super Bowl, and then the entire region was going to turn to the Celtics to see if they could keep this thing going. Fans still will turn to the Celtics, naturally, only now it will be for therapy.
But there is one silver lining. Week after week, as the Patriots took yet another step toward perfection, there always would be some talking head who would ask if Camera-gate would “taint” their season.
As it happened, Camera-gate did not taint New England’s season.
Super Bowl XLII tainted the Patriots’ season.

I actually saw nothing wrong with what he did. Why the **** would you stick around for one last second? NOTHING can happen in football in ONE second.
Why? Because it's your job as a coach. It doesn't matter if there's 1 second, or 15 minutes on the clock. It's the principle of the matter, you stay until the game is finished, you don't run off into the middle of the field causing a huge distraction and delaying the game, and then run off into the locker rooms because you're pissed that you lost. It's completely unprofessional as a head coach of the NFL, you know, someone who gets paid MILLIONS to do their job.
(And for the record, anything can happen in one second. Well, if you're on offense you can still do something. If there's a defensive penalty you can still play at 0 seconds. Few seasons ago the Chiefs got a game winning touchdown that way, with 0 seconds on the clock. Best. Second. Ever. :p)

Krypto, at the time they ran onto the field the clock had no time left, then the refs added that one second and everyone had to be cleared off.

No, there was 1 second on the clock the entire time. Even the douchy guy with the flag ran onto the field with him, waving at Belichick and telling him to come back.

I know what I saw, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed, you don't storm the field with one second left. Anyway, not going to argue, was surprised he left but I wouldn't have wanted to waste my time out there either.

I'm kind of glad I didn't bother watching the whole game. Though based on the description, I'd say coach is an ass. It's called sportsmanship. He should get some. And so should Brady and Moss.
Meh, I don't really care. Next year: GO STEELERS!!! :D

I suggest you watch it again, then. :eyebrow:
You don't have someone waving a flag at you telling you to go back to the sidelines when there's 0 seconds on the clock, either. Except, that happened, because there was still 1 second on the clock.

You go back and watch it, I don't really plan on it. I have work and stuff to do :P

From what I remember, the clock did run out (it hit zero) and people started rushing the field, THEN they added one second back on the clock. So rushing the field = not their fault. Not sticking around for the last play = their fault. But whatever, it's only football.

You're right, but Belichick did have the guy waving him back.
You can say it's only football, but these people are being paid millions of dollars.

From what I remember people came on the field right after the Pats 4th down failed. Which left at least one second on the clock.

The super-what now? ;)
That's the first time I've sat through an entire Super Bowl. I was pretty worse for wear and spent the duration slightly bemused but I was really quite disgusted at the premature pitch invasion. I'd already been caught off guard with the rushing hordes of kids that have never heard of Tom Petty storming it once.
It was as if no-one had any respect for the game or its players, I assumed from the BBC American commentary that that sort of thing was allowed and happened regularly considering they didn't seem too phased by it. I'm glad to hear it isn't and doesn't because I found it all very unsporting. And if there's anything I've learned about American football from that one game it's that the entire sport seems to be structured to make every single second as imporant as the last.
All in all I actually quite enjoyed it but it's a bit too slow for me, I left to get some cigarettes, came back and only about 40 seconds of the game had passed.

Unfortunately, American Football has deteriorated in the last decade or so. You want to some REAL play, get ahold of some of the games from the 60's and 70's. Those guys played FOOTBALL. Not this giant Gatorade commercial you see nowadays.

I think Moss might have hurt his ankle on one of the final plays of the game. I haven't seen a replay but it's possible that one of the defenders came down on his ankle. I did read he was limping noticeably when he was going to the podium after the game.
What should be interesting in the Pro Bowl will be seeing Osi lining up against Matt Light, the LT from the Pats. I can only imagine the trash talking that's going to be coming his way from Osi:
"Hey Matt, we missed you at the parade for the Super Bowl champs...IN NEW YORK" :)

:yoy: .........REALLY? IMO The NFL is the best it's ever been, parity has brought excitement to the league, every year there's new contenders, and while it was close to sniffing a dynasty a couple times with the Broncos and Patriots, it never happened.

"Did their team plane land safely back in Foxborough?" Colgrave asked. "It didn't happen to lose altitude over Boston, burst into a cartwheel of flames, throwing players like Roman candles across New England, and then slam into few dozen loudmouth Patriots' fans houses? It didn't? Well, I guess no football season is perfect."
WTF?!
